This is really fascinating. I'm jewish and have quite a few jewish friends whose families came from Iraq and also Iran. Their stories are so moving and I wish everyone could hear them. I'm thinking of writing a book about them. There's so much ignorance when it comes to jewish history and our culture, and it's such a complex and richly multifaceted subject. Beautiful Video. I personally come from the Mualem family, a well known and well respected one from Baghdad. My great grandfather was a very successful businessman, he owned many businesses over his life and was extremely rich, almost as much as the royalty. However, when push came to shove, he lost everything. When they left for Israel, they had nothing but themselves. My great grandmother (great grandfather's wife) was 6 months pregnant with my grandmother when they left and when my grandmother was born she had to sleep on my great grandmother's stomach for as long as they had to be in the maaborot. During the farhud, my family hid in the basement of their home for 2 days. These lessons we must never forget.

It was my great grandparents and one or two of my grandmother's siblings who are either gone z"l or have dementia. My great grandparents lived in the Jewish quarter of Baghdad but they were extremely rich. Their house was surrounded by brick walls with glass shards on top so it couldn't be climbed. This is likely why they survived. I am very sad to hear your story, but I am also proud of your grandparents from standing their ground and keeping on even after the Armenian genocide and then the farhood. It is a story which highlights the Jewish people's determination and bravery.

Until the Brits and French carved up the Middle East it was very multi faith and culture. I’ve spent time in Jordan Morocco Eygpt all still have minorities. Egyptian Christians stood guard over praying Muslims on Cairo in the Arab spring, Morocco welcomes Jews to their pilgrims sites. In London a synagogue welcomed Somalis to pray in their synagogue when their mosque was burnt down by the far right. Love has no religion, religion is love.

Iraq as a society is pretty much the same as it was almost 100 years ago. Jews if they hold an Israeli citizenship to my understanding are not even allowed to enter to Iraq.

As an iraqi jew, thank you for this video! My grandmother was like a second mother to me and passed away when i was pretty young. We didn't really have the chance to talk about her terrible past. My family filled me in as I grew older, but I wish I could hear it from her.

What the Jews of Europe and Muslims countries have been through.Not many know that the Jews of Muslim countries where mistreated and persecuted as badly as European Jews. We're iraqi jews, who came to Israel and then moved to London. My father, at his restaurant, met some iraqi Muslims who told him that the economy of iraq and general state, suffered greatly after the jews left.

I love this, especially the idea of the "full circle"! My bar mitzvah haftarah was from when Jewish nobles were taken to Babylon, where many of them eventually flourished. Through the prophet Jeremiah, Hashem told the Jews to "stay, plant gardens, build homes, marry off their children, and seek the prosperity of the city," which Jews took to heart. But thousands of years later, their descendants would return to Eretz Israel.

My ancestors come from a village that was predominantly Yezidi and Jewish and also had some Arab shepherds. The Yezidis eventually converted to Islam, but it was recent because if you look at the graves of my ancestors a couple generations back their tombstones are decorated in Yezidi rocks, and some Jews converted to Islam as well, one is my great-great- grandmother who's story is well-known in our village. The rest fled to Israel at the beginning of Saddam's reign and some still come back to visit the Northern (Kurdish) part of Iraq. Saddam had his eyes set on the Jews initially before moving on to other minorities, but he targeted everybody else as well. It was a very depressing situation. The war was pure evil and its effects still linger in the form of generational trauma, I can see it in my family members, it is like an invisible disease. My grandpa was a military man who helped lots of Jews move safely to Israel, he was also the guy to light their oil lamps on Saturdays I believe. The Jewish people had to flee almost overnight, they ended up selling their properties, possessions, and homes for very little because their departure was so sudden. Lots of people bought their homes from them for cheap, but my granddad didn't as he thought it was unethical to buy property that one sells you due to urgency. Maybe there was a hope that this threat would only be temporary? Who knows what the mindset of the people in that chaotic time was? If you look at the historical sites in the country there are some ruins of old castles that belonged to Jewish nobility. I think there is potential for the Kurds to do well and do great things with the bit of autonomy they currently have, but at the moment that's all it is unfortunately, potential. Nothing more. People like to eat during periods of summer, but when winter comes... let's hope it won't come anytime soon. I've since converted from Islam to Christianity and hope it makes a revival in the Middle East. I think the teachings of Christ, especially his message about love, is what the Middle East desperately needs. Love is more powerful than any other force I know.
