Hello! huge video, I know. But don't worry! I've included chapters so you can jump around! And yes, I'm sure I made plenty of mistakes over the course of this video, but it happens from time to time, oops! And I did try my best to incorporate conflicting timelines, like with Tegan. After all, Power of the Doctor never exactly said she DIDN'T fight Sontarans with the Sixth Doctor ;) www.patreon.com/harbowholmes

Just to be noted, Steven was not the longest running 1st doctor companion, in episodes, stories or indeed real life months. That honour is held with Ian & Barbara who have 77 episodes to Stevens 46. 16 stories to Stevens 11. And served on the show from November 1963-june 1965. While Steven only served from June 1965-june 1966.

I wondered when I heard that, I was like “I had no idea Steve served the longest!” of the 1st Doctor companions as I always thought it was Barbara and Ian! And it was. ;-) but despite the few minor inaccuracies it’s still a fantastic video, having all these departures and where they’ve been in one place, and a great start at such documentation as I’m sure others will run with it and make more of these with the EU, alt time lines, etc documented as well (already have a headache, LOL!). That’s assuming it hasn’t been done before and if it has apologies to whoever (or whomevers) did but regardless, this video is all kinds of companions awesome-sauce!!! Oh and I can’t remember if it was covered - did K9 get covered as the 4 (or 5 with the K9 series) units he actually was? Actually I think he did, couldn’ recallfor sure, was hoping the tin dog would be at the Companions meeting with Luke Smith! And with River Song! I think a K9 should be the de facto parting gift for every companion of the Doctor, LOL! Seriously tho I was really hoping to see the cute little tin mutt during the Special, here’s hoping he’ll definitely make a reappearance for the 60th…and beyond! He’s the one companion that won’t visibly age (unless wanted for the story w/ rust, chips, etc) and should always be with the Doctor either in the innards of the TARDIS occasionally popping out for an adventure here and there when a dog is needed! :-) he needs to come back and with the passing of Bob Baker surely an arrangement could be made now for more permanent appearances for K9 on the main series (imagine him with Ncuti! Awesome!) and if not then Definitely on the upcoming spin off series, whatever they may be!

Exactly. Even when ignoring the sometimes overly complex narratives of companions like Hex, looking simply at Charlie alone is enough to make one realize just how much more freedom expanded media has that complex continuities that the show doesn't have. To have a series of monthly plays come out featuring either the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th Doctors- To have Charlie travel with the 8th Doctor for so many releases, only to them depart and then go travel with the 6th Doctor is something the show wouldn't be able to do without wildly changing the flow of what they do.

Susanne's departure in a future earth that never existed shows that the doctor causes time splinters all over the place and therefore there are versions of him that never died, which is why you get to see old incarnations all the time. @@sanddagger36 Leaving aside for the moment Day of the Daleks in which the events of DIE get overridden by a bigger longer Dalek occupation, there is no evidence that three years of Dalek occupation of Earth did not become a fixed point in time. In fact it gets mentioned in several other stories as though the Dalek occupation IS a fixed point. In the Dalek Master Plan the Doctor tells Bret Vyon to tell the leaders of Earth to look up the history of the 2160s - "History will show how to deal with them (the Daleks)" 23 years later in Remembrance of the Daleks, the Doctor and Ace are in 1963 and Ace asks if the Daleks just want to conquer the Earth. The Doctor replies "Nothing so mundane. They conquered the Earth in the twenty-second century. No, they want the Hand of Omega" so clearly he recognises that for the Daleks, conquest of the Earth was something for another time. In Day of the Daleks, the Gold Dalek says "The Daleks have discovered the secret of time travel. We have invaded Earth AGAIN. We have changed the pattern of history." Notice the word AGAIN - referencing the original Dalek Invasion of Earth.

So, does that mean that when 12 saw Clara, Bill and Nardole before he regenerated they were all technically dead at that point in time, or did they die in the future and Testimony was able to recreate them in the present from its records? Just like everything else in Doctor Who it's all timey whimey and a little hard to follow. I would have thought Clara would have still been alive at that point and still traveling around the Universe 🌌 in her Tardis. I wish the Doctor could be there for her when she has to go back to Trap Street and reassure her before she has to die again. I do like that you refer to her as his platonic soul mate, that's exactly what they were to each other. 💕

Doctor meets all of them during First War - as that was where his adventure with First Doctor ended. Testimony can time travel. Also we have seen Clara's death. Her facing Raven was a fixed point in time, as it already has happened. Her existence before that, between one heartbeat and the other was a (non) life on borrowed time - and it only could happen, because her death pushed Doctor to action. She has to face the Raven - because we know she already did.

As someone who never watched the OG Doctor Who and I'll be blunt I have little interest in doing so mostly due to the visuals during that time period. I really appreciate learning about all these companions in the past and all these previous interactions from doctor to doctor. Thank you for making this video.

I know the visuals can take some time to get used to and are far from the visuals we have today but I encourage you to put the visuals aside and watch OG Doctor Who or "Classic Who" as it has become known as. There are some great stories there to be enjoyed. Yes there are some challenges along the way like the missing stories or at least missing parts of stories and some stories that are a bit sub standard but we get that with New Who too. I will say most stories are good and it's great to see what came before 2005. So if I have convinced you to give it ago I recommend you start at the beginning with "An Unearthly Child"

I say, get over it. Excepting a truly breakthrough new technique, CG has done that at this point. and has for the past 2 decades Pretty much Tom Baker and prior, outside of a few camera tricks, there was no such thing as CG. Once you look beyond that, there were some pretty good stories, not to mention some of their visuals, "They really did that with Bubble Wrap and green JellO??!?" The many times I've seen extruded aluminum dryer vent hose.... I think the props department kept it in stock LOL People worked with what they had at the time I remember when Doctor 1 and crew brought a plague of the common cold that wiped out half a space station

Such a great and comprehensive video, thanks for putting this together. I have a pretty good handle on expanded media, but I still learned a few new things from this video. So many companions have a tangled Web of potential timelines across different media, so it's really helpful to see it all layed out in front of me. I'd definitely like to see more of these lore type videos. I think it would be too much of a nightmare to cover EVERY companion from expanded media, but if you're brave enough, maybe you could have a go at covering some of the most notable players from across the VNA/EDAs, DWM and Big Finish? (Maybe the IDW and Titan comics too?) Another interesting topic, if you're up to the task, could be trying to sort out the timelines of different enemies, working out the chronological order of their appearances and whatnot.

Peri Brown really was tossed about a lot by the writers. I felt like in a lot of cases it was a personal challenge to see how much each writer could hurt her. She also started the show in Planet of Fire immediately drowning in the water for no reason and being tormented by the Master. Her second story also had her being pursued by a dude who wanted to do unmentionable things to her. The final ending is better, but it sure took a while to get there. Also, poor Dodo Chaplet. She was basically in the same boat with her being constantly tormented by the writers.

The period during Six was a hot mess because the head of the BBC absolutely LOATHED Doctor Who (personal issues I guess?) so they ended up having some really messed up mandates placed on the show that resulted in all the jankiness. IIRC most of the series was based on Gallifrey with the Doctor being put on trial by the Valleyard because their budget had been destroyed. I’d love to see a remake/do-over with Six and Peri where they get to be normal (as normal as the Doctor can be at least) because they both got shafted. ☹️ Dodo’s first biography sounds like some really angry fanfic where the author just wanted to torture her. That was horrifying and I’m glad they retconned it.

I was getting confused, having just watched WHO over the decades on PBS from Buffalo, TVO from Toronto. Broadcast of the adventures was sketchy at best, the CBC broadcast the first season with Chris E. but then it moved back over onto Pay-TV. Yet by that time I had learned to use file sharing, torrents, transloaders and *Debrid sites whenever new episodes were available. So the reason, you all say, for my gaps in not knowing was there were extended media, like comics/graphic novels and the like, so that explains it. THANK YOU

The next episode when he clearly was gone was hard to get as a kid. But it's nice to have the good guys die, from time to time, to create tension for the Doctor and crew. Like when K9 died after the doctor accidentally left a chocolate candy bar on the floor. (Could have happened)

This is the same guy whose first doctor who novel was essentially a softcore porn and featured the doctor defending sexual assault when his companion expressed how disgusted she was after seeing some guy do it. Yeah, let's just say he's not the most popular wilderness years writer. I'm baffled how he was ever asked back given litteally none of his dr who novels have been received with any sort of warmth by fans. 33:57, was going to object to calling turlough forgettable... then I remembered that he totally was outside of his first and last stories, and it's only thanks to big finish that I think much more positively of him. I still maintain he was an incredibly interesting character when the writers actually remembered to do things with him, but unfortunately that wasn't often.

@@bl8388 yes, they were five ½ hour episodes at 5.30pm. A staple after school and before the 6 o'clock news. They were interesting and drawn out stories, a bit like Test cricket! I saw re-runs when I was little, as we were a few years behind the UK, so I grew up with John Pertwee and Tom Baker, before it started to get weird with Peter Davison, although even Baker started before I was born, which is how I know they were re-runs. The current trend of one or two episodes is hard to take and there are so many twists. There are some ridiculously overcomplicated plotlines and a lot to do with time distortions, where we really just want them to get on with it. I catch it late at night when off work, as their ratings have damned them to the wee hours.
