Important to note that GBA carts run at 3.3V whereas GB/GBC carts run at 5V. Doing this could damage the cartridge, but it's a rare occurrence.

Aren't Game Boy Color cartridges unplayable on Game Boy Classic and Game Boy Pocket? I thought the cartridge and label should have indicated that. I know Game Boy Classic games can also be played on Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color game can also be played on Game Boy Advance, because the later Game Boy machines play any cartridge that the earlier Game Boy machines can play.

@@bennel3588 Gameboy Color is like an extended version of the original. There are games that work on both (meaning you they're colorized on GBC but still play on the older models) and there are GBC exclusive titles. The GBC exclusive ones still had to have an error screen if you put them in a GB Pocket for example. GBA games are completely different however, which is why the guy making the video had to put the circuit board in a different shell to plug it in at all.

@@bennel3588 Gameboy color games come in 2 types: Hybrid (black cartridge) and GBC only (clear, usually). The black ones will play fine in an original gameboy but will have color features that only work on the GBC

@@Zenoff64 I wonder if Pokemon Yellow, Gold, and Silver Version count as Game Boy Color games. Yellow Version is yellow, Gold Version is sparkly gold, Silver Version is sparkly silver, and Crystal Version is sparkly blue. The pokemon games matched what color was mentioned. From what I see, it was stopped for Nintendo DS and after that.

​@@FreezyOHThe 3DS is newer than the DS and has backwards compatibility, the Game Boy is older than the Game Boy Advance and therefore cannot have backwards compatibility, the Game Boy Advance on the other hand has backwards compatibility for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

Both are correct also if the code and Tom header would work the game would crash imiditly beacose of memory corruption cause beacose gbc/gb has less memory than GBA

the pins are compatible, however the gb/gbc and gba use different voltages in the cart slot and the gba has a switch that the original gameboy carts hit that changes the voltage and allows the gb/gbc carts to play on the gba

For reference, that "black spot" is a cheap alternative to an actual IC package like a DIP or QFP. I don't know if I've ever seen it used outside of trash electronics. I'd guess in the case of bootleg carts, the actual packages you see are cheap off-the-shelf components, with the epoxy blobs being custom logic, cutting down on the cost of getting custom packaged ICs made.

I wonder if my Pokemon LeafGreen Version game had that, because I did have a pirated version, and there was no wonder it was acting funky on me. There were some changes, like the drink to give to the guards, and the legendary beasts using the same theme as legendary birds, and it made me think the beasts were the same as the birds, and when some genius that had the true version knew it was fan-made, it made sense, and after realizing the theme was supposed to be different, I started to know they were different.

also the "gameboy advance" lettering font is thin.

I've tried this, you can't even fit the gba cartridge over the pin connecters if you take the back shell off

I actually did this as a kid with my brother. It was my birthday and I got Pokemon Ruby. We didn't know this was for a whole other system so we desperately tried to get it to work before my mom came in and said "we made a mistake, we gonna go buy you the new gameboy for it so you can play." Bless that woman. She is not dead but my god bless that woman.

I put Crystal in a Gameboy Pocket and it said in Unown "Please Play this game on a Gameboy Color."

This not only doesn't work, but both consoles use different voltages. The Gameboy runs entirely off 5v logic, while the GBA uses 3.3v logic. The GBA system however is dual voltage, as it switches between 3.3v and 5v depending on what cartridge is plugged in. It's part of the GB/GBC backwards compatibility feature, which is controlled by a physical switch in the cartridge slot.

If it was a DVD PS2 game, that makes sense, since it literally couldn't read it, but some early PS2 games were pressed on CDs, so you'd think they would have included some fun code saying to play it on a PS2.

Since the GBA is more “advanced” and passed the regular Gameboy’s peak, that there alone would tell us that the GB won’t recognize GBA games at all.

Now that’s what I call Forwards Compatibility!

Well of course it didn't work, the architecture is completely different (different CPU, different video hardware, different memory and so on). Amd plus the carts for GBA use 3.3v while the Gameboy uses 5v, its a wonder how you didn't fry everything.

GB carts work at 5 V, GBA carts at 3.3 V, so of course a GBA cart doesn't work in a GB, it's not even able to display an error message. GBAs have a mechanical switch to select the correct voltage based on the game's case form, btw.

@@madmax2069 Since execution starts at 0x100 for the GB and 0 for the GBA, it would be possible to jump to a SM83 routine that does something (like displaying an error message) if you provided the Nintendo logo data in the right memory locations so the Gameboy would actually try to boot your game.

Logic

You probably shouldn't do this if you value your cartridges. Game Boy games run on 5v, but Game Boy Advance games run on 3.3v. Putting the GBA game into a Pocket is a good way to kill the cart.

Nintendo actually thought of this when designing GBC carts! Most of them will just give you an error message saying the game will only wprk on a GBC console.

I mean, if I recall correctly the original GameBoy and the GBA run completely different CPU architectures even.

I’m glad that you didn’t circumcised the GBA game like you did to the 3DS game.

The GB has a validation inside the console that the initial gameboy screen logo needs to be exactly the same as the one included when boot a rom up, otherwise it will not boot the game and it will show this black rectangle instead of the logo, since the gba games don't have them even if it somehow tried to load the game it would not go after this validation.

Extra information on that. It came from the fact that nintendo couldn't ask for copyrights of the game since it has no info from nintendo inside, but if the nintendo logo was inside of the cartridge it means nintendo approved and if it wasn't (a fake game for example) nintendo could sue asking for copyright usage

The reason why this happens is because of the anti piracy The Nintendo logo that you see on boot is stored at a specific address on the ROM Your game boy checks for the Nintendo logo, displays it, then checks it against one stored on console. If they match, the game loads

You mean Game Boy Advance cartridge. This video had nothing to do with Game Boy Color cartridges. But on that topic, you _can_ play some Game Boy Color games on the OG Game Boy (but obviously they'll lose the colors). For example, Link's Awakening DX (black case) can be played on an OG Game Boy _or_ a Game Boy Color. However the Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons games (clear case with bulge on top) can only be played on Game Boy Color.

This is almost as shocking as when i tried to see if my n64 game worked on a ps1
