Holo starlight The Sulli Act will do nothing. All it does is limit actual free speech. Korea’s problem is much more societally rooted. The real issue is that they are so much more judgmental of each other and that is what needs to be fixed for not just kpop idols but everyone in general.

We will answer for every word we say one day, personal experience as an ex-hater. For instance, the haters are now the center of hate, disgust and scorn. And they are attracting legal attention that possibly comes with legal consequences. The more shit they talk after Sulli's death, the increased likelihood for the Sulli act to be enforced. That's because they are telling the government agencies that the internet is more dangerous than they think. They are also telling government agencies that they cannot be entrusted with freedom of speech because they are irresponsible. They are telling the law enforcers that the internet can be another tool for murder, threats, violence and other crimes and thus far, without consequences. They are also telling law enforcers that cyber legal enforcement needs to be in place.

@Heracles N If that deserves to be bombarded with hate messages to the point she commits suicide, then you deserve the same treatment too. Because your statement demonstrates ignorance and a lack of intelligence. And it is people like you who proves the point that humans are worst than animals. Animals kill out of hunger or when intruded. So what did Sulli do? She went to people's Instagram and commented on their posts offensively? Or is Sulli food? Humans are the only species that I know of, who can derive pleasure out of hurting and killing others. And it is this aspect that make humans worst than animals.

KPOP specifically doesn't need to change, Korea needs to. This issue falls into too many areas outside of entertainment. I just hope people don't fully link Sulli's death to being an idol who was targeted just in entertainment because that only highlights this issue within the entertainment industry and not society as a whole who have come to normalize hate comments and anti culture to anything.

Think about how many social media pages are there tho and how many hate comments are posted practically daily. Not to mention the good or neutral comments. There isn't a bad comment section so let's just use a not so popular comment section. 1 to 2 million comments that team would have to go through how many videos? Not just mvs or their artists videos. Other artists videos. Which could total to over 10 million comments that's alot. Possible? Yes. But it would take alot and I mean alot of money to hire even just enough people to delete the comments and even then there will be overlooked comments. So what you are suggesting is very hard and would take years for companies to implement. A better way is to hire a team of people to take care of the artists.

The thing is, Korea's older generation thinks that mental health is just "a stupid phase" and that they'll "get over it soon". I think that mindset has been passed down to the younger generation because most of those haters probably think that mental health is a joke and that suicide doesnt exist, something like that. It's really sad because korea needs to modernize. Not in just their technolagy and business models, but also other people's feelings. They need to understand that mental health is just as important as everything else. I think that educational programs about mental health to students will be a great way to steer them away from getting stuck in that mindset. Lol this was lengthy.

I think this problem with malicious comments and cyberbullying is deeply related to Korean class culture where junior employees need to obey all commands of their boss without talking back; youngers need to obey elders. Also the work culture is very stressful, long hours with over-times, afterwork functions. These problems result in people being stressed themselves and they turn to the internet where they can vent, judge and express their negative emotion anonymously. It is absolutely no excuse for leaving malicious comments, however everything happens for a reason. Without changing the root cause, no law, acts and penalities will be about to stop this disease...

kpop is way worse though. and korea has major problems in stalking celebrities and going to the extremes to ruin someones career by leaking personal information. not to mention the crazy amount of critisism that idols get for the littlest things because they couldn't "maintain" their "perfect" image. & the idol industry is extremely competitive so being compared to others and put down is a breeding ground for anxiety and depression. it's terrible honestly, from the media, to knetz, locals, sasaengs to the company itself? one can only take so much of this bullshit. i'm not saying american singers or other artists don't have to go through bs aswell but kpop is definitely on an extreme level.

Although the 'Sulli Act' may sound like a great solution, I personally don't think it will help Korean society in the long run. Sure, using real names may decrease the likelihood of harsh comments, but then what about the right to one's privacy? People use alternate aliases on the internet all the time, mostly in a harmless way to express who they feel they are or another identity. Sulli obviously had one of the rudest comments made ever from what I have seen, but would this act do the same for actual constructive criticism? Artists grow and improve with feedback, even negative ones in order to enhance their work to their fans. Yes, positive feedback is, of course, important, but only receiving positive feedback will not help one to realize their mistakes or what they can improve at. As a psychology student in university, I have learned that restriction only leads to more loopholes to commit deviant behaviors. People will still find a way to create fake aliases on the internet even when this is made illegal. And let's say people still had the audacity to still comment malicious things with their real name and they got arrested and pay a fine, or whatever punishment they get. The people are not going to learn why what they did was wrong, but rather only feel sorry because they got caught. I think a better alternative is to really emphasize the importance of mental health. I know Korea has been improving with mental health awareness, but it needs to be pushed more. I know that education and careers are highly prioritized, even more than your family and health in Korea and are reflected in the schools and in the work environment. Cramming for all the important exams in a 12-hour school setting and working for 12 hours at a company can make you feel unmotivated to live a healthy (mental and physical lifestyle). If Korean society can find a way to not be so uptight yet still manage to produce effective results, that would be great. And I think that can start with implementing therapy/psychologist programs in various schools and companies, including Kpop agencies as Nathan said. I am a Korean-American and although I do not live in Korea, I personally became a psychology major in order to help raise awareness, because I have noticed mental health even among many people in my family, friends, and other circles are just not talked about or not taken too seriously. It all begins with being comfortable in expressing how you truly feel. I also grew up bottling up my own feelings and opinions that as soon as I reached adulthood, I didn't know how to communicate and relate with others, which gave me anxiety and depression as well. I don't think it's right to say that Korean people are the problem, but rather there is a problem in the Korean culture that instills such pressure to conform with society and always show perfect results at whatever you do. Many societies other than Korea are like this all over the world too and I hope that the whole world can be just a little nicer to each other while still being honest, and to not stick their nose up into people's personal lives and judge the way that they live.

Canada is a great example of what can go wrong. One guy interrupted a female reporter doing a live report with a vulgar expression, and some guy standing in the background (let's call him CableGuy) started laughing. This happened on a Friday, and by Monday morning, CableGuy was FIRED because the Social Justice Warrior Mob found out who he was and where he worked.

I do agree with creating awareness about mental health. But I also believe legal enforcement is also required. It's just like crime. Despite being educated that we should not commit crimes, there are those who still did it anyway. We need legal enforcement to handle such cases. Education and legal enforcement needs to go hand in hand. Just relying on one approach will have limited effect. As for rights to privacy, well, remember the tragedy of Princess Diana? Were the rights to privacy for these public figures respected? If anyone wants privacy, there is a simple solution. Limit personal info on social media just like how we do it in our physical social life. And let's face it, the truth is most netizens don't see the need to be responsible with their words and actions because they are using another ID. It's not their own reputation at stake, it's something else's. And if issuing a verbal threat, instigating suicide etc physically is illegal, does it make it right if done on social media? How many people are getting away with these online criminal acts? No policy is foolproof or perfect. But the fact is that deaths (not just kpop stars) are occurring due to the misuse of social media and no regulation is in place. To prevent more deaths, a short term solution is needed and legislation is the fastest way to keep things under control. Only then a long term solution like education can be effective. Without legal consequences, it is unlikely people will be bothered with mental health awareness.

I feel like everyone who talks about Sulli's struggles only talks about the hurtful comments and how it caused her depression. No one talks about her disassociative disorder, Sulli has been so direct about it through her songs and even her music video and the fact that her childhood, trainee period and idol promotions and lifestyle were a huge factor that influenced her mental health. I feel that these companies should not be allowed to admit children as trainees, there should definitely me a minimum age and the kids should not be limited to dorms and company premises. They should be able to lead a normal life outside of training and idol promotions so that they are able to develop normally both mentally and emotionally in wholesome and secure environment. These kids are lonely, they lack care and affection they needs guardians to protect and care for them in that age. They need proper emotional support, confidence and nutrition and sleep but instead they are told to train as much as they can while starving themselves. The culture is also very toxic be it the fans or antis, these companies need to step up and make huge changes in the trainee systems and promotions and also protect their artists from the hate. Also the fact that she was given her celebrity persona "Sulli" at a very young age before she even debuted is even more messed up.

It's a classic case for most child stars any where in the world...I mean... the list goes on and on... And Nevermind having social media on top of that. NCT 127's Jungwoo went on hiatus for the later half of 2019, and I'm wondering if SM Entertainment was being careful with his mental health. He is generally a very anxious and sensitive person and he only just debuted in 2018, so it's frustrating to think that he was overworked with stress from the 2019 North American tour, or just the difficult work schedule in general. I hope SM can learn from past mistakes and take better care of their idols. Jungwoo is back with NCT 127 with their recent comeback for "Kick It" and "Punch", but who knows what the future holds for him.

We should have learned when Jonghyun died You guys killed Sulli You guys killed Jonghyun If you have something bad to say *DON'T SAY IT!* You guys killed Sulli and took her away from her family. Do you want people to tell you to killed yourself? No you don't, You haters took away our beautiful Jonghyun and Sulli. I been crying since Jonghyun died and now that I heard that Sulli died I been so depressed that I been to the hospital five times in the past year I never want to hear other idol die.

Well said and a good way to address the issue. This channel couldn't have avoided comment, given the topic of the channel generally, and I think you made a respectful and meaningful video on the subject.

InternetsNathan, you are truly a blessing for doing this. Just by doing this, spreading awareness, help preventing, and being super respectful of idols, you have gained more of my respect for me. I've always loved these idols, and being a fan of them is what made me feel life and joy. It was devastating to see her, Jonghyun, and Hara pass away because of malicious comments and cyber-bullying. Thank you for this.

i never stanned f(x) but when i found out that she died i still cried, looking at old happy videos of her. it’s so sad, so disgusting how sick and mean people are. she *died* due them. and they still criticize her? disgusting.

“Why are people so mean to her?” This response doesn’t surprise me at all and is repetitive throughout the comment section. We tend to forget that in this big world there will always be different kinds of humans that exist even those who are toxic. People live in a generation that is fully immersed into social media and advanced technologies. My view on today’s social media world is “Whatever you do whether it’s good or bad, people will always have something negative to say.” (W.H. Auden). There’s a story I remember and talks about a boy asking his mother why people like to destroy things that are beautiful. She simply just says, “Well when you’re in a garden what kind of flower do you pick out?” The ones that are beautiful. Sure, we can provide small support systems like finding therapists but, we still have a long way of understanding mental health/illness. Drastic changes will take forever like a human evolution. The problems of cyber bullying and bullying in general is an endless issue that is still troublesome till this day.

Thank you for this video. I didn't know of Sulli's passing and thanks to your respectful wording, I kind of feel less shocked about it. May you rest in peace, Sulli. Poor girl... at least, you are free now. I am more skeptical about social media day by day. Obviously they kill, so let's have more concern and respect about each other.

thank you jyp, i hope jyp never changes. i really hope sulli is in a better place now. she deserved so much more.. cyber bullying and just bullying in general can take such a huge toll on your mental health.. as a victim of bullying i can't even express how anxious i feel everytime i go to school, how every day i am in fear i am gonna get judged again without even doing anything wrong, trying to seek help but getting told "just ignore them" "you are overthinking it" it hurts.. when you finally got the courage to seek help but those people who are suppose to help didn't.. its absolutely painful.. i can't even imagine sulli's situation.. she has eyes all over her, getting pressured and so much more.. i just hope wherever her soul is, i hope she's happy. i feel so bad i couldn't help her. i wish i was there for her.
