In this situation you can't remove the stopper, it's tied in to the p trap with a threaded plastic cap. Most faucet kits are like that now. And filling the sink with water helps the plunger do it's thing

I'm no plumber, but every plumber I know or have met advises against using chemical drain cleaner. Apparently, it does very little to remove clogs and can corrode or damage your pipes. I've also been told that it heats up as it reacts with the water/gunk and turns into a cement like substance, which will only make fixing the problem that much more difficult.

That was my method, but I learned that the plunger is a band aid fix. You need to turn that stopper counterclockwise, pull up and remove it. Then, thoroughly clean it with a toothbrush, then use a little scraper or better, let it soak for a few minutes in some type of lime remover, like Lime Away to remove any lime deposits. Also, pull out the guck still inside the drain and clean inside the drain with a toothbrush too. Otherwise, you will forever be using a plunger and it will get worse and worse.
