People love naming styles because tagging stuff makes it work better online. They want to be found. Individualism gets lost in algorithms.

Exactly!!! People who want to be influencers also need to make content which is why they always name new trends lol. It’s ridiculous

I think one of the perks of being an introvert, is that fashion becomes easier to use as a tool of self expression. We are in our own litttle world and a lot of times since we don't go out as much, we dress how we feel most good in. It's like "well, nobody is around so... let me wear this silly long dress again" lol

I am an introvert but I love going out, talking and meeting new people, is just that in order to feel charged or good I need alone time, I don't think social difficulties equals introverted

@SieMiezekatze yup I think ppl lime confusing shyness, social anxiety or being anti-social as introversion...which isn't what we are at all, I love going out with close companions😊❤

Trends have always been a thing, and you shouldn’t beat yourself up for being part of the cycle. One of the other big things that happened in 2020, aside from the pandemic, is that magazines were dropping like flies. Partly that would be down to the increase in people being online, and the pandemic itself didn’t help, but they were a major influence on what people wore, and had been for a couple of hundred years in various forms. I’m one of your older subs (I’m 50) and my point is that these things existed in different formats way before social media, so it’s not the fault of influencers- just a new incarnation of what came before. I was 15 in 1988, and I was heavily into magazines at that point. I would rip out pages of anything I loved and store it in a ringbinder - everything from what to pack in a suitcase, to skincare advice, to fashion, to fitness. I still have that folder and I call it my Pinterest folder, because that’s essentially what I was doing! It’s no longer relevant to me now because I actually have Pinterest, but it’s kind of adorable and I’m nostalgic about baby-me. 😂

Love this!!! I feel like the overconsumption of media can definitely cause society to fall more into the trends of something seeing how sought after an item can be and also due to the obsession with tik tok seeing so much online can cause it to be hard for some to form their own ideas and personal style because everything is so easily available now

I’m looking forward to Tik Tok Bible Trends not being trendy. I love watching fashion content and I watch so many creators. I skip every “my trend predictions!!”, “making trendy Pinterest outfits from stuff in my closet!!” and “trends im skipping out on!” videos. I especially don’t get why even thrift content creators fall into this so hard. You’re at a thrift store. Trends aren’t there. You’re buying old shit from 2009 and most definitely 2017. I’d much rather see them thrift unique, cool things. Like whatever happened to just buying stuff you think is cute? I personally just uhhhh buy and wear clothes that’s cute. I don’t care what TikTok said about leopard print or how I’m wearing clashing trends, mob wife and coquette. Like what 😭

I recently just watched a vid where a girl tripped over herself saying that midi length isn’t trendy anymore but uh you can wear whatever you want but yeah it’s not as popular as before I guess. You are letting trends dictate your style. Take a deep breath. Absolutely no one except you thinks that something as basic as a hemline is out of style.

TikTok videos are telling people how to think and act so it doesn't surprise me that people are going there to figure out how to dress as well. There are definitely thrift KZreadrs who don't follow trends but they aren't the ones coming up in our algorithms lol

@@paygej8710 Yeah, sure, I just think it’s easy to disregard what a random 20 year old girl from Iowa is saying on Tik Tok and just wear whatever I, someone who has 0 in common and doesn’t have similar taste as this person, think is cute even though it’s uhhh *takes two random papers out of hat* it’s Wizards of Waverly Place coded. But yknow what, easier said than done. For me it’s obvious that one should just wear what they think is cool and not abide by such strict rules. I hope to run into more of those thrift content creators! Please, algorithm, present them to me! For now I’ll keep skipping every “thrifting spring 2024 y2k Pinterest scene girl vibes at goodwill!!!!” videos hehe

This is why I love someone like Chloe Sevigny. She has individual style that you can’t put in one category. Her style is true to who she is and sets her apart from the rest. True individual style will always standout, trends will fade.

Loved this video! I feel like social media can make it really difficult to find your style because it's so easy to become influenced and you forget what you really enjoy wearing and what makes you happy. Honestly, I think the best way to find your style is to get off the internet and social media. Once you take a break from it you really start to see clothes in a different way when you go shopping. You don't see something on the rack and think "this is so ___ aesthetic" or "this is such a trendy piece I have to buy it", instead you really begin to look at the piece in detail and think about how it would make you feel when you wear it. I'd love more videos on this topic ;)

i love tuba avalon's channel. i actually have to circle back and watch your video and see why she's referenced. but i love her channel because it makes fashion feel more like the art form that it is than accruing items that are perceived to be 'on trend'. I think someone below hit the nail on the head that a lot of content creators are somewhat responsible for this, and I don't even know how many people organically search this as opposed to it showing up in their algorithms. Of course, that is paired with partnerships and advertising. Creators could create new search trends by changing their content topics as well. Trends tend to dictate what shows up in fast fashion and then people will buy accordingly. It's a weird cycle.

I absolutely love your videos. You’re stunning and so knowledgeable you leave me feeling inspired every time!! I wanted to add a thought about walkable cities because I think it limits the choices in terms of footwear and the whole outfit really and that’s also what I’ve been seeing in a lot of cities. Of course there’s exceptions especially in nyc but sometimes I think that the way real life reflects practicality creates this effect of people adapting to it and you’re perceived as weird if you don’t. Whereas in cities like LA there is more creativity since you’re „time to shine“ is limited. Basically what I’m trying to say it walkability limits your creative freedom😅 but I agree there’s so much inspiration in trendy walkable areas and I love seeing all of the fashion💗

Thank you! I've been waiting for someone to say this, because it's exactly what I've been thinking for a long time, especially as a NYer. A walkable city like NYC will destroy your shoes, and that factors a lot into how I approach footwear in relation to my everyday outfits.

I personally think trends can be really fun. But where it goes wrong, is when people ONLY wear trendy things, and just forget about the other clothes they own. I think if you see a trend you like, you should participate, by first seeing if you already have it in your closet. And THEN wear it for a while. For a long time! Even when its not perfectly trendy at the current moment. For example, I LOVE the coach double bag trend. But I already have 2 bags in my closet that work. So I'm not going to rush to the store to buy something I already have?? I think one thing that can make a person instantly stylish is when they WEAR and RE-WEAR their clothes.

Idk if this is gonna make sense lol but I've always loved styles that are similar to what is now popular as "coquette" so I feel like altho it seems like I'm just participating in the trend, I don't mind coz I feel happy that I finally have access to the items I've been wanting (I'm plus size so I've never been too lucky finding cute clothes that fit well.) Even after everyone is done with the ~trend~ lmao I'll still be wearing it 🎀 I don't like to follow trends tbh. I will wear things that aren't trendy anymore bc idc ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ wear what you want! I was wearing ballet flats when they weren't trendy and I even had comments from people that they were "ugly" but then they got trendy? 😆

  • @alexacrdro
    @alexacrdro4 ай бұрын

I will say something that contributes to fashion trends inhibiting personal style growth are influencers that make content around buying clothes to make content based on what's trendy in the moment. It's not sustainable to be chasing trends as a content creator AND as a consumer bc it's exhausting to keep up. I'd much rather watch someone come up with their own personal takes on trends with clothes already in their closets instead of them simply buying whatever meets the prompt. It encourages viewers to try things they wouldn't usually and think differently about the clothes they already have. That's where people's personal styles shine! Pushing your wardrobe to try current trends speaks more to your skills as a 'stylist' than just buying hot items imho

I wonder if there’s a relationship between the creation/popularization of the term “pick me” and the amount of fashion trends. I feel like once the culture shifted and said it’s okay to like things that other people like, trends on a single item or a unified image became more popular. I don’t know if that makes sense… just a random thought lol
