WHAT HAPPENED TO MY RS6 V10 TWIN TURBO??... ITS NOT GOOD

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video we get the RS6 back on, it was supposed to be fixed, but there's a reason I've pretty much abandoned it and its not looking good.

A pair of new Melett turbo cores for a V10 RS6 can currently be had for £350 on eBay. I don’t think it would need much more than that from what you’ve shown. It would be good content if you fixed it and it wouldn’t cost too much either. Too nice to part out. Good luck

Speaking from experience on your b8 rs4 engine rebuild videos, they helped me massively when rebuilding my b7’s engine. Can only imagine it would be the same for other people too. Just depends whether or not you can take the hit financially. Might be worth making a video with the list of everything you’ll need to replacing and phoning Audi to see how much it’ll cost you. Then you’ll be able to see if you can afford to do it. It’ll no doubt make good content but if your not going to make any money selling it on is there any point.

I’d love to see you fix this car because we really need to understand what is wrong with this car. It seems to me that this is an inflection point in your YT channel. Are you the kind of guy who gives up when the going gets tough or are you willing to take a hit? I’m a subscriber to M539 Restorations as well and Sreten certainly is willing to take the rough with the smooth. Just watch his Albina B7 experience if you need convincing! I know, your channel isn’t the same as Sreten’s, and that’s neither good nor bad, but the RS6 is far from being a salvage vehicle in my opinion. I know that an engine out turbo restoration is going to be time consuming and expensive but I think you know that you’ve got to do it to close out this project. You might not make a profit on this one but break even or slight loss is worth it to get this machine back on the road. Thanks for everything you do.

Personally, I love that these cars even exist; along with the V10 M5 and the V10 Diesel Toureg etc. They are all fast disappearing due to owners just giving up on them; i cant see them depreciating any further and if i had the cash id buy a V10 M5 and one of these RS6's tomorrow. It all depends on finances and your attachment to the car. You were going to sell it on so it doesn't seem to be an investment or a long term keeper for you. For a fix up and move on, you'd have to weigh up the estimated cost of repair v how much cash was already tied into it and then the ultimate resale price for a notoriously troublesome car with 215k miles on it - you can factor in an estimate for KZread revenue of what a strip down / rebuild series might bring in for you of course. I'd speak to a few specialists on costs to recondition the turbos; on the basis that you remove them and send them on. It will give you a chance to have a look at all the gaskets / seals / pistons etc. in the meantime to try and rule out anything else.

  • @blakops316

I had a similar issue with my B7 2.0tfsi - intercooler pipes full of oil and exhaust blowing excess smoke. I was told it was the turbo, so I changed the turbo but the issue persisted. I eventually figured out through much research that it was the plastic rocker cover, which as you know is part of the PCV system that was causing the problem. The plastic welds underneath had separated so oil was being sucked up through the cover under boost and being sucked back into the turbo with the recycled blow-by gasses. I changed the rocker cover and it solved the issue, I also changed the PCV valve at the same time. All was well for a couple of weeks then the issue came back! But this time it was the new PCV valve had failed!! I replaced the PCV with a delete plate and a catch can - it's been perfect now for almost a year.

I reckon the turbos aren't draining oil fast enough, could it possibly an issue with the dry sump?? If it pools inside the turbo it'll just piss out past the seals into the exhaust and compressor housings, even with a brand new turbo it'll do it (I found out the hard way). Chances of both turbos loosing the same amount in large quantities???

Impressive, even shocking amount of oil in the intercoolers/hoses. However, reading around, I see that it's apparently not uncommon to find quite large amounts of oil in there. Having said that though - this would appear to be accumulations over a long period. Without going back through the other videos I can't remember whether you'd drained the oil out of here before and this has come back in a very short period (though your comments about the oil level drop are suggestive). If that's definitely from just a few low stress miles plus some idling, I struggle to see how it can be coming from anywhere but the turbos due to the sheer volume. Seems that it has to be from a pumped source! Yet double turbo failure doesn't seem right to me. Have you considered the turbo drains? Turbos are usually pressure fed (through small orifices) and gravity drained through large pipes and if the oil is coming in faster than it can drain away, it gets through the seals, even when the seals are ok as they are fairly rudimentary things and don't like pressure. If the oil can drain away without getting pressurised, you'll not get a big leak. On my ancient A6 TDI the turbo bearings are absolutely shot, huge amount of radial play, so the sealing must be compromised, yet oil use is very modest. Given the amount of effort (and expense) involved in turbo swapping, I'd do all the in-car diagnosis possible. Run with the turbo pipework off and see if the oil is coming from there? Run with the breathers off and see if blow-by is excessive? Compression test/cylinder leak-downs..... Good luck with it - will watch with interest if you decide to carry on with it. Nick

content-wise, it's a great one. But fully appreciate the "is it really worth doing it?" train of thought. Depends on how far gone the turbos are - if they can be re-conditioned cheaply then maybe worth doing it? TBH, only you know if the KZread income from the RS6 has made it worthwhile, factoring everything in and the eventual sale etc...... either way, it's been an interesting journey so far.

  • @NedNew
    @NedNew2 жыл бұрын

If the engine was running as normal, it should intake blowby gas to the engine by using the negative pressure in the crank case and the pressure in the turbo should also be negative so that the oil will not blow out of the turbo. The blowby gas that occurs at the piston ring is because of the friction and not the proper exhaust of the gas - this again is likely due on the oil leakage from the turbo when it's at very high pressure in the crank case. Sometimes the oil used in the turbo doesn't flow back smoothly to the oil pan and this can also cause a oil leakage.

Glad to see a rs6 update. Shame about the reason though. That amount of oil has got to be turbos surely? Just so wired that both have gone together?! Pretty much same issue/symptoms as my old Audi B5 S4. One of the turbo seals failed. Oil inside the intercooler and one pipe of the exhaust… same amount of smoke as you…as soon as the car started it was thick fog. My issue was caused because the intercooler was cracked… and was over spinning the turbo on wide throttle. Bye bye oil seal.

I'm no expert mechanic but stronger on logic. The chance of both turbos having worn at EXACTLY the same number of spins, without there being a direct cause of the turbo failure, is close to impossible odds. Just replacing both turbos would see them fail again. Twin engine passenger aircraft are allowed to fly to USA because the likely hood of both engines failing on the same trip is sooo remote. Same logic here. Best of luck.

Turbo's and especially old turbos don't like to sit around doing nothing, the shaft seals will pass oil when you start it and just let it idle, they like a little bit of boost to seat and seal correctly but I suspect after 200K they are both simply just worn. Not unusual for them both to fail around the same time, they are both doing equal amount of work so will wear equally. A turbo rebuild shouldn't break the bank.

Depends what the car owes you in terms of what you paid for it and current repair investments. Persoanlly I would keep it and repair it, these V10 twin turbos are going to be quite scarce in a few years time so look at it as an investment - It will appreciate. I own a Panther Black C7 RS6 with the new twin turbo V8, these also sfuffer from PCV system issues and like a drink of oil too, howeveer I would never part with it, absoloute dream car. As others have said, go for Hybrid Turbo's (assuming the engine checks out ok) and keeep it until its value starts to go up, then consider selling it.

Turbo oil seals goosed, car been driven to it's full potential (repeatedly thrashed) on the motorway and turbos not cooled sufficiently before being shut down. Heat build up in turbo internals is massive, oil cools as well as lubricates the bearings / seals. I've had Turbo diesels for 30+years ,do a lot of motorway miles as quick as legal so pull into ns lane at the 1 mile sign to my exit and tootle along as a cooling exercise..

Miss fire was probably caused by the oil in the aftercoolers blocking all the air to the engine. Miss fire cleared once the engine sucked in enough oil to allow the air to pass through the coolers. Can you get the turbos rebuilt?

Dean, looks like Turbos. How about with the car on the lift, compressor pipes off, start the engine, watch the turbo compressor housings for oil - simple. There should be none. You are ready to do the test now, will cost you nowt. Then you know the cost of repair vs return. Good luck.

Dean, I discovered your channel when you did the engine rebuild on the RS4, and got me hooked. I'd love to see you do this, in detail, and as said before in other comments I think your sub's will pass 100k. Do a "buy me a coffee", there's enough people on here wanting to see you rebuild it, so I'm sure a few ££ put forward would help👍

It'll be interesting to see the job completed, but hazarding a guess, cost of a single turbo being roughly ~£400/£500 so potentially 1k to repair. Other option would be to drop some hybrid turbos on.

Get the engine out and fix it, no oil being pushed out of filler ?, Oil in pipes seems very excessive although with that amount of oil I would have thought the insides of the turbos would be dripping oil, would love to see the car fixed.
