If I’m being completely honest, there’s no way GFriend decided to leave Source for no reason. Without GFriend, Source would’ve gone completely bankrupt. For me the mystery behind GFriend’s disbandment is something I would truly like to explore but yet we will never really get to know the truth unless GFriend or Source speaks up about it. Some believe that Source is focusing too much on the upcoming girl group and ignoring GFriend. I definitely feel like something happened behind the scenes between GFriend and Source that caused this disbandment. The girls love working together so they wouldn’t just leave unless something happened and that unknown thing that happened could be the cause of why GFriend disbanded. Also, why would Source choose to trademark “GFriend” when they were going to disband? Are they trying to keep GFriend to themselves? It all just seems fishy to me.

the reason is HYBE acquire source music, "HYBE" wants new GG, so Gfriend disbanded. Like 2ne1, F(x) etc.

If they were preparing a comeback for August and suddenly disband, it means that it's gfriend who didn't resign the contract. Soumu wouldn't spend money to prepare a comeback if they already know they will make them disband. I think that it's the conditions of the contract which made gfriend not resign it, maybe because they wouldn't be paid enough, be overworked, doing concept they don't like or something like that. And maybe gfriend were planning to sign together with another agency which would give them better contract conditions, that might be why soumu rushed to trademark the name of gfriend (sorry for my bad english)

If one or two members stayed with Source after the contract ended, then maybe fans wouldn't be so suspicious of the company. But all 6 of them left, which makes it seem like something truly terrible happened between the company and the girls which caused them to disband last minute. The girls hinted at a comeback this year so to all of a sudden disband is so strange, especially at the peak of their popularity? When they released their letters, it seemed like they also found out about the disbandment like a few hours ago. I just hope the girls remain happy and successful in whatever they choose to do next.

Izone is ok. Since we knew when they'll disband and we had LOT'S of time to realise and practice to deal with the disbandment. But incase of GFriend. It was very random. They had ONE more year left. But they suddenly disbanded. And they were So successful. So it was very random for a not so old, succesful girl group to disband.

Something doesn’t sit right with this disbandment. I know many things can be unknown. But from what we could see: the girls got along and we’re happy, their staff enjoyed working with them, the ceo was still supporting them, their fans still love them (and if anything the fan base has only gotten bigger). So what went wrong?!? So much we want to know but may never find out.

But Gfriend debuted pretty young. All of the members are at their early 20s. With the return of 2nd gen kpop groups. I don't think 3rd gen would be disappearing anytime soon. Most of them are still at their peak of their popularity. Gfriend must have had a serious issue with SouMu/HYBE.

I supported Gfriend since their debut. The first time I saw them was on Weekly Idol’s chuseok special, the episode that invented 2x speed dance - Gfriend did it as a request from a fan. To be honest the news really schocked me, knowing how much work they put into their latest albums, it really came out of nowhere. However, since they didn’t officially disbanded, just left their company, I still hold a piece of hope that we will see them as a group in the future.

To see how many records they broke and how many times they constantly raised the bars for themselves, their success seemed immeasurable. I find it hard to accept that they’re done. I’ll support all the members but do hope for a possible reunion or redebut.

The news of their disbandment is shocking but I believe SOMO had to scramble to issue that announcement. The news of GFRIEND's disbandment was reported in the news (perhaps leaked). Truly a sad and undignified ending to one of my ult groups. But I believe they will rise like the Phoenix. We haven't seen the last of the girls.

I truly am proud to be a fan of theirs. To see how much success they’ve had and seeing all the bars they’ve set, it truly makes me so proud of them. The news still is a shock to me and I have trouble accepting that this really happened. I will continue to support each member individually and hope for the best and a possible reunion and redebut.

If they’re anything like me, it could be the label being acquired by another label thing. I used to work for Whole Foods when it was independently owned. Once they got bought by Amazon, everything changed and it was hell. So, I resigned. Maybe BigHit/HYBE buying out Source created a similar situation. But, unlike me, GFriend had contracts to fulfill and needed to stay for the rest of the duration of said contracts. So yeah, maybe this has been brewing under the surface for a while and we just never knew.

We'll never know the true reason behind their disbandment. You would think that going under HYBE would mean greater opportunities for the group. The CEO and staff seemed nice to them (heck the CEO sold his house for the group to debut in the first place). Source Music was under a huge debt this year, with losses this year despite GFriend's activities in 2020. They also took out a huge loan from HYBE so maybe it could be financial reasons? It's also strange all 6 decided to leave, and it was so sudden with schedules and KZread content scheduled for release at the time, then completely wiped out after their leaving announcement. I wanna have a glimmer of hope that it'll end up like the Highlight/Beast situation but only time will tell.

I didn't know that SoMu have huge debt. Maybe thats why they are pressured by "someone" to "let go" of these girls though it seems weird that they didn't give up that trademark of GFriend to the girls. Because when Banana Culture goes bankrupt, EXID members can still promote under the group name even without their previous company.

They were revolutionary,one of the most iconic and succesful girl groups,but sadly they disbanded. I hope they have the chance to perform together again

'No one has done it like them' YES. NO ONE. I couldnt find any gg who struggled, hardworking and successful as much as gfriend. From a tiny lil company to be able to stand along with other big3 gg. And their hardwork and humbleness really shown. I miss them.

This makes me want to cry. They are one of the best K-Pop groups of ALL TIME. Thanks for the video Nathan, now I need to go get another box of tissues. "No one has done it like them or probably ever will... and that's what makes GFRIEND, irreplaceable." 😭😭😭

I'm always surprised when people talk about this stage in a video but no one mentions the bugs. Not only were they being poured on and slipping on a wet stage, they were being swarmed by dozens of giant moths. Truly a nightmare 😰

I still can’t believe what happened to them. Since the girls are so close i really think and hope that they will come back at some point. They are still so successful this cannot stop like that

Prior to their disbandment, Yuju, if you notice, most of the time she is so out of it.. she sometimes give off the " I dont want to be here" vibe most of the time.. she even cry and say she is too tired.. I believe the girls are being over worked, maybe to bring in more money for the new group ir something.. also, they may have been transfered to a different managing team after the merge that made the girls feel so not at home anymore. If they left to get some rest, I'm okay with it but if SouMu forced them to leave, I will be mad at the company!! I believe none of the girls want the disbandment. Their friendship is genuine to the core.

The reason behind the contract renewal fail was because the company put the debt they have to pay back on the girls so my guess is because of how overworked they have been they didn't want to deal with it anymore because they were tired of how the company overworked them.

Even though the odds were stacked against them, they continued to find success and constantly raise the bar higher and higher. Thank you GFriend.

I'm an Asian Buddy and I am so so so happy seeing English contents about this incident. We cried for GFRIEND disbanded and we were so angry with their agency. But we felt comforted when we read and watch videos/articles like this. Thanks.

Almost 2 years since their disbandment and we still don't know why, but the girls made it to have a bright future and a good career. I will love them forever and I know they will meet again in the future ❤️

The important thing for me right now is that the girls are genuinely happy and much free than before. They can do now anything that their agency limited or prohibited them before. I wish and pray that their success will soar higher more than ever. A HOPEFUL PATH OF CAREER WILL LEAD THEIR WAY SOONER OR LATER.

I hoped you would talk about this. I wanted to know your thoughts but it seems your just as confused as the rest of us. I’ve been through my fair share of disbandments but this one has hit me the hardest. They were my ult group and they meant a lot to me. But I think the reason it’s hit me and the rest of buddy so hard is because it is so sudden and so mysterious. They were on the top of their game and now they’re just gone with no real explanation. The members and source have all addressed that everything has been sudden but with no real explanation as to why. It makes everything hurt even worse than it already would have.

The thing about gfriend 's disbandment is how shocking and fast it went , and how their company handled it ( they didn't give them the chance to say goodbye ) . Considering that gfriend built that company!! The girls are still friends and on good terms sharing insta stories together so it definitely was from hybe & source music. They either forced them to disband or gave them some fucked up contracts and they had no chance but to decline it . After all they left as 6 . I hope they sign with another agency and if not I wish them the best for whatever path they choose .

Literally the only group that left sm was shinwha as whole and the reason was sm decided to sign 5 members but not 6th member so all left and shinwha are in 21st career, the longest lasting group. So the thing that came into my mind is maybe they hybe/ soumu did something like that. The contract might be too much or something like they want to sign some members but not all so they decided to leave the company together.

I wish dispatch will spill the problem of this , I strongy believe gfriend still want to be in group since they always dreamed to be a longlast group rather than being populer , and they hinted to comeback :( and also the members already change their hairstyle , and this happened:(

A lot of people think former big hit now hybe were being so considerate for helping these “failing” “broke” companies but bighit acquiring those companies was simply business and bighit gets money from these companies, it’s not a damn charity it’s “✨business✨ and what leads business ✨money✨. They were also at a cafe which is a strange place to have a n*zi statue in the first place but anyways I don’t think they recognised the swastika at all either, it was just pure ignorance and many people on weverse in both english and korean were calling out and correcting her mistake (she uploaded the pics on both ig and weverse) and she hasn’t repeated it so she has had growth from the situation again they are not n*zi’s or hitler worshippers. I don’t want to argue or make you feel invalid if you are jewish and offended at her scandal at all it I completely understandable if you don’t like her or the members you have a valid reason to dislike them, I just wanted to clear up some misinformation !

@Gigi Herrier bring back any money? dude, it's the female kpop group with the most wins ever, not counting the big 3. more than blackpink, more than a lot of groups. In addition, they exceed sales records on their albums. it is always the less well-informed who speak the most. Anyway the generations of now are all shit. Now it's just beautiful man or beautiful woman for teenagers in hormone crisis without any talent. Good bands are becoming increasingly rare. And because of this shitty agency, we lost this kind of unique band that only comes out once a year.

Gfriend choreography synchronization is the best in kpop, i challenge anyone that can prove otherwise.

I remember being so shocked when I first heard the news, because they’re doing so well. I’ve been a Buddy since 2016, and I remember silently crying on the inside when I found out about their disbandment. I was really suspicious on the disbandment as the members themselves announced it before SouMu. Plus they were going to have a comeback in June which was more confusing. It was so sudden and out of nowhere, even Umji did a Vlive and didn’t mention anything about it. I really want SouMu to give the fans a PROPER explanation and the TRUE reason why they disbanded, because it something Gfriend wouldn’t do, knowing the members well enough. I hate it that SouMu left Buddys in the dust like that. Even if they did it because a new gg is coming, it still wouldn’t make sense from a logical and business stand point. Why would you get rid of your ONLY money maker of your company? It doesn’t add up. If the members indeed wanted to split ways, it doesn’t seem right either because if so they wouldn’t have written the letters so early and post it BEFORE their contract expiry date. SOUMU WE NEED EXPLANATIONS!!

I have actually become aware of Gfriend in recent months.I love them for Apple and Mago Mago, and you video encourages me to look into them more! But it is a real shame they have disbanded. Maybe someday someone will tell us why. You do great videos! Thankyou!

gfriends disbandment still makes no sense to me and remains such a mystery....I've been a buddy since 2017 and I always thought gfriend would be one of those groups that would last a really long time, similarly to apink and how they're still a group after 10 years. it doesn't really surprise me that all the members left at the same time since they probably didn't wanna leave anybody behind, but that fact is also what confuses me the most. I know something big must've happened behind the scenes in order for all the members to randomly decide to leave at once... I honestly thought they were gonna have a comeback soon since mago came out a while ago, so the whole situation just doesn't make any sense and ill always wanna know what exactly happened. I hope the girls all do well with whatever their future paths may be, and I will forever support them.

Sunrise is still my favorite kpop song I've ever heard. It's catchy, meaningful, has amazing composition and the members harmonize so beautifully. It's the gold standard for a pop ballad.

gfriend have some of the best title tracks in kpop. they are consistently good.

This disbanding has caused a great disturbance in the kpop universe....

I'm sad Gfriend disbanded. They got me back into liking kpop again in 2017.

I usually don't get teary eyed when it comes to disbandment news, but this one just hits a huge nerve. They were the first Kpop group I had a chance to see live. I hope we get to hear new music from them again.

It was really saddening that when I started hyping with GFRIEND, out of nowhere they announced their disbandment. I really like them QUEENS OF SYNCHRONIZATION alongside SEVENTEEN as KINGS OF SYNCHRONIZATION.

I’m not even that big of a fan of GFRIEND, even I can tell the level of work and dedication they put into each and every one of their performances.

Even today, the members still love and support their time as GFriend. Yuju even said that for her first album, she didn’t give her fandom a name because she wanted to have them be Buddy for just a little longer. The members still posted pics on GFriend’s debut anniversary. And considering that they were going to have a comeback in May, something fishy is definitely going on.

The reason is the ugly truth of Kpop. Kpop companies pay members almost nothing throughout most of their career. If they do start to make any money it’s only towards the end, if they are lucky. The so-called 7 year curse, isn’t a curse, it’s a business strategy. At the end of the contract, singers can renegotiate for REAL money and inevitably it’s cheaper for companies to exploit a brand new group than pay the established group. Sadly, singers often will make more money if they don’t re-sign and take whatever other jobs, often in acting, they can do on their own. This is what happens with almost every Kpop group. There is no mystery.

Everyone was shock when soumu announced the termination of contract. It was so sudden and vague, the reason why the whole fandom was enraged. Seriously, it was out of context. And the fact that umji was doing a vlive few hours before announcement was already very suspicious. It seems like they didn't know it will be released abruptly. Also, there was no hint for disbandment. They had just got into hybe label and all their stuff were displayed on the new building's museum which was only opened few weeks before the announcement. So why would they put it all there only to disband 2 weeks after? It doesn't make sense at all. My instinct was telling me that there was something serious going on with the company leaving the girls no choice but to withdraw. It seems like the 6 of them were even forced to leave. One of the reason was because there was no member going solo or hinting for a solo debut anytime soon so it was really not the reason for the disbandment. Also, they had just starting to get recognized internationally with their song mago so that was really disappointing. I am so puzzled and heartbroken up to this day. I am a Buddy for years now and I know for a fact that they had to eventually stop promoting as a group but I didn't expect it to be this way. They had always been thankful to have great relationship with the staff and the company, and separation was so vivid. Howevee, with the current situation the admiration and respect for the company was also brought to trash. And I fully understand why. But then I am still giving them the benefit of the doubt. That they also didn't want to part ways with the girls. And actually I am convinced that it is now. The reason was because a financial statement for all the labels under hybe, released weeks ago, was stating that soumu was now in huge debt after the acquisition so I don't think they would easily let go of their only artists that was contributing to pay such debt. Moreover, people on the internet was stating that the news of disbandment was brought to the media even before the company announced it themselves which really backs up the fact that soumu wasn't really in control of the situation. The backlash that their getting was all valid however I believe it was not solely their fault, there is something bigger that we didn't know about. I just hope the girls were physically, mentally and emotionally stable right now. I'm still looking forward for their career. Oh and btw there was some light to this because they are now getting active on their personal social media account, specifically Instagram. Let's stay strong Buddies!

There is so much unknown and I feel like the disbandment will never be fully explained. I’m so sad to hear this news and still haven’t accepted the fact that they’re really disbanded.

You brought me back to my memory lane. It feels like, every moment of me growing up was flashed before my eyes upon watching their journey. I stanned them since debut and I'm still a proud Buddy.

Eventhough I'm really sad that they disbanded, I wish all members of Gfriend a fulfilling future career and that they'll be happy with the new path they take.

Mago is what brought me to GFriend. It was a huge bop. I never thought it would be the last tho.
