Thanks for watching! This video is purely based on my experience living in Auckland. I'm aware that other cities are less expensive, but I only lived in Auckland. I love New Zealand and recommend it to anyone who asks me where they should travel to. I did travel a bit around the North & South Island and found New Zealand to be one of the most beautiful countries I've ever been to - I'm so grateful that I got to spend a bit of time here.
Auckland AINT A GOOD PLACE TO STAY IF UR BROKE
You are talking about the busiest and the most expensive part of new zealand.Most back packers are more likely to do work like fruit picking in the more rural and cheaper parts of the country.

In my experience, the word friendly isn't correct, I would say that they are gentle and polite and respectful but not friendly
Wellington is better than Auckland for these reasons. There is a bus stop every 3 minutes, it's actually easier to NOT have a car in Wellington, walking is so much easier. The city is easy to walk around and so are the suburbs, I walked over 10 miles the other day and it took me an hour but it's so easy to find your way around this place once you know where you're going

But the bad thing about Wellington and The south in general is that it’s a lot more cold in the winter, cause normally it’s quite warm all the other 3 seasons. In Auckland is at winter time it’s about 15-8 celsius (not at night) and in Wellington it’s like 11-6 celsius (again not at night)

Auckland is the most expensive city in New Zealand. And this is not me being racist but it's also the most populated place in New Zealand due to all the immigrants living there.

Yeah Auckland is really expensive, they also have a housing crisis because the houses are just too expensive and the minimum wage can't sustain that. There are whole families living in cars

Also the cheapest food is actually junk food, you can get fizzy for $1 and water will be more expensive. So if you want to eat healthy it's more expensive😬 which just puts people in poverty at more of a disadvantage

I agree with everything you said!!! (I am a NZ'r living in Asia, lived in the US and Oz for a few years). I would add a couple of things; 1) NZ used to be cheaper than OZ prior to the financial crash (OZ arguably never had one), and try to avoid the South Island in winter (unless you are skiing!). Great job!
Awesome update!
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this. I live in Australia but have visited NZ numerous times. Excited for your trip to the South Island.

living and being born in New Zealand makes it so much easier and sometimes cheaper well thats what i have learnt. Also transportation is hard because of how busy it is just saying.

Ignore the expensive/cheap rationale. It's misleading. Focus on the *cost of living*, which *is* high in NZ. My cost of living in the US and, previously, in Japan was ~1/3 of what it is in NZ.
@hilarycolls9432

No it's not as I live here. More people are arriving yearly and our roading isn't being built quick enough to cope. Housing here is also expensive. Kiwi's wages are not high. If you work in fruit industry for a time then save to go to cheaper parts of country like Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, East coast of south Island all beautiful but cheaper. central Otago stunning just stay away from Queenstown unless your're very rich. we love our country but right now the dollar is low so this yeas tourists will get great deals. we pay more for imported goods and petrol
I appreciate your views on Auckland, me, being a born a bred Aucklander agree with your views and couldn't think of anywhere else in NZ, I would rather live, just for the convenience, with everything within a 30mins car ride away, includes beaches, bush walks and crowded shopping malls, public transport sucks, but took a train ride recently and it compared with anything in the world, relatively quick, but clean and modern.
It's so expensive because your living in Auckland. Auckland is literally the most expensive city in New Zealand if you move to the South Island everything is less expensive

Actually its only been like that the last 10 or so years. Food has tripled in cost since they got everyone to change from food farming to dairy.
@jarsky
6 жыл бұрын
but even dairy products are expensive, and we supply about 2.5% of the worlds milk, so we aren't short on it. We also have a huge number of sheep and cows, so meat shouldn't be as expensive as it is. Much of the vegetable produce is very expensive here in supermarkets as well. You can go to an asian vegetable shop for much much cheaper. a lot of the cost is because theres a large monopoly on the large chains. Most of the supermarkets are owned by a single corporation (Progressive Enterprises), and same with dairy with most farms supplying a single company (Fonterra).
@NzPhenomenon

Amanda Round the Globe that's not true.. We don't import everything. A lot of produce is made in NZ and that's one of the reasons for the high prices.

Food cheaper than Hawaii by a decent amount. Rent is too, even in Auckland.
South of Auckland (papatoetoe,orara,mangere,etc) is cheap to get your groceries compared to the city

Walk up Mt Maunganui (east coast) - awesome views on a clear day (also right on a surf beach). Raglan, another surf beach on west coast (black sand - darn hot sand middle of summer), Raglan beach town - lots of cafes and cool craft shops.
The avacados aren't normally $4 each, only this summer there was a shortage. Normally around $1.50 or $2 each. But yes food is probably quite expensive. NZ does not subsidise farmers like many other governments do because much of the produce is exported so that would be like subsidising overseas consumers to eat our food
Having a good job is really important in Europe as well. Nice to hear NewZealand is so relaxed. Would love to see more cultural comparison videos. US vs NZ, Aus vs NZ, etc.

A fairly large New Zealand city, which has a lot of the amenities of urban life but is a good deal cheaper -- and less congested -- than Auckland, is Christchurch. Nearby small towns include Lyttleton, Rangiora, Darfield, Lincoln, Leeston, Ashburton. Visiting New Zealand is rather different from immigrating there, which I did nearly 30 years ago.
Interesting video :) public transport in Wellington is awesome though - did you get to visit there?
Go about 3 hours north, find somewhere with a sign for avocados and you can get them for a dollar countdown is a rip off for produce.
Just read some comment and I'm impressed by rude comments from some Kiwis. You idiots, dont you understand that this is HER experience? If you disagree with her, you can tell your comments politely. Im considering migration to NZ and would like to thank her for sharing her experience.
You are absolutely right about cost in NZ. As we are only 4.1/2 million population/consumers & located at the bottom of the world we must shoulder huge shipping costs to get small amounts imported here. Hence the birth of Kiwi ingenuity (make anything out of anything you can get your hands on) And it has definitely taught us, less is more. Only a few decades ago there where no Low-cost cheap stores like KMart etc & prices were extreme. This is perhaps a reason why Kiwi's are such a well travelled people, to us when shopping oversea's the world is "On Sale" :)
Kiwi here. Like Sydney and Melbourne, housing is VERY dear in Auckland. Everywhere else in New Zealand, budget at least US$300K to buy a decent house in a safe neighbourhood. Not many Aussies move to New Zealand; the two countries do not have a unified old age pension. If you don't have children at home, the NZ income tax is stiff. There are lovely smaller towns in New Zealand: Hastings, Napier, Masterton, Feilding, Blenheim, Motoueka, Rangiora, Ashburton, Geraldine, Oamaru are all cases in point.
I'm currently traveling in Germany and there's a few things I noticed public transport is good with regards to trains and buses...food quality is outstanding...and food costs generally speaking are alot more cheaper than nz....I'm proud to be a kiwi but we sure pay a high price for living there!😂
@zeelowsguys
4 жыл бұрын
Also one other thing that disturbed me on the contrary to the points I already made is the availability, affordability and acceptability of cigarettes....maybe Europe needs to follow nzs lead with regards to this and push for smoke free regulations
Rent is high cause were having a housing crisis in Auckland right now I'm not sure if your in Auckland or not though
For the cost that’s just Auckland my dude
4.20.you're absolutely correct. When Yanks in U.S.A. asked me what I did, they were not impressed at all, here I'm thought of as a near hero !!!
What kind of car are you renting in the US for $80? I typically spend $30-40 from national rental companies (normal cars, not tiny cheap ones).
They sit around talking rugby union and singing "Slice of Heaven" all Day. The highlight of their day

no we don't do that
Auckland is known to be the most expensive city in NZ, otherwise we liked what we saw during a brief visit there.
All of NZ is very very expensive. We lived in Auckland then when we realised how painfully expensive it was we moved to Dunedin. Same again, painfully expensive. The houses were cheaper but everything else was dearer and the wages were even worse than Auckland. We are back in the UK now.
Vegetable markets/stores are easy ways to get cheap fruit and veges. You can easily get a kg of produce for a few dollars. Not sure how many there are in Auckland as I live in a city near Wellington
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe
6 жыл бұрын
aw should have tried that! Thanks for the tip!
One of the most expensive cities to live in are auckland. Just geting it out there.
I agree New Zealand is really expensive, I live in Auckland nz. When I went to America I got shoes for $50 and in nz they're like $150
Queenstown and Auckland are the most expensive places in NZ live.
Get out of Auckland you will enjoy nz better
great coffee is everywhere.....we're a coffee nation. you'll get the odd bad one but it's not common...
TLDW: (written by a Kiwi) Auckland is not representative of New Zealand as a whole. In fact most of us don't even like the place.
But your living in Auckland have you been to Wellington Christchurch or Dunedin ?
Wellington has great public transportation - I know you lived in Auckland but just putting it out there. Also yea a lot of your problems are that you lived in Auckland
Get to South Island, that's where to be. You might as well be in London or any other big city.
Check out New Plymouth,Taranaki
I was told that getting a permanent working visa is more difficult because you have to get a job that isn't held by a native NZ person or they're having a hard time finding the right person for it. I'm more interested in the permanent working visa over the working holiday visa....would you know anything about it?
Rent is not expensive everywhere in NZ. Only up north.
Move out of Auckland and come down north like Wellington its cheap and easy and its not as ruthless as Auckland
Everything is so much more expensive in Auckland than any other place in New Zealand especially living costs
Hi Amanda, thanks for the Vid :) Have you stayed in NZ during winter? I‘ve heard it must be supercold (also inside), 'cause barely anybody has central heating. Any experiences on that? 😅
@jellycheah

Yes. Sometimes it is colder inside than outside!
Come to Welly cuz! (next time your back)
I love newzland
Yes Auckland is so expensive The riches town in nz The best place to live is outside auckland
Lol...I live in auckland😂 And ye Auckland is actually pretty expensive compared to other nz places
The government really does need to invest in a decent nationwide public transport system. And fix ya damn roads lol
You'll love the South island..
Haha your problem is that you're living in Auckland! It's expensive there!
I wonder why it's so expensive to fly everywhere. Oh I no because we are an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and takes at least 3 hours to get any where
My god you needed to get out of Auckland!!!!
You can't really judge all of NZ from living in Auckland. Its like saying the prices of living in New York represents the cost of living for all of america. That's just not the case. Live in wellington its a bit better.
My dreaming country
This video mainly speaks about AUCKLAND. Not the rest of NZ! Plus even though you live in Auckland, there are places you can buy things for cheaper. PLEASE BE AWARE.
Sorry about the rude comments from my fellow countryman.. Most is a nice people as you may have found. Rent is super expensive in Auckland for sure but else where is pretty good. Public transport around city's is shit it really is but travelling from city to city is easy on the bus and pretty cheap. Avocados you hit that spot on! Stupidly expensive every where unless you know a few secret sellers and spots to get them
Come down south we walk
I live in Australia, and have travelled a lot,the coffee here is nowhere near as good as NZ, it's so hard to just walk into a place and get a decent coffee,you must have lived in an alternate Australia, seriously, the coffee here is very average.
public transport in wellington is meant to be one of the best in the world
I live in rotorua.
You should do an update 😉 if applicable
Auckland is very expensive as other places in New Zealand are less
You can rent a car for cheaper than $80 a day in the US now ;) Go Turo or Zipcar!
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe
6 жыл бұрын
Omg yes!!! I will look into that next time I’m traveling around the US!!
Aucklands Public Transport sucks not "New Zealands", Wellington's is Awesome though.
avocado $4 ,,, not where i shop,, i bought 4 today for $2 and the highest price i paid this year was 90 cents, try an Asian supermarket,, my local always has bulk fruit going cheap,, for tha last month apples have been under $1 a kg,,, butternut and cup, $1-$2
Other parts in the country as for rents is cheaper as the cost for other things its similar around the rest of the country. The killer is the cost of things such as anything and everything is taxed to the wages that we earn. I was in Auckland not long ago the public transportation is a mess.
We're not chilled about money we're just all broke boi's
Auckland isn't the best place for a holiday and i live in Auckland. I'll prefer going out of the major cities
I don't like car. In Brazil, rio I used all. my time Bicycle and public transport. But in New Zealand it's very dependent on cars and I don't like it. For this I came back to Brazil.
Music?
End advice, tourists go out of AKL as soon as you can. Go anywhere but, kiwis avoid it too. NZ is expensive compared to other places. But it can be expensive anywhere, it depends on a few important factors..for example when I stayed in Malibu I was surprised it was expensive, everyone told me "America is cheaper" but thats relative to where you go. In NZ expensive housing and low wage increases over time are what are driving issues in NZ..privatization of the 1980s introduced a different economy to the previous state-run one that actually worked pretty well. NZ has not always been this way..and we have free maternity care, better health care access than America. Prescription meds are cheap, children free up to I think 15. And we live in the most beautiful country in the world. I have 0 desire to move to the US or Aussie despite having the option to.
We export 95% of our food which means whatever is leftover can be expensive, depending on the season. There is a price differential between Auckland and everywhere else but I agree that NZ is generally expensive. I was out in New Plymouth last night and a bottle of beer (330ml) was $11NZD - that's USD7.75. That is craft beer though.
despite being unemployed and undergraduate,i would love to live in new zealand !! some body take me away .. hahaha # life sucks in my country
"expensive as" haha you already picked up the kiwi stress of putting 'as' on the end of something.
Auckland is quite different from the rest of the country. Perhaps look into Christchurch
Your living in Auckland.first mistake . Of course your experience is less than ideal.public transport there does suck.if you lived in Wellington your coffee experience would be much much better you would have no trouble getting around.the key to maintaining the budget food wise is to use the farmers markets.
I’m from NZ and I spend like $120 for 5 people sooo get outta Auckland, it’s very expensive 😂
i live in nz. this is a really good vid but ur number one problem is ur staying in AUCKLAND you should have came to wellington.1Auckland is way more expensive.2 Aucklands traffic is way worse the wellingtons.
Broken my heart 💔 hahaha🤣🤣🤣🤣
Appreciate your comments. NZ is not for everyone.
