What Happens When A Battery Cable Fails

Welcome to Buckley's Auto Care. www.buckleysaut... 302-999-8285 For Quick Service On Your Battery Cables
Today we learn that a vehicle that won't start isn't necessarily the fault of the battery or fuel pump or even ignition for that matter. One thing that is overlooked a lot is the condition of the battery cables. You know, the ones that attach to the battery directly.
The (+)positive (red colored) goes from the battery positive terminal to a series of connections - alternator, relay box, engine fuse box. The ground (-) side (black) will typically go to an area on the frame and the engine block in order to complete the voltage path.
In this clip I show how corrosion on the ground cable can affect the ability of a vehicle to start normally. These cables should be inspected at least once a year during normal routine maintenance. In higher moisture climates maybe even every six month. The goal is to spot any corrosion or deterioration in the cable or connections.

Thanks for sharing I bought a Nissan Maxima with 86000 miles on it , my battery cables look similar and my alternator charging system works intermittently. I'm going to replace the negative battery cable and post clamp tonight

Your video makes sense... Would that cause you to get a small shock when touching the truck from the inside after a no start?

I was getting codes that led to a ecm replacement. I replaced it. Still the same issue. I'm gonna test the voltage tomorrow

I have a pesky crank, no start condition right now. I learned how to do voltage drop testing on the fly yesterday, and tested a couple of points in my fuel pump circuit (Junction & fuse boxes). I traced the problem back to the battery/fuse box connection. There was crazy high resistance on the power side, and resistance slightly greater than battery positive voltage on the ground side. Does that mean that both my battery cables are shot?

My Chevy S10 truck won't turn over 4-out of 19 times. I get a lil shock when I leave the cab and have cleaned the terminals.

I’m having issues with my 2007 suburban 5.3 I’ve done everything to it even got engine rebuild and still have a misfire and tiny lifter noise. But when I disconnect battery and connect back the truck runs good you think might be neg cable?
