Kickers aren't drafted early because they aren't drafted early. Sounds stupid, but teams seem to have agreed not to draft these positions early, so it's unwise to spend a first or second round pick on a player that would likely still be available in later rounds. Drafting doesn't happen in a vacuum, and since there are more contested positions teams go for those instead. But in terms of value compared to draft position I agree, kickers are drafted way too late.

I don't know if ANY kicker is worth a first rounder but if people think a kicker is worth a first rounder than Janikowski belongs in the discussion, one of the best kickers in history imo him and Vinatieri were the only 2 kickers I paid any attention to growing up watching football, Vinatieri because he won so many playoff/super bowl games with his leg and because he played for my team the colts and Janikowski because no matter where he was kicking from you always felt as tho it had a good chance of going in and more often than not his kicks were coming from at least 40+ yards out, it was always entertaining to watch him try and kick it from distances that would be laughed at if anyone but him were kicking it and a good portion of the time they'd go in and you'd just shake your head knowing that the fact they even had him attempt it was ridiculous but damned if he didn't make just as many as he missed 😂

tbh I’ve never thought of Janikowski as someone not worthy of first round pick. In Poland he had a kind of a cult status (when he was active) and I’ve heard opinions of him being atg and even named K version of Tom Brady. Another great video!

And now the two best kickers in the league, Tucker and Boswell, were both undrafted. With Tucker probably being the best ever. Granted it still wouldn't make sense to draft someone like Tucker in the first round, but once you get to rounds 5-7, if there is a possibility of a K/P being amazing, it's well worth the pick imo. An average kicker is worth more than some rotational player you might get in rounds 5-7.

That Justin Tucker field goal still bothers me because on the previous play there was a blatant delay of game that was missed. This wasn't even a a case where the ball was snapped right after the clock hit zero, but when you actually look at the film where the play clock is visible you can see it hit zero for over a second before the center even starts moving. I have tremendous respect for Tucker and what he can do, but had the referees done their job correctly, that kick likely wouldn't have even been attempted.

There was a third kicker in the SWC that should be mentioned in the Erxleben, Steve Little story and that’s Tony Franklin. All three kickers were hitting 60+ field goals in college. What was also failed to mention is that college kickers were kicking field goals off tees. Franklin was the only one of the three that made the adjustment in the pros.

Say what you will about Al Davis, he got the kickers correct. Ray guy was up for Hall of Fame consideration multiple years. He's considered to be one of the greatest punters ever. Sebastian janikowski have one of the strongest legs of all time. His accuracy wasn't that bad, and his team really needed a good kicker when he was drafted. I can see Al Davis's thinking there.
