I bought a Luxfer 80 off a co worker around 1997, paid $20 for it. Tank was black, didn't have a scratch on it. The guy I purchased it from had no recollection of where it came from. He said it was in his closet for years. I don't remember how old it was but I made at least 100 dives with it. It passed Hydro 1 or 2 times. It failed around 2018. I think. It's now the leg of an underwater checker, chess, table. No complaints. Thanks George S. I can't remember your last name.

Do you remember if it failed Hydro or Visual inspection? Aluminum rarely fail hydro, but it can happen. Thanks for the comment and your subscription to my channel. I have many more videos in mind, right now I'm in the middle of summer madness with little time to post.

@@scubatechkeylargo I don't think they even tested before they condemned it. It was one of those tanks that was made from the aluminum that was defective.

thanks for the info, I still have a 50cf and 13cf from the mid 80's in the garage with air in them, they have never been empty other than inspect or hydro - never failed a hydro, but no one will fill them so they just sit there - put two 80's and another 50 out at the curb just over a year ago when I picked up a new Catalina 80 for beach water metal detecting - about to give up on tanks and get a Blu3 Nemo - it would be a lot less work for this mid 70's body of mine -

I've seen the Nemo diving system, haven't use it but I would like to try it. I've used the Brownies Third Lung and use Snuba for lobstering. It's a good feeling without tanks on your back.

Double 60's must have been awesome to dive with. I understand that Luxfer UK has different cylinders than what we have in the US. Recently a small bottle from Luxfer UK made it to my shop, it was stamped with "Mini Breather" on the crown, very cool. Not long ago a bottle from Luxfer Australia also made to my shop. It's awesome to see how many different cylinders are circulating. I'm finishing up a video on Hydro testing will post soon. Thanks for watching,

Do steel tanks have the same issue? I have a 1971 HEALTHWAYS 72 cu.ft. Tank. Any thoughts on that?

Neck cracks have only been seen in aluminum tanks, steel from the 1970's can become rigid, which will fail hydro. Steel tanks stay flexible if cycled regularly such as filling and hydro testing. Tanks that are in the garage for 20 years without use have a high probability of failing hydro. A simple test you can do at home is to "tap"the tank on the side wall with hammer, listen for bell tone, if the sound is dull the steel is rigid.

@@scubatechkeylargo Well, I took that tank, the 1971 steel HEALTHWAYS 72 cu.ft. to the dive shop for a hydro test. I'll keep you posted on the results.

@@scubatechkeylargo My 1971 steel HEALTHWAYS 72 cu.ft. Passed hydro. I just bought a January 1989 Luxfer aluminum 80 tank. It had hydro dates of 1994 and 1997 I’m taking to the dive shop for a new hydro tomorrow.

Don't bother with those old cylinders! Scrap them and get new! Even the newer 6061 cylinders will crack, so replace them every 15-20 years.
