What happened to Wilson Golf?

Спорт

This video discusses how Wilson Golf lost its status as a top equipment manufacturer. I start off by going through the company's corporate history, including the series of mergers it had to go through.
I then go through a selection of crucial strategic mistakes that they made, including the lack of distinct branding of its premium products, its association with low-quality products through its partnership with Walmart, and the insufficient marketing efforts on the social media front.
I finish off by touching upon how the brand is perceived today, explain the fairly recent acquisition by Anta Sports (who also owns FILA), and pose the question of whether or not the company will be able to bounce back to its past peaks.

Intro:
Wilson Golf was at the top of the game in the 80s- they had the #1 Golf ball, #1 Irons, and endorsements from the most recognized golfers on the planet.
Today, they live as a shadow of their former selves, having fallen into obscurity as a golf manufacturer, with everyone left scratching their head at why companies like Taylormade, Callaway, and Ping now tower over them.
This video will explore how a golf dynasty lost its crown.

The current Wilson Staff irons are extremely underrated. Both the forged & game improvement irons are high quality & as good as the other “top” club manufacturers. Their fairway woods & drivers are getting better, but still need work.

It's amazing how when a logo gets associated with cheap/poor quality, the marketing doesn't think about changing the logo for their premium offerings. The Walmart association kills the consumer's perception of them.

This video is spot-on. When I started in golf, Wilson Staff was a high-end brand. But, like McGregor, it lost its luster. I used to play Staff balls, especially the Titanium Balata. But as they moved away from such high-quality equipment, I turned away. Now, Wilson is making some very intriguing balls and clubs, but I'll never consider them. Again, for the exact reasons described here. That's sad, because I know better, but that's the way it is.

Unfortunately for Wilson, you are not alone in that opinion. And your last few sentences are totally understandable, as Wilson has consistently "disappointed" people with mediocre and uninspired products. The only way I imagine them capturing people back is by consistently bringing out exceptional clubs for the next decade or so (and marketing them properly), which may inspire enough curiosity for us to actually buy them.

@@lmfgolf Maybe. But it didn't work for MacGregor or Hogan, both brands who went through such an attempted revival. I cannot think of a brand that went away and then regained its former glory. They get tainted with being from a bygone era and, as we know, golf technology is always on the march. They might not even survive as a niche product.

@@richdouglas2311 Fair points Rich. Currently reading into MacGregor's history and it is eerily similar. Perhaps a total rebrand is in order - dropping the Wilson name and starting with a fresh face entirely. They would still retain the manufacturing capacity and industry connections. I'm thinking of what SEAT did with Cupra in the Automotive space. That would require considerable investment, one I think Wilson could, but probably won't make. Wilson Golf (I assume) is profitable at this time, so the pencil-pushers of the company probably won't take the risk.

I have a set of Wilson woods, as in actual persimmon wood woods: driver, 3-wood, and 5-wood. Really nice looking set, with the finish getting progressively lighter from drive thru 5-wood: dark brown for the driver, medium for the 3-wood, and a blonde finish for the 5-wood. Got them at the time when the switch to metal woods had completely taken over. In fact, they were the last persimmon wood clubs in the store, and I bought them knowing I'd probably never really use them. Played with the 3-wood a few times, and the 5-wood was actually a nice little rescue type club. Also found a Wilson 50-degree gap wedge a few years ago on sale for $39.99 (at a golf store, not a big-box discount retailer). Bought it, and it has proved to be a fantastic little club. Can hit it off almost any surface. Seems utterly indestructible. The story of why Wilson fell from grace is typical of so many companies that fell victim to financial engineering and acquisition by sports conglomerates.

They're definitely on the upswing. When Harrington and Woodland were winning their majors I thought that they had way less brand presence than they do right now. I still use my dad's 1959 Wilson Staff Top-Flite irons and woods. These are the clubs Arnold Palmer used in the late 1950s. I love them. Small heads and blades. You have to understand the physics of your golf swing to hit every ball perfectly. I don't need to hit 300-yard drives for my ego. My goal is to keep the ball in the fairway and out of the sand and water. I have tried to develop a very simple, repeatable swing by engineering my swing from the point of contact to the point of address as opposed to the opposite. I can't repeat as often as Ben Hogan and Moe Norman but I understand what I did wrong when my ball is not in the middle of the fairway. If I hit as many practice balls as Ben Hogan perhaps I would have been able to train my muscle memory to be more consistent. But, even at my age of 72, I keep trying.

They should offer well-known tour pros a stake in the company and develop named clubs like they did with Arnie. However, the opportunity may have passed when Rory and Tiger had to replace Nike clubs. With irons now selling for $1400US for 7 clubs, people are being forced to used market. Get the price point right. The technology is largely marketing.

  • @tonysmario817

that's an excellent perspective...and should also be pursued, since the price point is simply the new normal, and all brainwashed 'normies' who can afford it continue to purchase $500 drivers, even though that novelty tech does nothing new for their game that their current driver doesn't do. the difficulty with that angle is the price it would cost wilson to get into the game...i'm sure they are as upside down financially as a manufacturer can be. but i agree, that is the sort of effort that must be undertaken to reestablish the brand... which is why i believe that a social media concept is the credible opportunity that opens the door to every other...become a LEADER at something in golf, and the rest will follow organically. ideally, if i'm wilson, i do both things simultaneously...i find the pro to back, and use them to help establish my social media concept. the truth is that such large corporate entities don't really care about doing anything ground breaking or substantial...they are cut-outs run by accountants that seek to capitalize on every penny spent in a direct way...build shit equipment to stuff into low price stores because they have the (previous) reputation of being a 'sporting goods' manufacturer. only when someone like callaway buys their brand will you see something clever come out of them. @@jamesgerboc

I agree. They may not even need to get a pro golfer on a major tour - especially if they aren't able to outspend titans like Taylormade, Titleist or Callaway. If they do, great, but I think going the route of sponsoring guys like Ben Kruper is a good start.

In my opinion Wilson will never return. Way to many bad business decisions were made for way to many years. When I think of Wilson I think of K-Mart. The way they chased fast money and also the way they cut out the pro shops they deserve to get crushed by the bigger OEM’s in my opinion. Go hit one of the dyna-power irons it feels like a pot metal club from a box set….JUNK

exactly right. but recall that taylor made produced the worst irons in the game 30 years ago, along with their novelty 'wood' made of metal...that's it. callaway produced a sandwedge we couldn't give away back then...and NOTHING else! now they own golf and their equipment is the same novelty crap as anyone else's. remember callaway's S2H2 'innovation'? i was there. it was a GIMMICK, as history has proven. these companies are nothing but novelty equipment manufacturers that paid the right people at the right time to introduce their novelty crap to the game like it was some new progression, and if it wasn't for the criminal pga in sanctioning that novelty gear for tournament use, those companies would have died with their plastic junk... it was at that time that wilson could have done something, but didn't. true to corporate mindlessness and greed, wilson simply rode their wave of past success into the grave. only a truly insightful and astute management could save them now... my bet is that they are run by bean counters instead.

i would love to talk with the current president about social media marketing... it's pretty wide open what can be done to recreate mass appeal...but no one is yet doing it. what is being done by callaway and taylor made in the social media world is truly mediocre and uninteresting, but attracts undeserved fan support...proving that a powerful concept could very quickly turn heads back to wilson. i'm afraid there just isn't any management insight any longer...just bean counters trying to figure out how to be rich without innovating. the real trick is to STOP trying to innovate novelty golf equipment, which is meaningless and fruitless, and to start innovating the social media space!! get a hold of me...i have a program all worked out. i just figured it would be a smaller company with smart management that will take advantage.... but why not wilson? i still play fg-51's that i bought in 1991...my favorite tour blades ever.

You make a valid point. No golf company has flashed me with their content either - the only thing I remember is that guy getting a tattoo of the Callaway logo in exchange for some clubs. Apart from that, I feel like no golf brand has really thought outside of the box to make truly groundbreaking content. How would you see a company like Wilson innovate the social media golf space? I saw that they have started sponsoring guys like Ben Kruper, though I'm unsure how much reach that is really going to get them in the long term, and that's not really doing something different to their competition either.

i think the ben kruper thing is a big mistake.... 1. ben is not a player, so this association is a weak promotion of their gear. 2. the format of these wannabe players playing each other every week for nothing but shits and giggles is boring... i already cannot find any golf content that is either unique OR interesting, let alone ground breaking. i'm not letting the million dollar ideas out that easy just yet, as i'm hoping there is a company like wilson that is ready to pull their head out of their ass...but i'm doubtful. suffice it to say, it's not a big stretch to outclass the mediocrity that is currently garnering millions of views from millions of subs. it's a wide open door right now...i suppose someone will take advantage the next couple years. @@lmfgolf

@@tonysmario817 I appreciate you sharing your view Tony. Though it's not something that I've had much exposure to, it does resonate with me. The content that is most popular at the moment is getting a bit stale for me personally. It's been the same sort of stuff for a few years now, despite the production value having gone up drastically. The thing I'm wondering about with the Kruper promotion is whether or not the newly introduced or average golf fan truly knows (or even cares) about the biiiiig difference between a guy like Kruper and even the lower-end guys on the KFT. Maybe they're betting on personality-based influencers in the future. Then again, that approach is not going to help them climb out of the hole they've dug themselves. Cheers.

i agree with you. this 'influencer' based marketing has run it's course, and seen it's effect...now it's really just a circle jerk of the same million cheerleaders, with no appreciable penetration into the general golf world of people watching the tours on tv...which is why the kruper move is a negative one for me...he's not even a promising golfer...will never be a professional, and therefor will not bring wilson any significant relatability. would have been better for wilson to team with a golfer who can beat the yt influencers rather than back one of the lackeys. i regard that whole scene as hackeneyed and unworthy of the top sponsors...someone like wilson should seize the opportunity to take social media golf to another level...that is the untouched market that they can both penetrate and even front run. just imagine if some golf content suddenly appeard in our suggested viewing that was clearly superior in concept and production...would we not be instantly drawn to it because of the staleness of the current content? i'm willing to bet that not another year will go by before we see some attempts at what i'm talking about...it's just too obvious for any astute marketing minds to miss. i can think of half a dozen concepts that i would jump to watch, and easily get addicted to following... i'll bet you can too. @@lmfgolf
