What homo naledi teaches us about being human | Juliet Brophy | TEDxLSU

In 2015, Juliet Brophy and her fellow researchers named a new species in the genus Homo. This discovery disrupted all of the preconceived ideas of the human evolutionary pattern and forced scientists to re-ask the questions, “Who are we?” and “Where did we come from?” In this inquisitive talk, learn about the discovery of Homo naledi and why it has scientists’ wheels turning. LSU Geography and Anthropology Assistant Professor Juliet Brophy peers back in time for new insights into the origins of humanity. A paleoanthropologist who specializes in the study of teeth, Juliet has been involved in excavations at several fossil localities in South Africa since 2003 and previously served as the Director of Bovid Studies at the Evolutionary Studies Institute (www.wits.ac.za/esi/) at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. She played a lead role in a 2015 effort at the Dinaledi Chamber of the Rising Star Cave (ewn.co.za/Features/Naledi/Risi...) near Johannesburg, South Africa, that turned up homo naledi, a human-like species that lived alongside the first modern humans. Her work included the “tooth booth,” an international collaboration of scientists who studied teeth that are tens of thousands of years old. Currently, Juliet is working on developing an open-access database that examines similarities between the teeth of early human species to other hominins, comparisons she believes can answer some of the most pressing questions about the fascinating evolution of the human animal on our planet. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I read archaeology and paleo anthropology as an interest (history related) for years. Fascinating. But there is one thing, one axiom I learned: never claim the latest discovery is IT. There always is diverging new the earth coughs up to have us continue the research into our true origins. Absolutely fantastic!

WOW!! Not a Young Earth Creationist in sight... well aware that simply raising the topic could doom this comment section to endless and pointless religious insanity... that said, GOOD Ted Talk: this lady speaks about important matters with great enthusiasm and the knowledge of a well-informed insider. Thank goodness for Ted, for bringing us SOOOO much enlightenment!!!

Earle Frost cool, an edgy atheist that fancies themselves to be an authoritative voice in the scientific field but probably barely graduate high school and drove by a community college a few times. No mainstream Christian thinks that the earth is 6000 years old. This misconception was never a view held by the majority of Christians at any point in history. Science is not an enemy of the church. Step away from the zeitgeist videos and learn to exercise logical and rational thought.

@@ThomCoe Christians stance on evolution and the history of the earth is a joke. They keep backpedaling with their answers as science continues to provide more validation.

Considering the the Creation myth in the Bible is just a rehash of other earlier myths. The truth is that we are descendants of very old species not created by sky voices.

Ty so much for sharing you knowledge, paleoanthropology makes my intellectual curiosity soar, after spending decades being indoctrinated into creationism/intelligent design (DI). You are giving me and humanity my/our true history. And! Most importantly our common ancestry. The fact of our common ancestry discredits racism and gives humanity us proof of our one human family.

Are there any theories about how the food required evolved for creatures to live on evolving simultaneously and how the stomachs evolved ? Which came first and over what time frame ? Did the plant DNA consult the mammal's and birds in order to ensure survival and how did they community Anyone?
