Honestly, managing other people's unrealistic expectations and lack of direct clarity in their communication (often not even knowing what they themselves want) and presenting layered and complex patterns and hypotheticals as simple, "user-friendly" concepts is already my full-time job as an autistic person just living in society, so tbh I feel like I'm built for this. 😅

Having jumped into learn data analysis to change careers I have noticed something. Learning the tools is fine. Understanding the hypothesis or problem question makes sense. Maybe you've done it already, but I haven't really seen anyone make a portfolio project showing a problem, and how their dashboards solves it. I think it's hard when practicing with kaggle data to find a problem and solve it. When learning I practiced the usual orders customers shipping type queries, but they never really explain what they would do in the office with the results. Maybe those get emailed in a report? I don't really know. I finally get that they are practicing with 20 lines to teach us the basics, when in reality it might be 100,000 rows. Thank you for your videos, honest insight, and resume template. I really appreciate your work!!!

Speaking for myself, I got interested in data analysis because I was good at focusing on neglected details like observing ingredients or calories on food products. Fortunately, I had experience using Excel in college which helped me take my data analysis journey to the next level with pivot tables, querying data, data visualization, and so on. I suggest that you create a video on why you chose data analysis as a career.

I’ve been thinking about becoming a data analyst but I have a few concerns about what kind of data analyst and if it’s right for me. My main concerns are having enough time to pursue my hobbies. Which I don’t expect to goof around so much once I’m in the workforce, but I want to carry my hobbies into adulthood. I am also concerned that my ADHD could impact my performance, but I think training and getting experience with activities related to data analysis could solve that question. My main reasons for being interested in this job is because I think it would suit me well, and the paycheck can hopefully fund my interests and hobbies as well as every day life. It also seems to allow flexibility in lifestyle since you can work remotely. Does anyone have advice on how to find what kind of data analyst would be best?

Only thing I disagree with is anyone can be a data analyst. I’m a project coordinator dealing with similar situations on a smaller scale and it’s definitely not for everyone. A lot of people would have a mental breakdown when you have so many demands flying at you. Glad they pay these people well they deserve it!

Sorry I’m a bit confused about the work-life balance aspect. At one point you said when the day is basically over more work can come in unexpectedly. On the other hand you said you prefer this career path because if you make plans to go out with friends for dinner you can count on being able to make the dinner.. so which one applies more now? Do you only have to stay in longer and cancel evening plans rarley? Sorry but this aspect is important to me, so I’d like to know more detail about this matter!

Even within my team, I have seen some team members use python for almost everything whereas others barely use it. I can confirm that we get asked for reports last minute and even before the information is available. So a partner wants the report about this months project spending and it's still the current month, LOL. So yeah he asked "early" but the info won't be available for days and then it's crunch time. And yes, they also call you at 5 PM and say they to price a project by the end of day so they can present it at dinner with the client... 🤣

Your description of being a data analyst and dealing with unrealistic expectations is a lot like being the only researcher on a team of colleagues who possess limited quantitative skills. They frequently have no idea how much work it takes to produce a "simple graph" (or map). They just think you push three buttons and viola! Data analyzed. They don't understand the data collection process (e.g., running surveys using an actual random sampling procedure, or even just finding administrative data sets), limitations of the data, processing/cleaning the data and so on. Especially if you are doing something new. Thanks for the opportunity to commiserate.

Good question! This is something I still struggle with but I've learned that having a system for ad hoc work to be submitted and prioritized really eliminates the last minute asks because it is understood by everyone including the stakeholders that the work has to be prioritized through a proper sprint and not just done last minute.
