I find once my okra gets taller than me, I cut it down to half its size so it can grow new shoots. I usually get a 2nd harvest easy. In fact, I just pruned one okra plant today. I did it last year to both okra plants I grew and I got 2nd harvests from both. Definitely saved a lot of time from trying to germinate new plants!

That cabinet is beyond gorgeous! What a very special gift! Looks to me like an instant family heirloom (they all start somewhere, this one starts with you). Well done, Peter!!! If Peter didn't include an engraved plate to establish provenance, I would have one made if I were you. Or at least engrave into the wood the date, maker name, and the fact that it was built for and gifted to you. Your great grandkids will cherish this piece, as long as your kids and grandkids do also. WOW.

I was getting teased by my hubby for ordering smallish orders of seeds every few months. I have 2 small raised beds but i feel some security in having a selection on hand. It makes planning and planting days easier and less expensive upfront as ive alrwady got the seeds. Plus i can bless friends. Im glad im not the only one. Your pep talks are so helpful! I'm in Greenville, SC in similar zone, a little cooler since we are near mountains, so I'm about a week or so behind you. Great ideas about fall garden, I always plan too late. One year I had rutabagas from the garden for Thanksgiving, I'd like to do that this year again. Also loved your encouragement last week about not giving up when garden is peaking. You gave me the encouragement to keep watering in mornings before work last week when it was so hot, which kept things going...and then we got a huge rain this week so everything is refreshed. Love this channel!

Jess, have you ever tried kalecado salad? My very favorite. 1 bunch kale, torn into bite size pieces Juice & zest of 1 lemon 1 whole avocado, cubed to make it easier Salt & pepper Put all into a bowl, squish & massage the avo and lemon juice into the kale until it all turns creamy and coats everything. It's raw kale but it's sooooo yummy and when I was new to kale and didn't like it raw, this helped convert me!

I've never planted brassica's from seed starts in the Fall before. Living in Texas, we have a pretty long growing season and I can just direct sow seed in September. This year I'm trying them from starts because we always get a really cold early winter after an intense hurricane season. I was worried about starts for my broccoli and collards, but I'm a bit more at ease since you are doing them, too. First freeze here is around Thanksgiving, so I will be harvesting my brassica's for Thanksgiving dinner. So excited!

I'm very fortunate. Here in zone 10a/b, in Southern Spain, we rarely get a frost but if we do, it's around the 1st to 15th December. So, I'm planting all the spring/summer crops for a second time and simultaneously starting seeds, in trays, for the autumn/winter crops too. Sadly, around this time of year, I lose the battle against powdery mildew. Hence the need to replant everything.

Thank you for the video. I do not see a change to plant a second wave... It is still very cold so my plants are not producing that much. It is about 20 degrees Celsius at max... I think we will do some lettuce later this year, in our house. Edit: Kale is here in the Netherlands a vegetable which you can find on many diner tabels in the winter. Indeed, they are the best when there has been frost over it. How we Dutchies normaly eat it (for 4 persons): Cut 1 kg of (a bit crumbly) potatoes in chunks. Put 600 grams of cut kale in a big pot and put the potatoes on top. Fill the pot with water so it just covers the potatoes. Bring this to a boil. And boil for about 10 minutes on medium heat. When it is cooked, drain the kale and potatoes. Mash the potatoes and kale together with a splash of milk (or cooking liquid) and a knob of unsalted butter (25g) and salt and peper to taste. For extra flavor: cook some bacon (spekblokjes) and mash together with the kale. Serve with some gravy and a Dutch sausage :) Or a big meatball.

I'm in Texas and we have about 98 days left before the first frost, but it hardly even get cold here maybe in the low 30's in Jan and Feb. Thanks to you I have already starting planning and have even started some seed inside for the fall garden. My husband loves gardening and growing food as for me I'm the girl who hates getting dirt and being outside; but here I am taking over his hobbie and doing it better...lol...who know I could get the hang of this. I have done hours of research for a good year before I actually got my hands dirty no pun intended. I wear gloves in the garden but do get into occasional mud fights with the garden. I started out small and worked my way up. This is year 2 of actually tending and growing food and I have learned so much by just planting seeds and watching what they do. Your channel has been a big help and encouragement! I'm more on the plan it out and organized side so I'm trying to work that out by keeping a gardening journal so each year will get more and more efficient. We have to use raised bed or buckets. I'm really loving the fabric grow bags thing are really grow well in those for us. We are always late in starting our garden, but I'm hoping that by having a fall garden it will help me to stay on track for a better doing garden.

Lauren Richardson. I am also in PNW & love Territorial Seed Co. My family has been planting & growing their seeds for almost 40 years. I'm in the Willamette Valley. So short drive to their warehouse. Their catalog is great & getting one reminds me of, the Sears Christmas catalog, from when I was a kid😁.

Ok, I am turning 57 this month and feel like my memory has had issues in the past few years, but how do you remember all of this? I've been playing with gardening for a few years.... but I cannot remember half the stuff you remember about starting, transplanting, harvesting and so many other things.... LOL you amaze me!!!!!

I am catching so much heat. I think I am addicted. I have given up half year back yard to my new Kitchen Garden. I am most excited about growing Kohlrabi. I have never had it and everyone keeps saying how good it is. Anyway, I love your channel. I am in Zone 8A Stonecrest GA. Have a blessed day.

You're frost tender plants could be grown in the high tunnel. The brussel sprouts, cabbage, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, if you grow all that, can go in regular garden. Oh my gosh Jess, your garden tours will continue into winter!!! HOORAY!!! My question is...when are you gonna have time to rest. Please remember to REST! GOD BLESS THE SOWARDS & THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO! 🌈❤🌻🌿

This year was my first attempt at a real garden. It has been a learning process.....one thing that I learned is that growing a garden in the heat of the Florida summer is not the best idea.(9a) Between the heat, humidity, and all of the BUGS.....it's been a battle that I mostly lost. The upside....I can plant again a bit later and maybe have better luck. I have 156 days until my first frost date....yep....the end of December is the expected first frost....but knowing SW Florida like I do....I won't expect any frost until sometime in January. I have so enjoyed watching your videos. Thanks for all of the encouragement for new gardeners. I will try again. I learn so much from you....thank you for that.

Out here in Arizona, I'm so so excited for the cooler fall weather. We're in the thick of the yearly heat wave and a lot of plants are struggling, but every time something dies off, it's creating a new opportunity to figure out what to plant there instead. (plus, who can really argue with fresh compost materials!) Nothing is a failure, there's just more opportunities.

I'm in Texas (Zone 8b), and I have a similar number of days until frost. I'm really looking forward to planting brassicas and greens and cucumbers this fall, none of which I planted this spring. Earlier in the year, I did a bunch of tomato experiments and that took up all my personal bandwidth. I was looking forward to getting some cantaloupes soon, but squash vine borers have invaded my whole patch. I've never had them go after melons before, but I guess they were hungry since I've given up on planting squash.

I am worried my spaces won’t open up when they need to go in, though! My tomatoes aren’t even blushing yet!

I am so excited for your fall garden. I have been contemplating on if, how and what I should plant in my container balcony garden for the fall/winter. I am 28w preg and baby boy will be here end of September....i don't want to bite off more than I can chew and go all out bc I know how exhausted and busy I will be with a new baby, not to mention how pregnant and uncomfortable I am feeling now, and don't want to go through the trouble of planting and starting everything to ultimately neglect it. I think I'll just keep it simple with easy crops bc i cannot not have my garden hands in some dirt even with a newborn.😊

I am gearing up for my growing season. I am in the desert southwest so summer for us is like winter for everyone else. So far the only thing that has survived the heat is one watermelon plant, a couple of San Marzano tomato plants, and some corn. The only things thriving are my okra and sweet potatoes. I have planted all my winter squashes and am waiting until August...that is when my planting season kicks off again 😁
