What Happened To '90s R&B Group Silk? | Issues With Keith Sweat, Money, Brandy's Mom Saved The Day?

They may have grown up singing gospel tunes in church but, it would be a song about wanting to get freaky with a woman that would take this group to the top of the music charts. R&B group Silk, originally consisting of Timothy "Timzo" Cameron, James "Jimmy" Gates, Jr., Johnathen "John John" Rasboro, Tyga Graham and Albert Allen, came together in Atlanta, Georgia in the late ‘80s. Like so many soulful groups before them, the quintet honed their singing skills as choir boys in church. At one point, cousins Timzo and Jimmy started their own little gospel group. Also, like many other artists mainly surrounded by gospel, the cousins found other ways to get their fix of secular music like The Temptations, LeVert, New Edition and Keith Sweat. Keith would actually later play a major role in Silk’s career accomplishments as well as, according to the group, some disappointments.

Not enough respect is put on their name!! Lil G voice is incredible one of the best male singers PERIODTT!! John John falsetto is amazing n them harmonies are one of a kind !!! Always live singing till this day n still sound incredible true legends no doubt about it!!!

Their group is very rare in sense that they didn’t have any members coming and going or any going solo. That’s great.

30 years went by fast..I was 17 on 92 when they came out..I'm 47 now.
Had a road trip home last night and made a list of songs that played constantly during the quiet storm back in the day and, "Lose control" was absolutely at the top of that list... These dudes are from that r&b that is MISSING... They've made songs specifically for being intimate lol that will last forever... They deserve all their flowers 💐💐💐💐💐💐

The video for the Silk's Freak Me was on heavy rotation on BET, MTV, VH1 and The Box
Silk also appeared on Moesha in 1999 and they sung the song Please Don't Go
Fun Fact, two of the members were in Tyler Perrys original Madea Plays! I knew those faces looked familiar

It's good to know that groups like Silk are STILL around! The first song I've heard from them is "Happy Days". Then " Freak me" after. I have their first album. I also like the "Tonight (99)" album! The 80's and all throughout the 90's had competition in the rnb space! Silk, Jodeci, Shai, I.N.T.R.O(Innovative, new, talent, reaching, out), Az Yet, Boyz 2 Men, High 5, H-Town...etc!Groups like these made rnb enjoyable to listen to! Glad that this update came out👍!
Silk was one of my favorite groups in the 90's.
Just seen them in concert back in June ! They sounded amazing .
So many RnB groups to talk about like Subway, Intro, After 7 and so on. Great time to be young and listening to real music.
LGTTR never fails with these videos. Silk was another group responsible for pregnancies in the 90s and early 2000s. Shoot, their hits still responsible for making days till this day 🤣

I saw Keith sweat, along with silk a couple of years ago. That concert was amazing. Everyone still sounds so good
If you,Happy Days, I can go deeper,freak me, etc..They had pure hits..Glad to hear that they are still performing and in good health

Silk is a phenomenal R&B group. I saw them in concert at Island Park in Dayton, Ohio in August 2001. They were simply marvelous.

Silk was the SHEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIT back in the day and still is to most of us. Once again, I spoke on that church sound...its very distinct. It gets me every time. I think they outshine the music that accompanies them. It takes time to blend voices like them. Not surprised about anything that happened to them. It's a group curse...stuff happens but they never talk on the what ifs from the start. Then when things do happen...FIX IT JESUS!!

Damn, they were and are so fine. So glad they’re still touring as a group. Agree with other comments, they’re underrated. I adore them.
One of Silk was so impressed he tried to get my sister to marry him for 5 years -- 5 LONG YEARS -- and always paid respects to my mother (which impressed me and my family) when he was in town seeing my sister. He even had Silk make a surprise appearance at our Family Gathering, and performed 3-4 songs acapella to impress my totally surprised sister and elders. My sister was fickle, knucklehead, gorgeous, and highly successful local concert/show promoter, but loved being independent more than marriage. 25yrs later she is alone, miserable, and has 2 cats.......

Silk is hands 🙌🏾 down one of my FAVORITE groups. I’ve seen them in concert 3 times and they NEVER disappoint. Loose Control that song is a constant on my play list. I love this story..

When I first heard "If You" I thought it was one of the most mysteriously beautiful songs I'd ever heard. When they released the "Tonight" album they were just rebounding after their disappointing sophomore album. Lil G should've tried to build on that momentum with a fourth Silk album instead of trying to leave the group. That reminds me of how TLC was just getting on their feet financially with "FanMail" and Left Eye wanted to go solo afterward. Going solo is all about timing and momentum. None of Silk had enough traction as individuals yet to be going solo. Just my opinion.

How was song "Meeting in my Bedroom" not mentioned!?! That song and music video from my teenage years was memorable. That music video was on BET a lot. I still love that song today and the song "Calling You" since I was in my teen years. And I only found out about song "I Can Go Deeper" a few years ago. I just saw Silk (and Joe) last night in ATL. The tall, slim dark skin one (Tim?) wasn't there. Silk did very good. I just wish they did more Silk songs instead of Prince (Purple Rain & Adore) and a couple of songs I never heard. Even someone in crowd were yelling "we want to hear Silk". They didn't sing "Dont Rush" and many others. However, their voices are still strong and very good. They still have it.
