No car is absolutely perfect, they all have their pros and cons. Here are what I believe are the biggest downsides and upsides to owning an Audi RS7! If you are thinking about buying an RS7, you definitely want to take all these factors into consideration. Clearly in this instance, the pros far outweighed the cons for me, leading to me to buy an Audi RS7

    Hi Eddie, perhaps this is infra-dig to mention and you're already all over it, but in regard to that oil starvation from sludge risk issue. I've found the PAO-ester based engine oils far less prone to that than premium synthetics that are not PAO-ester based. Taking the NOACK evaporation index parameter as a guide, the PAO-ester type oils record at the low end but not by that much. So what's the big deal? However when considered against "normal" consumption of engine oil over the change interval the PAO-ester oil is consumed at near ~1/5 the rate. In my Audi that "consumption" is a difference of 60-70ml's to 280-300ml over 7,000kms. Something think about with your enthusiast buddies. My main concern came from reducing GDI inlet port coking and avoiding sludge that prematurely kills the cam chain guides/tensioners (that's also a monster job and cost).

  • @G0ddEityawesome

    @G0ddEityawesome

    James David drove both. Completely different driving experience even with the same engine. The rs7 definitely is more sporty and feels more raw. I was not expecting the s8 to be so subtle in comparison but the upside is that the s8 is more comfortable and has more luxury. Again if you want something close to a sports car that is super quick in a straight line, rs7 is hands down better.

  • @Billaeon

    @Billaeon

    @@G0ddEityawesome I had a completely different experience. Drove an '17 S8 Plus and an '17 RS7 Performance back-to-back and disagree with the "sportiness" of the S8 Plus. That thing was a freaking beast. Once in Dynamic, the entire character of the car changed and was much more planted w/little-to-no body roll. Both cars were spec'd loaded with basically all options. Regarding straight-line performance: total toss-up between the two. With 600 ponies on tap, either one is a mid 11s car (stock) - there was no obvious difference between the two in straight line performance, even with the weight advantage of the RS7. Twisties goes to the RS7, but only just. The weight advantage of the RS7 is noticeable there. Considering the S8 is a limo-class car though, the fact that it is comparable to the RS7 in driving characteristics and performance is testament to how well the platform was developed.

    Well, all of the negatives Eddie lists [except one] are why I got the S8...the one I am stuck with, as he is too, is the 4.0T turbo issue. Sooooo...for $2000 I am getting a preventive maintenance fix since I am out of warranty and I have a stage 1 tune, and the thought of a $10K turbo fix is not in my budget [actually, the $2k fix isn't either 'cuz as my wife said: "Uh, the S8 is for rich people, not you, honey" [cue snarkey voice]. Glad I got the S8 though: a real sleeper. Catches everyone off guard.

    Vs the M6 the awd is superior, I'll be driving mine in the snow and Quattro gives a lot more confidence than the tail happy M5/M6. I personally think the interior and technology in the RS7 is superior to the cls63. Each has its pros and cons, I personally really like the rs7 after experiencing all three.

    My 2014 S4 brakes squeal whenever the temperatures drop near or below freezing. Annoying as hell. Oh, and the 4 seats are a deal breaker for me on the RS7; we’re a family of 5. Granted, my car is not our main family car, but occasionally, I like to drive my car when we’re going somewhere, or I’m on dad duty driving my kids and a few friends around. Unless I put someone in the trunk 😜, I wouldn’t be able to have more than 4 people in the car.

    You can get carbon ceramics on the RS7 Performance. Regular prestige get the steel wave rotors, and yeah, they can need replacing at 20-30k miles. Someone on audizine just sourced all the parts for $2200. Check out the thread. I'm working on doing the same, definitely not going to spend full retail price.
