This is so useful. I have tried plugging in a microphone using a XLR to 1/4" cable into the line input of an audio mixer and I must say that the result are the same, the sound is very noisy and the gain is terrible. I think it is because the microphones are producing less electric signal than the line audio. So in order to amplify that microphone sound, the audio interface manufacturer had to design a circuit that allows the microphone to be correctly amplified by making a separate control between microphone input and line input.

I seem to remember as a teenager with my tape four track plugging a sm58 into an impedance adapter transformer that was a inline xlr to 1/4 inch. Worked pretty good if I recall. But it changed the impedance from low to high so that it would work. You should test one of those maybe from Hosa and see if it improves the sound dramatically.

Can you do a video on balanced vs unbalanced connections? Pros and cons etc.

  • @robjthmpsn

    @robjthmpsn

    3 жыл бұрын

Simplistic answer since this question has a lot of thumbs up. A balanced cable has an extra wire inside that picks up the noise only and is out of phase. When added to the regular wire which has your audio and the noise and is in phase, the out of phase noise added to the in phase noise cancels each other out and literally disappears, leaving only your noise free audio. Both devices on each end of the cable must be balanced gear. Most instruments aren't balanced, so balancing usually occurs between the interface and your monitors or the mixer and the interface.

I found that if you connect a dynamic microphone to a pre amp like a dbx 286s and then connect the pre amp to the instrument input of your audio interface, you don't get that noise level at all. I guess it's due to the pre amp gain. To be honest I have used this setup for months before using it the right way but I barely ear any difference. Great video as always !

  • @xHadesStamps

Although everything in this video is spot on, I'd like to add that you actually CAN use a line input (of an interface with good, low-noise preamps) for very loud sources like kick drum, snare drum, bass amp etc. and dynamic mics that aren't too low in output. Since you mentioned small band settings where you're just short if a few mic inputs on the desk - as long as you designate those line inputs to drums' close mics (especially if you'll use noise gates, e.g. on kick or toms) you might actually get along pretty well. For live applications this is even more an option.

Could you plug a Rode Videomic with 3.5mm to 1/4” adaptor into the line level input of the Solo? The videomic has a stated max output of +6.9dBu. That would be handy as a dual mic setup in a pinch if possible.

  • @JulianKrause

Hey, this would only work with a VideoMic Pro because it has a battery. The VideoMic needs plugin power to operate and the line level input does not provide that. Still, with the VideoMic Pro there is probably going to be a lot of noise.

I use channel one, audio recording, dynamic mic, and although i do record voice, i do not see a noticeable wave amplitude on the track display. My understanding is that it is better to have a noticeable wave signal. What is happening? I am turning the gain on channel one appropriately. Thanks for your review, Jorge

Great video Julian. But one question. How would this translate to a cheap lav mic or shotgun mic which are specifically made for use with pc soundcards? I have here a lav mic which can operate passive and with battery power. The cheap one from boya. Would it provide a good noise floor or still suck? Would the direct monitoring work with it? I ask because I wanted to get an audio interface but use it without XLR microphones in the beginning - what is your opinion?

Extremely helpful...thanks, Julian. I am using the 2nd gen version of the Focusrite Scarlett Solo and had been fighting with trying to get my mic to record audio tracks panning left & right (in Cakewalk), and with no success I might add. And though I DO have a mic cable that uses a 1/4 inch male with an xlr female mic connector, this video made it clear that I would have a lot of difficulties trying to use a mic in the instrument/line input. BUT!...I really need the capability to record left & right (panned) audio tracks. Can you - or anyone else following this video - tell me the best (not to mention affordable) USB device that would allow me to do so?

I have to have one Mic connected using a balanced XLR to jack adapter. I don't seem to get nearly as much hiss as you experienced. Could it just be I'm getting lucky that the jack inputs on my interface, although line level, are also balanced and I'm using a balanced adapter which helps cancel noise?

*With a reasonably sensitive dynamic in front of a relatively loud guitar speaker, the preamp noise will probably be masked by the source. Pointed at a snare or similar loud source, the S/N can be somewhere close to tape. Never probably acceptable for naked speech, but often usable (better than nothing!) in a full mix scenario.

My own question is how is it possible for some Interfaces to have the same input for insrtrument and Line-in without any switch to choose between the two. Instrument output should have much-much higher impedance than Line output. There should be an impedance mis-match somewhere. Maybe an idea for a future video like this one. And maybe an aspect of Audio Interface performance to measure in reviews, for those that don't offer the relevant switch.

Soooooo imagine I have a guitar with active pickups. These basically function as a pre-amp built into the guitar, and you use the volume knob on the guitar to regulate the gain they output. If you connect those to the standard input at the front of the interface, you usually have to turn the gain knobs way down on both the guitar and the interface to avoid clipping, simply because the output of the active pick ups is so much stronger than that of a guitar with passive pick ups. And since you said that the line-in inputs (typically on the back of the audio interface devices) are made to receive signals that are a lot stronger than that of a mic, I reckon they would work with the stronger signals from those active guitar pick ups. What do you think? Has anyone tried this?

I want to have the possibility to record stereo now and then. Otherwise I'm fine with just one mic input. If I was to connect my stereo mics to a small mic preamp and output a linelevel signal via TRS to one TRS/XLR combo input and one TRS instrument/line input, do you think this would be fine? Or are there differences in the interface preamps that would make this not usable?

That sounds like an over complicated setup and you might end up slightly different sound on the left and right. I would recommend to buy an interface with two mic inputs which allows you to simply connect two mics to record in stereo.

You could've also tried using it with a fethead, that way the signals could've been boosted without noise.

Hey, that doesn't work because the line / inst Input does not provide phantom power for the FetHead to operate.

Hey Julian, when you used the DBX 286s, were your recordings in reverse polarity? I acquired a 286s and my recordings are now in reverse polarity compared to my Motu M2, which records with proper polarity. I thought it might be the cable I was using, so I bought another, but this didn't fix the issue.

Hm, that's weird. I haven't noticed a reversal of polarity with the 286s but I haven't checked for it. If the 286s flips the polarity you could build your own cable with crossed-over wires to correct it.

@@JulianKrause Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, that's the plan now. I wish it wasn't the case, but it gives me a reason to learn how to solder.

Hi, (1) Is it okay to connect the output from a 50-watt guitar amplifier headphone port to a line-in input port on a mixer? (2) Also, is it okay to connect the output from a 50-watt guitar amplifier headphone port to a line-in input port on a PC sound card? When I did (2) the PC sound card quite literally got fried up. But for (1), the mixer didn't get burnt up and everything functioned normally. What's the difference actually between the two scenarios? Afterall both had the same signal from the headphones output port going into a line-level input port.

Many thanks. I really wanted to know what is line input. Now i know. Except, i use a camcorder which has a 3 inputs: Line , mic , mic+48v. I wanted to know what Line input for? Can i use it for audio mixer? And what if i connect mixer to regular mic input? Which i usually do, and get fine resuly.
