Wow, that's one beautiful tank. Iwagumi is my favorite style, especially the tanks by Takashi Amano. There's perfection in simplicity. Also, I wish shallow tanks would get more love. They are simply sleek and stunning. Congrats on becoming a monk!

It's a lovely tank, glad you didn't give up. Can you get flagfish in The Netherlands? They are native to Florida and will eat blackbeard algae. I'd have research again, but I believe there is at least one kind of snail that will eat it as well. As for the CPDs, make sure they are getting enough O2 since your CO2 is pretty high. Although it sounds like some sort of wasting disease that is not impacting the cories.
I think everyone learns from their mistakes and then we become more careful, so don't worry. The main thing is that you managed to stabilize the aquarium and it's beautiful.✔
It’s one huge learning curve, if we don’t fail, we don’t learn. Keep it going Mark 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
MJ: your persistence will pay off in the end. Don’t give up on the big shallow. Your vids have taught me more than you know. Your goal of the channel helping people I believe has made it’s mark many times over. We all learn more each day. You are an inspiration to many. Road blocks happen. Hang in there. I look forward to your posts. They have given me many ideas for my tanks. All the best to you from your buddy in San Diego, Tom 🏄🏼♂️
The patches of crypts are so big and lush🌱🌱
The big shallow looks amazing, it is looking better and better the more established it gets! Keep up the great work mark!!!
Travel is always a little bitter sweet when you have aquascapes at home. Finding that balance between being able to have high impact layouts and being able to neglect them from time to time is always challenging. Great video! Glad to see you’ve recovered the tank 🤘🏼
It's great that you stuck with it. I know I've learned the most when the problem seems overwhelming. Thanks for this vlog post!
glad you shared your mistakes and not giving up on this shallow tank. i'm dealing with blue-green algae also, finding the best way to treat it tooooo.
Great approach! I'm learning from you how to be patient and try to solve problems, not run away from them. This is how we all learn and gain experience.
Hi, MJ. Thanks for posting your experiences with the problems you faced with your new aquarium. Every hobbyist, even the most experienced, go through these situations. But, you are doing very well. And as for your fish, with their spine bent and dying, maybe it could be due to the Bacteria. Disease - Tuberculosis: - Apathy, Emaciation, Retracted Belly, Curvature of the Spine, Loss of Color, - Gravity - Fatal. Thank you.
thanks for the update. i really like how honest and raw it was. alot of YT peeps only show the good. its nice to see the full story and nice come back!
Great to see you coming out the other side of the issues, and it's refreshing to see someone else having a tank that isn't perfect - we've all been there (and will all go through it again). It's what makes the moments of balance so rewarding! I had an issue with BBA in my nano, it spread throughout the tank and I couldn't get on top off it. In the end dosing the tank with Flourish Excel killed it all within days (and the Marino moss ball I didn't think to take out). It might be a good option to consider
I am glad that you show your 'fails' as well as your successes. As you said, it teaches the rest of us and guides me through things yo avoid. Thanks for sharing it all.
Hey Mark, this is my favourite aquarium by far, it's great you highlight your problems with it and can def understand your frustration, just stick with it mate, it will come good with time and patience, anyone can choose the easy way out, but percerverance and patience is king, well done pal, big respect!! 👍👌
The best part of your channel is that you are brutally honest and it definitely helps people who are new to the hobby as well as experienced guys to learn!! Love it!!
beautiful recovery. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you didn't give up. Your issues are a lot like what I've been going through with one of my tanks. The one I texted you about. My carpet plants are finally growing, still need to add more.
Thanks for the honesty! I’m sure the challenge of changing to a bigger tank has been compounded by the holidays. It’s worth considering adding some specialised livestock to combat the BBA; I had small amounts of hair algae that I couldn’t seem to rid myself of with tweaking setup or dosing Excel so I added two SAEs - very active fish, hair algae all gone.
well was your trips fun. thanks for sharing
Appreciate your honesty and admire your perseverance.
It can get a bit tiresome dealing with a stubborn algae in a tank. I know them feels. Good to see the big shallow coming together now. 🌿
Certainly don’t give up! I’ve custom ordered my shallow tank 900 x 40 x 60 Great source of information and inspiration All the way from West Oz
Way to stick with it, you keep me inspired. I’m struggling with some serious crypt melt on a recent aquascape and it’s killing me! You inspire me to remain patient. Would love to see you put some chili rasbora in there. That little red fish would be so pretty with all those green plants!
So glad to see you didn’t give up! The tank looks great. I had an algae problem too and the only thing that helped was leaving the light off unless I am basically looking at the tank. Lol! Much better with no algae!
Glad you didn’t give up on the Big Shallow. Travel and upkeep does become taxing . But you did recover! Hooray for progress. Pygmy corys are the best. They keep me entertained, too.
The tank made a great recovery! Still some time needed to finish up cleaning the algae residue, but you’ll definitely get there 💪🏻
Hey Mark great video! It looks like the plants are starting to win the battle it’s getting better! Would love to see some dwarf cichlids or something in the big shallow. Thanks for the update!
It can be a frustrating hobby and equally very rewarding one :) Glad you stuck it out! I’ve got one of mine that’s giving me grief as well, but every time I see even minor improvements - makes he happy I didn’t just restart ;)
Great video and good advice based on personal experience as it is able to encourage others to not give up easily when problems arise.
I hope you are well also!
Never give up, I really like this Chanel, thank you for the content from Mexico 🇲🇽
you could use bio-exit green for the algae, it "resets" the tank, so after 2 uses it helped my tank a lot, now my plant edges are not covered by grey algae anymore
amazing job. really superb update. you always show us true things. i think go with carpet and give more chance to it. goldy
Great video, I love that shallow tank!!!!
Masterline products baby, best out there! Been using those for about 2 years, very happy with the results.
Thanks for uploading this.....so I guess I'm not the only one that took a holiday and came back to algae. In my case green hair..... Yes, we learn all the time...so glad you didn't give in and of course investigated your water params as a possible culprit. I like the way you run honest experiments and the presentation of you channel. Liked and subscribed! Best wishes from Ireland.
That light definitely is very powerful. Keeping that in mind and that plants need more nutrients the more light you put on them I tend to reduce my light intensity before I leave and ask a friend to once a week add a precise volume of an all in one fertilizer with a seringe.
Cześć, świetny kanał. Z przyjemnością oglądam. Na BBA u mnie świetnie się sprawdził Octenisept. Podczas podmiany spryskaj skały, zalej wodą i wszystkie będą czerwone. Po tygodniu łatwo zejdą przy następnej podmianie. Pozdrawiam
Thank you for sharing
Have simmilar problem with BBalgae. My tank 100x50x50. Changing water every week 50%. Very useful is using Cliton snail. They do work well - cleaning rocks. Wish you well with your tank!. Cheers
Hello Marc, I had the same problem with black Brush algae . I had too much silicat in the water. I started a second filter with silicat remover and after 2 weeks there where no more New algae.
Love the big shallow now brother. Looks top quality 👌🏼. I’ve got glosso in my tank in my last Re-scape video, it’s grown totally different than yours has. I’m thinking it may be something to do with the Way We planted differently and possibly something to do with the Co2. Mine didn’t see any Co2 for about 6 months. I had 2 pots initially, only ripped them up into quarters, and planted them very close together so the way it’s grown out is very thick. Took along time of course, and I’d say I still have about 1/4 of the tank to cover. But I’ve only just let the rest of the carpet start taking over, as I’ve removed some hard scape in the vid, and added the new C02 rig.
Am keen to see how you revive this aquarium without the nuke methods … and watching it recover back to a perfect balance. I have a large aquarium with lush black beard algae on my wood but it’s ‘contained’ and I want to start tweaking conditions so it disappears on its own good time due to perfect conditions. CO2 and light balance seem to be the trick … loving your insights and experience. Love to see the journey !
So glad you didn't rescape! I love the big shallow!
Hey buddy you do a fantastic job your very creative and your channel has some great content all the best Martyn 👍
My experience with gloso has been that it has a certain amount of light it wants and then the more you add just complicates everything. I would describe my experience as being most successful with it under "medium" level lighting of about 1-0.5w/USG. When I've raised the light above those levels my scapes just turned into algae farms.
Also, don’t get rid of the big shallow! Even with the obstacles, it is still a beautiful tank.
maybe try spraying the rocks with seachem excel, I tried it on some BBA on wood and it helps. It might not be as effective as H2O2 but it is way less damaging to your plants/lifestock :)
damn that recovery is amazing!
I'm glad you taught us here how to not give up... A few things I would have done in case this would have happened to me, 1. For the rocks I would have picked up a metal brush and scrubbed every bit of algae from them, just holding it into stable position and scrub things off. If you don't like the algae parts going into water, you may ask someone to take a outlet hose and suck the scrubbings immediately...and other hose would pump fresh water in. Basically a running water change. 2. Nuke them with seachem excel...not directly onto rocks/leaves but by dosing a little extra in water. 3. For the fishes getting skinny, it could be due to internal parasites. When you bring in new fish, treat the whole tank with API general cure or fritz Paraclease/ similar composition. It is a must. 100% of the fishes have internal parasites in them. Some survive and others perish away slowly. Just acclimatization is not enough. If you have already done that, then probably you got a bad batch of fishes...or some other disease... PS : you did a tremendously good job with the scape and plant selection. I would love it if you post more updates of this one. It looks amazing. Keep up the great work 👍👍🙏❤️
Great video 👍.
Alge on rocks : try spraying with liquid carbo when you do a water change and they are out of the water, let it sit on for a few minutes before filling water back in
I believe its your lighting....I'd get #2 chihiros vivid 2s and get rid of that light...or 2 ada rgbs....good video Marc...
I have had the same issues with danios.
I think an army of amano shrimp will help with the BBA no end I had a BBA issue last year and added amano's and the they soon made short work of it , my BBA was Co2 related and having now dialed in the Co2 I don't have the problem any more. Well done for the perseverance - there is light at the end of the tunnel stick with it and you will get there 👍
dont give up you got this!
Look into getting a simple RO/DI unit to help with your at home water for the tanks.

I second that. Dropping my KH from 7 to 1 significantly reduced bba in my tanks without changing any other parameter. Even getting it from 10 to a more acceptable level like 5 helps many plants a lot. But the sweet spot for many plants is around 2 KH or less. Higher Waterhardness makes it morr difficult for plants to take up nutrients (slower) but algae doesn't care. Calcium should be at 20 ppm and Mg at 10 ppm (roughly). Which results in a GH of 6 then Plants have all they need without strugling
Tnx for the video.. sorry for late comment
Hey man. What a struggle! Yeah BBA is one of the worst algae to get rid of. You're right. In my experience I think tanks with soft water are doing better. Recently I tested the water parameters in one of my nanos, and I figured it's quite low. PH 6.4~6.6 KH 3 GH 0. Fish and plants are doing very well. Just a small issue with BBA indeed, but I add liquid carbon daily in direct injection and it works. Maybe you should try this and a iron toothbrush as well.
Don't rescape! The tank looks so much better now and I can't wait until everything carpets.
The 4th Planted aquarium I have from day 1 I use seachem excel daily supplemented with passive CO2 has work wonders. No algae growth. The excel gives time for the plants to establish while eliminating the algae.
hey! everyone has algae phases ..just show your tank no matter the condition...love your video presentation!
Wow, you learned exactly the same thing that I did. 👍 I have also everything tip top. CO2 allot of LED lightning daily dosage pump of fertilizer plus fertilizer in the substrate and so on.💪 Most of my plants just slowly stopped to grow.. ..until i looked at the water parameters.🤔 Same here KH at ~10 dH and higher. But I went another route and cut the KH by using RO water. Aiming for around 7 and that is still rather high but it is the lowest my cichlids like.. But plant growth is back on track and growth is great with 7 dH of KH. Probably it could be even better with lower KH but I will never know. 😅 Anyway I am super glad that i found the issue of almost no growth and I now understand why I consider plants as hard to get healthy growth on them when fighting against this invisible opponent. 😢 And why others might not understand: "what the problem is when it is just to plant them and they will grow automatically." When they have low KH where they live..🚣 It is crazy that only one little thing can be off and it has that BIG of an impact! Especially when everything else is optimal..🤔 Good that you did not give up and I understand your struggles when I have went through the same nightmare.. And I had even easy plants in my tank! 😤 Anyway consensus is if your KH is to high it doesn't matter if you have the correct lining, substrate, CO2, fertilizers and so on. KH will have the upper hand and make you fail in the long run if not corrected!🤔💧💦🎁
Fijne video! Mijn eerste die ik van je zie.
Maybe a few siamese algae eaters could help you with the BBA? Plus I think they would look amazing in this tank.
Dank je wel...
I had BBA and it started due to lack of CO2. Once it took hold, it took quite a while to stop propagating. I would even say that the existing algae did not simply die off - I had to remove it. That includes bathing the hardscape in bleach. I think you overdid it with light in the first place. Glossostigma does fine under medium light (I have 110Watts in 600l tank -> 50umol PAR ). And it would be ok with only 6 hour photoperiod per day. Good luck!
Gave video wederom!! Ik heb zelf ook last gehad van black beard alg oplossing was voor mij een tandenborstel en maar poetsen uiteindelijk is het probleem bij mij opgelost. Tot op Vivarium 😁😁😁
Hey MJ. Why don't you consider mechanically removing the algea? (like with an electrical toothbrush)
Hey! Fantastic video. I want to ask about the cryptocoryne brown you have in the tank. How old is it? I have the wendtii brown and it looks exactly same size, while I was expecting it will be much more larger plant after maturity. It's been more than 3 months the size looks not so different that what's there in your tank. Is this a small variety?

Wat is de naam van je doseerpomp aub? En waarom heb je precies gekozen voor het masterline ph- product ipv osmose te gebruiken? Bedankt alvast
Just make sure everything is double checked before u go on vacation..... I'd suggest waiting and making a new batch of co2 the night before u go on vacation so then it won't get weak while your gone
Cyanobacteria is a pain. I've done blackouts, meds, hydroperoxide and nothing seems to get rid of it.
Attendu ! 😉😎
The algae problem(s) might be due to the lack of water circulation in some area of your tank. You might need a powerhead at the ithe end or a second filter for instance. As for the danios, it might come down to the lack of calcium in your water due to the Kh -.
Keep it up ✊🏻
Hi! I never tried it by myself but I found sth maybe worth to try. It's called Easy Life Carbon. On the other hand, I had brush algae also in my old aquarium and after a while there where all gone. Or you give a try with floating plants.
I'm glad you didn't give up, but I learned nothing.....my uwagumi is a mess and I think removing the hair grass is the only option. I have tried algae remover but that killed plants too. Even liquid carbon dont work anymore. I don't want to do another blackout. I'm now playing with the lights and co2, after 2wks I might rescape with loads of plants like all my algae-free tanks.

Hi, I like your channel!!!! You did not ask for advice but I would like to share with you my experience With Glosostigma. it tells me that the most important with this plant is parasite light from the winodw. It looks like you have a lot. That is why it goes too hight.
Maybe some shrimp for the big shallow? I think a huge colony of some blue velvet or Bloody Mary neocaradina shrimp would really make that scape pop!!!! Thanks for great content. Can’t wait to see what your next set up will be!
@MJAquascaping

You should add red cherry shrimp or Amano shrimp! I haven’t seen a speck of algae in my tanks even on holiday.
these scapes keep getting better
im dutch 2 im learning a lot of yor movies!, got since 2 months my own tank of 50 liter, and also got algea. But you learned me not be panicking, so i wont and i keep going on and change some routines, mayby it works....
Hi, what kind of automatic fertilizer dosing system are you using? Please try to continue finding the rootcause for the problem. This is what all the followers are looking for :-)
Hey Bro “ try to put in the long nose red shrimp !! It definitely help you to settle down the BBA...Well you can try to remove the co2 regulator and let the co2 run for 24/7 “ that’s the only way to stabilise your PH & CO2 level “ probably will solve your algae’s problem...
Looks great in the end!! I had a big group of Tinwini Danios in my 90p tank as well, and the exact same thing has been happening to them as you describe, while all other fish and shrimps are perfectly fine.. What intensity do you use on the skylight now? And what schedule?
@jeremylan4519

Hey, random but the same thing has been happening to my group of tinwini danios… I wasn’t sure if it was fish TB or not, did any of your other fish end up getting sick? Seems like it may just be an issue with danios as they reach old age since MJ and others in the comments have had the same issue, mine are around 1.5years old

I think tank still seems nice, if you reduce the lighting time a bit maybe it would help. Nice video.

Saya juga pernah seperti ini MJ
Tijdens een waterwissel Easy carbo of Perox met een kwastje op de rotsen smeren is misschien een optie? Dan kun je de planten ontwijken!
Mark spot treat the two big rocks with liquid carbon. I use a syringe and it kills it in a day. Don't treat the water column but get it directly on the algae. Other then that the tank looks amazing. Good job bud.

Never ever ever going to use liquid co2 anymore. I lost two fish... glutaraldehyde is used as a pesticide and has been used to sterilise equipment. It has been banned for human use since 2014. Use your own judgement.
Make big water change 2 times per week.and do not overfeed fish.if you fedding always switch off the filters.also put some liquid co2 and put little bit more.for the black algie is best Crossochelius siamenis.i hope after 1 months will be clean tank.
i understand you I have been invaded with brush algae cleaning patience I added a filter oase I spin in a 90 litre with a 100 and a 250 and with patience now it is one year old, all alone I turn to the water tap water is a hard one like you but never hu of nitrate and phosphate your bin I think it is not enough cycling know what I was told of patience I will leave you continues like this to you, I will try to send it to you - 👍👋😇❤️❤️
