What Hybrids Should You Carry?

Golf hybrids have been one of the great success stories of golf club designers over the last number of years.
But while the invention of the hybrid iron has eased the pain of long iron shots the fact that they now provide options for every iron the inevitable question which follows for golfers is - what hybrids should I have in my golf bag? The stock reply to this question is that it depends on an individual player's personal preferences and their knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses.
All of which is true but not particularly helpful.
So in this video we take you through some practical guidelines, including the ’24/38 rule’, to help you answer the question about how many hybrids you need, explain why you should have at least one hybrid in your bag no matter your standard, and also discuss what hybrids the top PGA and LPGA pros are using.

I am a 13.8 hcp. I had a stealth 2 hd 4H. I struggled with consistency with the 5i and 6i. I just got the Ping G430 5h and 6h also the Ping G425 3h. I tried them today and they were so easy to hit and the ball flight was so amazing. I can’t believe I didn’t get them sooner. This makes the game so much more fun. Why make it more difficult. I have no ego and will now always use the 3h, 4h, 5h, and 6h. I can’t say anything about older hybrids but these new ones are amazing expensive but amazing.

I have come to love my hybrids. I recently switched out my 6 iron (a Mizuno 221 blade) for a 6 hybrid. There was no avoiding the tremendous height and descent angle of the hybrid. Same distance, but much more likely to hold a green. I also love the adjustability which allows me to adjust gapping between clubs. I seem to change lofts on a fairly regular basis depending on how I am hitting my longer irons and the various hybrids.

I love my hybrids. I carry 2 and sometimes 3 no 5 wood. But as a club fitter/builder I cringed at the quote of the 24/38 rule by a modern day PGA teaching pro. (That title always makes me think about a line from a Woody Allen movie - "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach phys ed"). That dinosaur came about when blades roamed the earth. That was a 3 iron back in the day and spawned witty sayings such as "only God can hit a 1 iron". Too many 5 irons are those specs today. Does it still hold true? Only for a blade or a shallow cavity back. All the rest have overly engineered heads that have positioned the weight low and away from the face with faces that flex every which way imaginable. Introducing a new set of problems that have replaced the 24/38 rule with low face or toe strikes. And folks wonder why that can't make center face contact.

Would be great to get your feedback on what you think is a better rule for modern clubs. Key thing we are trying to get across with all our videos and certainly with this one is to get people thinking about hybrids and we would certainly argue that everyone should have at least one as we talk about in the video. The various items in the video are just starting points for people's testing and as much as people can afford to would always recommend going to a club fitter where they can. 👍

@@GolfingFocus I think I have an intelligent answer for you now. If it isn't intelligent...it is certainly a considered answer. 😉 I think possibly that one should consider spin rate by loft. Back in the day of real traditional lofts, the expectation was that you could look for each iron spinning in the neighborhood of 1000 rpms times the number of the iron. 5 iron - 5000 rpms. The loft on the 5 iron in the 1960s-1970s was 32*. That is many 7 irons today. So, a modern/current 7 iron spinning around 5000 rpms would be acceptable. A 28* 6 iron spinning at 4000 rpms. A 24 ish degree 5 iron at 3000rpms and so on. If you get higher spin-rates in the 6/5/4/3 irons, so much the better. At some point you will run out of loft and won't spin the ball enough for the club to be viable. This could be tweaked by length of shaft and/or lie angle...but currently I'm thinking spin rate might be the benchmark. Love your videos! Keep them coming! Your accent just drips golf. All the best!

@@pdmv8471Apologies it has taken me so long to come back to you on this. Your reply got lost in my inbox and so I missed it. I am certain you are right that spin rate by loft is a benchmark that golfers could certainly consider and may lead them to the best results. Only caveat I have is that the 'average' golfer tends to think (in my view at least) in much simpler terms and would struggle a bit using that as the benchmark to get to their choice of hybrids. I may be wrong of course! Huge thanks also for the feedback and following the channel. It is very much appreciated! 👍👍

I think too many golfers use clubs the pros use. Most average golfers can benefit from hybrids. I use 6,5 and 4 hybrids and love them.

Totally agree and if I’m honest I probably pay too much attention to what the top PGA and Liv tour pros are using if I’m honest. Think much more to be learned from Champions and especially LPGA Tour pros who play more hybrids up the bag.

@@GolfingFocus that is a really good point. Never thought of that but it makes a lot of sense.

Ideally I want to carry just one hybrid, a 5 hybrid, then go right into a 7 wood.

I agree, I carry a 5H as well as a g425 5W and a 7W. Longest iron in the bag is a 6iron, down to a 57 deg. sW. At my age 75+, I dropped the driver and eventually also the 3W. My g425 5w adjusted one degree flatter give me 180 +/- carry and in the fairway. I have nothing against laying up on the par 4s.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳

0 hybrids. I have 6 woods in the bag including driver. Fairway woods are so much easier to hit.

Interesting. 👍What’s the highest wood you are playing in that case? And what is the key advantage you think they give you even over the wide bodied hybrids?

@GolfingFocus 1st, i am a high swing player. My woods are driver 6*-300+yds 3wd 13.5*-275yds 5wd 18.5*-250 yds 7wd 22.5*-230 yds 9wd 27*-215yds 13wd 31* 200 yds I have tried hybrids in the past and I am not consistent with them st all. I am better with low irons than any hybrid. But fairway woods are just so much fun and so easy to hit.
