What Happened to Henry's Hamburgers?

Today in Episode 3, we are taking a closer look at another fast food burger chain that has largely faded into a distant memory. At one point, Henry’s Hamburgers had over 200 locations at its peak in the mid-60s, which was right inline with McDonald’s at the time! So what did happen to Henry’s and what kept it from leading the pack? We’ll try to answer those questions today as we revisit Henry’s beginnings, its rapid expansion, and subsequent decline, leaving only a sole survivor in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

One of the reasons that Henry's went down was that my father who opened up 160 stores in the Midwest in the 1950s left the company because his brothers didn't want to train the franchisees. My father was Charles Bresler.

. Dad was a city fireman who did yard work to help pay the bills, and I used to go with him, to say we were economically challenged would have been a understatement. The big part of my day was when we would pull into Henry's, some days we would each get a burger others we would split one, the same with a coke. Then Burger Chef moved in next door, our economic status had gotten better and Henry's closed their doors.

The Henry's at Foster/Western in Chicago used to mail coupon books with 2 months of weekly deals. Always looked forward to Shrimp Boat week. Front window was lined with counter seating to eat & watch buses/traffic go by... 10yrs was old enough for a kid to wander the city back then. And there was always a giant Breslers billboard nearby.

In St. Joseph Mo , in the 70s when I was a teen , we had three Henry’s - terrific food ! You could get a “family” order of fries - came in a brown bag , like you’d take your lunch in - for $1.00 ! Great fries too ! When Henry’s closed here in town , Ford’s took over all three locations - keeping the same menu , like the All American burger , etc. - they were good - just not Henry’s ! Today , there’s one Ford’s still open , in the south end . I go there every now & then still !

Just last Labor Day weekend, I took a Route 66 jaunt from Chicago and just west of the city, I swear I saw a Henry's. Are you sure the one in MI is the last one? Also used to have Dog N Suds in Kankakee. A couple years back I stumbled onto a Dog N Suds in Tomahawk, WI. Growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, we had Clarks Submarine Sandwich franchises. I have never found a sub anywhere that even comes close. The closest sub is Jersey Mikes Italian - Mikes way. Bit it still does not match a Clarks. I always wondered why they went belly up. I found some forums dedicated to them and even found the city plattes for their various locations but no word on what happened to the or why they were so good. I do know the meats they sourced are different these days so that may be something that can never be duplicated.

  • @peterm.fitzpatrick7735

    @peterm.fitzpatrick7735

    4 жыл бұрын

@@restaurantrewind9026 Yes, read my post on the Sandy's video. I had my first fast-food hamburger at the Sheridan location when I was around four or five, being driven there with my two brothers by my parents. We ate there fairly often while I grew up. Or up to when I was around ten or so, I don't remember going there much after that. It changed after Mr. Lundgren retired and after Mcdonald's unleashed their TV advertising campaign that brainwashed a whole generation of kids to clamor for the golden arches, Sandy's found itself floundering and had to sell out to Hardee's corp. If you watch the Sandy's video in this series, you can track that trajectory, with the Sandy's Sheridan location shown changing its signage to Hardee's in 1973. I am almost completely certain that there was never a Henry's located in the Peoria area. I grew up there and after my driver's license, believe me, my buddies and I scoped out every inch of that not too large city. We did have Sandy's, Mcdonald's, Burger King, Shakey's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Lums, even a Dog and Suds one time, a Minnie Pearl Chicken building that went up without ever opening and then disappearing, Arthur Treacher's, and even a short-lived Farrell's Ice Cream in the first mall to open there. The Henry's video completely bemused me. I have never seen one in my life! And they were in Illinois.

Well, there was the one I worked at. And we used to cruise out to the one in Ann Arbor. So those two I know existed. There was supposedly one on the west side of Michigan somewhere. Our boss told us it was a chain though. Can't remember if he ever mentioned any other locations. I do remember that the "S" stood for smiling, speedy, service. We had a good menu. We had a specialty I've never seen anywhere else. It was a kielbasa sandwich. A 12 inch kielbasa scored along the top, deep fried, served on a sub bun. When an order would come through for one with mustard, chili, and onions. We'd call out "one battleship all the way". Sure had some fun times working there. I am curious as to how many locations there actually were myself. Definitely enjoy your posts!

Henry's was good. There was one in Newton Ia. and I remember eating at the one in Cedar Falls Ia. on University Ave. I don't remember them after about 1980

There was one in Wheeling, IL. Every year, my grade school would get lunch from Henry's. Then they were gone. Then I read that they were using horse meat. Then I was kind of glad they were gone. But I still miss the shakes!. Please don't tell me they used dog milk!!

In 2021 you can get a regular brown bag meal for $7.25. The burger, drink, and fry is not that big, but enough to fill the average person up.

Funny you said that Benton Harbor still does 50% of their daily sales with the Brown Bag Special, The Brown Bag Special A Double Cheeseburger, order of Fries, and a drink of your choice, all at a special price! That's what the McDonald's brothers figured out when they closed their BBQ restaurant and re-invented fast food. The more things change.....

I hadn't heard the horse-meat rumor, but in the late 60's in eastern Indiana, a rumor that Henry's was adding ground-up earthworms to their hamburgers certainly didn't help sales.

It was very convenient for entertainment purposes bcuz next door was the Drive-In Theater. Thanks 😊

Too bad it didn't last. This looks like the best architecture for fast food. If the same building was avaliable fully enclosed, and if it was offered with a peaked roof that could either be a full drive in, or full sized, then they could have focused on efficiently producing pre fabricated and expandable buildings for franchisees.

I live three miles from the last Henry's. Still prefer Neon Grill in St. Joseph. Shame Roxy's could not keep their doors open. They failed to advertise after renovations and taking all the 50's nostalgia out (lives on as a crappy yoga place).

Although Henry's was long gone by the time I arrived on Earth, we had many of the old larger god damn buildings in the region that had become real turd packers. The angled glass windows that you always hit your head on, globe freaking light fixtures, and brown crappy wood interiors. I remember the nasty shit like it was yesterday. Thanks for making me throw up.
