What Happened to Sentinels?

Sentinels were once North America’s most beloved Valorant team.
They were the best team in the world - and they looked unstoppable.
But somewhere along the way, everything went wrong.
Sentinels are still NA’s favourite team, but we had to ask - what happened to Valorant’s first champions?
And now that they’ve signed shroud, what does the future hold for Sentinels?

    I think sentinels had the NIP early game success. They were able to figure out a winning style quickly, faster than the rest of the teams during the game's first competitive seasons. Then everyone else saw what sentinels did and figured out their play style. Then they turned it against Sentinels. Sentinels hasn't really changed with the meta as time went on and hard stuck with their technically old style.

    This is true, but its more about the fact that the initial pro scene was very bad, like half the pro players on top tier teams couldnt even reach Radiant. I'm from EU and got Rad in ep1/2 and I only saw like 10 pro players up there. NA had even worse pro players, like the top teams consisted of 2 people who barely got immortal 3. Now dont get me wrong, I dont think that being Radiant is enough for someone to go pro, In aware that most Radiants suck, play undisciplined and cant cooperate. But still, if you want to compete at the top level, you have to be good enough on your own to reach top 500 against random people who work real jobs. That being said, Sentinels and TSM were basically the only team with 2-3 top tier players, and won just by talent. Now that its a level playing field regarding individual talent, teams with better strats and more practice dominate. Optic plays the macro game insanely well, while Sentinels kept playing the game like a slightly more coordinated solo queue. I legit had better teams in my ranked games, deeper strats and better IGL-ing then what Ive seen Sentinels do in some of their matches.

    This is true to some extent. NiP adapted to the changes, continued to play Tier 1 events and remained as one of the best teams for a long time. Sens on the other hand barely had any time to sit on their throne before getting destroyed by tier 2 rookies and didn't do much to change. Now only time will tell

The LCQ 2022 sentinels despite having 2 week practice was able to show they can almost beat the two grand finalist (Guard and 100T) by taking 1 map and going to Overtime. Been watching Val eSport since early days and I can honestly say, SEN took advantage of early game, found their style way faster while other teams were still trying to find their correct composition and didn't have such chemistry, synergy and weren't together for as long as SEN members were + SicK was insane, while now he took a time off due to personal problems, I believe. SEN was also heavily affected by meta changes, TenZ usually playing mostly Jett on competitive level. if he'd become more flexible as other duelists, maybe that would be even better. After their Tournament win, other teams caught up with the strats, counter-strats, proper preparation and putting extra work & focus on competing at Tournaments and/or specifically beating SEN. After that I can't feel otherwise than SEN shifting the focus into the streaming and now getting the franchise spot than actual competing. It's going to be fun to see how they'll perform in few days with the new roster, hopefully to see TenZ on Chamber.

    We can consider a team having an era when they dominating pro scenes and winning some S-tier competitions in a few years. (For examples : nip, fnatic, astralis at csgo or navi, og at dota 2) Sorry, but calling sentinels having an era just because they only got 1 s-tier is a funny (but dumb at the same time) joke.

  • @GHLukinator

    @GHLukinator

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@naufalhafiz9614 well its definetly an Era in comparison to the rest of Valorant, they didn't lose a match for around 8 months, dominating both in NA and world championships. On their championship run they didnt drop a single map. And considering how Valorant has only been out for around 2 years...8 months is a very significant portion. Csgo's case is vastly different as it has been out for so long and the meta is more stable than valorant. Csgo has been out for 10 years, if you put this into the same ratio of Valorant's timeline, it would be equivalently, one team not losing a match for over 3 years. If you were to say any team has had an Era in Valorant it would have to be Sentinels, if you think that Valorant has had no Eras thusfar, then that is your own opinion to have. I am simply pointing out that in Valorant's short history. The time period of Sentinels dominance is something that is memorable and significant for the people who experienced it.

  • @GHLukinator

    @GHLukinator

    2 жыл бұрын

    @UCr-kWKBTbURov5Wrs9Hs2tQ an Era doesn't have to be a long time, instead there has to be a resulting change due to the Era. For example the Victorian Era in human history was only about 70 years but during that time alot changed...if you compare this to something like the Bronze Age, lasting around 2000 years. The time maybe considered insignificant in comparison but that doesn't change the fact that so much changed as a result of the Era. The Sentinels Era changed the way teams approached the game which is what led to the teams downfall. If you want to compare it to something more realistic, the modernization of Japan happened during the Meiji Era following the Tokugawa Period. The Meiji Era was not very long, in fact it was less than 50 years but it modernized the country. Many traditions were abolished because they were no longer useful or no longer made sense. While the Era of the Sentinels in Valorant may have not changed Valorant to this extent, it did have notable changes in approaches to the game. Especially in the ways that teams figured out how to beat them. It made Valorant a much more tactical game than before this Era. This is similar to how Japan's new government brought about the abolishion of the Samurai class. They used Western firepower (in this case new agent comps) and new strategies that were specific counters to the old strategies that had been used over hundreds of years, in this case the previous tournaments. Despite the Samurai class attempting multiple rebellions, such as the Satsuma Rebellion, they were eventually abolished, similarly to the Sentinels strategies that were left somewhat in the past because they were no longer viable. Although it can also be argued that, rather than being a result of the Sentinels themselves, this is just a natural progression of the meta changing in the game itself but I still believe that this Era had a significant effect.

  • @GHLukinator

    In case people were wondering after reading the second comment, the other user had left another comment prior that they have now deleted, to paraphrase they basically had restated that Sentinels only won one international LAN and that they only dominated NA for 8 months. And that is a short period so it cannot be considered an Era.

Well, that's a common development EVERY competitive game goes through -- people start figuring things out and the pioneers like Sentinels dominance starts to wane out as other teams catch up to them. And as for talented players, that's also the consequence of the game aging. More and more people will play the game and those who have been playing it for the longest time start to figure things out and get better. Both of these lead to a more competitive scene where no one team is vastly ahead of all others. You can see this in CS:GO in the form of NIP.

    @@badreddinekasmi8919 It doesn't make sense, they benched their core smoke, where most of his smoke helped the team the most. Most smoke players are under appreciated in Valorant, look at other team, their smoke players are always under the radar whereas their teammate get the highlights, especially the top team. You don't see people talking about boaster mostly about his skills, it's mostly about his gimmicks and fun attitude or Optic gaming Marved, you don't see him being in the highlight despite being the smoke for Optic. Zombs was just a scapegoat at this point. Technically Zomb is toxic since the Brazil drama, but what he said about the team not practicing scrims is kinda right. You go nowhere with just streaming and expect to play good without practicing against other top level players. So far Sentinels had done nothing to improve until now where they started bootcamp.

    Sentinels were able to use csgo strats early in valorant and come up with a way to incorporate valorant abilities into their strats which helped them but most of their rounds were won by individual plays rather that advanced strategies. If you hear the comms from VCT of sentinels, most of the time sentinels just have basic ability usage and just running and gunning , pushing through smokes, etc which would catch other teams off guard. However now teams know how to counter Sentinels such as playing slow and holding chokepoints for sentinels to make a mistake by pushing into it as well as having more advanced ability usage and strategies that catches Sentinel off guard.A teams that is similar to Sentinels is Paper Rex with their aggressive playstyle and lurks with great timing but Paper Rex has ability usages that most teams doesn't even know of. Both Paper Rex and sentinel have 1 trait in common which led to them falling off, which is knowing when to be aggressive and when to play passive

    Paper Rex is a lot smarter than just "W-key." They understand how to attack their enemy's weakest points, but when the enemy doesn't give them that chance, they start to fail. However, their overall play is still good enough such that playing slow also lets them win. You can see on their Haven defense that they play very carefully and it wins them rounds because the enemy team expects a fast push but it never comes until 10 seconds left in the round.

  • @johnan06

    @@jakelee7083 Theres a reason why I said they have great timings but if you see the finals, they end up like what happen to sentinels whereby the other team was able to learn from their timings and capitalise on it.PRX also have a habit of rehitting the same site slow after getting an opening pick which maked it predictable too. Their opening picks was some of the times good, but what differentiates a good and a bad team is the ability to win a round consistently with a 5v4 advantage. Against FPX they would have so many rounds that they would have forsaken and jingg duo push and kill a guy and they just kept peeking and dying one after another . FPX also used the same exact strat by holding on bind for MULTIPLE rounds and PRX just kept going aggressive continuously on A showers even after knowing that. Right now, sentinels have bigger numbers but they are adding them instead of other teams with smaller number but multiplying them.(10+10+10+10+10 instead of other teams 8x8x8x8x8) If SEN finds a way to multiply those numbers, they could get back up there. 13:06 shaz.. its due to the fact that you think not streaming for ONE week is sacrificing anything. 90% of players who win a world championship will never stream until they retire. Or they hop on stream like twice a month. People get mad because Shazam ACTS like he's a hard worker when he's not. That's fine if you wanna be a pro and streamer but you're not going to be a world champion.

EU/CIS will always have teams on top of almost every eSports they care about because their people have the best dedication, strats, teamwork and mentality. working hard playing on estabilished meta in public match is not working hard it's just playing the game. able to shoot heads means nothing if players kept making mistakes here and there. it takes superstars playing on duelists or other fragging agents to brought other region to the top. right now, NA have yay, APAC have jinggg and f0rsaken but firepower just won't cut it when EU/CIS teams are playing like a single organism.

    What happened to Sentinels? Well what almost everyone saw coming. They were good in an early stage of the pro scene where the pro scene was still developing at its fastest. After the great succes everything looked great but teams caught up really quick cause of the difference in drive. Other teams especially from different regions trained more serious and harder so it shouldnt be such a surprise that Sen was surpassed so easily and quick. Stream over scrim is what made them fall of. Its purely their mentality cause they have the skill to be one of the top teams. But in order to be that they need to become less of a twitch showpony.
