A hikers diet would make all these “health and fitness influencers” online 💩 their pants 😂 but on trail it becomes more about survival lol. High calorie because you’re burning so many… you need high energy foods… and you need foods that pack well and can be cooked on a little stove and that won’t perish! You’re doing just fine ❤

Yum! Really dig your videos. Actually passed you on trail as you were coming out of Damascus. Crusty old geezer dressed all in blue. Did not speak. You looked to be grinding pretty hard up out of town and I was crawling out of a deep dark cave of bonk trying to finish a 24 mile day down into town. I was so tired I don't think I even stepped aside to give you the right of way so shame on me. Anyway, a belated Ola, Bon Jour, and Hello. Wishing you lots of good ju-ju as you saunter northward...

Unfortunately, there are times when you're forced to resupply at a Dollar General, which doesn't have the most nutritious food, especially after other thru hikers already shopped there.

@robertknowles2699 sometimes you don't have that option. Dollar General's success is based upon opening stores where easy access to grocery stores is not possible. We all would rather have a grocery store or a Walmart for resupply.

Once while hiking over a ridge we took the wrong turn and accidentally had to walk across the next ridge to get to water. Not a problem, we had light with us, but the eight hour hike turned into 12 hrs. When we arrived at the river and made some hot food (noodles) I got into my tent and ate 250 grams of mantecol before going to sleep. My body just craved the calories.

@BeerinBeautifulPlaces thanks! I still gotta get all my gear. I'm a very experienced tent camper. But I've never bought gear with weight and backpacking in mind. I'm gonna need all new everything. If I packed up with what I got now it would be 70 lbs haha. But I got a year and a half to collect the stuff. I did 5 miles in and 5 miles out that day in maryland and I was sore for 3 days. I am overweight so I am going to try to lose some weight and do some smaller trails before I get to spring 2026. As many day hikes as I can with a goal of 10 miles in and 10 miles out. Or a 20ish loop. And I want to get at least one 100 mile ish loop next year to test gear and get a better idea of how much this is gonna kick my ass. Hopefully more then just one. I've slept in the woods in vans and tents half my life and I think I have the will power. My physical shape will be the hardest hurtle I think. I'll be a 32 year old man in 2026. I'm 340 pounds. But I am like 7 feet tall. I mean I'd probably be 250 skinny. But that's another reason to do this. I plan to save everything I can next year so I should be able to take 8 months if I have to buy yea I wanna get into this. I was sitting on Annapolis rock in maryland and I decided. I'm going to do this. It's been a thought forever. But yea I'm gonna do it.

I'm also gonna go back and forth with myself forever over weather or not I can take a backpacking guitar. I think I have to. I don't think I can go without it. It's the only luxury item I need. I will be bare bones everything else. I found a brand in Oregon that makes one I'm looking at. It's 42 ounces and basically instructable. Won't have to worry about it getting wet. Nylon strings. I'm so torn on that but I think I'd miss it too much.

This is why people go missing. They have no idea how much you actually need to consume while hiking to stay alert and fuelled up. A normal day sat at home you can get away with 3 meals maybe less but while out physically fatiguing yourself you just constantly need to eat and drink. Day hikers that take a litre water bottle and an apple are doomed.

Calories, mostly. High calories = more energy. And we need it to not get squished or go bad, so things like fruit and veggies aren’t possible more than one day out of town. There are power bars and food made for exercise or even backpacking specially but those are expensive, especially when you’re out there for half a year
