WHAT HAPPENED AT THE CRUCIFIXION WHEN THE EARTHQUAKE SHOOK OPEN GRAVES IN MATTHEW 27?

Point-1: Jesus Showed Death Was Subdued
and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. (Matthew 27:52-53)
The sixth miracle at the crucifixion was closely related to the previous one, as the supernatural earthquake not only gave the world a foretaste of divine judgment but also caused many tombs to be opened.
The significant miracle of that event, however, was not the mere opening of tombs, as could occur during any earthquake. The great miracle was that many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After the veil of the Temple was torn in two and the earth around Jerusalem was violently shaken, the Lord selectively raised the bodies of certain believers who had died.
Matthew points out that many, but not all, bodies of the saints who had died were resurrected, making clear that this resurrection was divinely restricted to a limited number of believers. They had trusted in God during the time before and under the Old Covenant, and some of those bodies may have been in their graves many hundreds of years. When Jesus died, their spirits came from the abode of righteous spirits and were joined with their glorified bodies that came out of the graves. This was full and final resurrection and glorification, making this miracle another foretaste of God’s sovereign work during the end times, when “all the dead in Christ shall rise” (1 Thess. 4:16).
It is important to note that the phrase and coming out of the tombs should be followed by a period, indicating the close of the sentence. After His resurrection begins a new sentence and introduces a distinct truth, namely, that those select resurrected saints then entered the holy city and appeared to many.
Those saints did not appear in Jerusalem until after the Lord’s own resurrection, because He was divinely appointed to be “the first fruits of those who are asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). And just as Christ Himself appeared after His resurrection only to those who already believed in Him, it would also seem that the many to whom the resurrected saints appeared were all believers. We are not told what they said to their brethren in the holy city, but their appearance in bodily form not only testified to Christ’s resurrection but also to God’s promise to raise all those who put their trust in Christ (1 Cor. 15:22, 51-53).
Through those six miracles the Father was saying that the cross is the only hope for eternal life. When one’s sin is carried away by Christ’s atoning death, the wrath of God is appeased for that believer, and he is delivered from the death and condemnation that the Lord endured on his behalf. For those who believe in the Son, access to God is open wide, and they are assured of living in His eternal and indestructible kingdom in eternal and indestructible bodies.[1]

Pastor Chuck told her, this can be the greatest part of her ministry, start a prayer ministry and gather people to pray, because this world is getting ready for the final 7 years, and people need Jesus! Prayer is how revivals start!🙏🏽🙌🪔🔥🫀

I still have that mindset, but now since I realized my faith, I realized that I can't do it alone, in this world where the very ground was cursed, I need Jesus to guide me as I do anything. I believe Ron Wyatt (many don't like or trust his discoveries) did find the Ark of the Covenant. I believe this because of one great detail of his find. He located it as directly under the cross of Christ's crucifixion and that the final offering of the Blood of the Final Lamb Sacrifice seeped down a massive crack in the ground (from the quake) and deposited His blood upon the Mercy Seat!! This IS the way of our God.

Matthew 27:51-53 tells us what happened right after Jesus Christ died: "Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many." This resurrection of several believers was one of the phenomena accompanying the resurrection of Jesus Christ to underscore that monumental event. These saints came back to physical life. (In the Bible, the word saints means those who are sanctified or set apart as holy, meaning all of God's true followers.) We know from such scriptures as 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 that God has resurrected no one to eternal life as an immortal spirit yet-except Christ. For example, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 says: "For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." These references teach us that God will change the righteous dead along with living Christians to immortal beings when Jesus Christ returns. After God brought the people mentioned in Matthew 27:52-53 back to life, they undoubtedly went back to their homes, where many acquaintances saw them. It's hard to imagine how utterly startling such an experience would be for their relatives and friends! The Bible says nothing further about these people God resurrected at Christ's death, leaving us to conclude that they eventually died (again) and their families buried them (again). Along with all other saints who died, they await in their graves their resurrection to spirit life.

I never heard this in all the years of being in church. Most pastors don't get it, and it make so much sense, and even strengthens your faith, that we to will be resurrected, or raptured, which ever comes first, death or the rapture. @barryfroelich3526 There is a lot of research on the Shroud and the separate head or face covering that can be found on the internet. The Creed of the three liturgical churches, Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, states Jesus descended into the Graves or Hades. The Catholic theology explains He released the Just from the Graves. That is what is meant by the Communion of Saints. Catholic theology states two judgments. Immediate and then 'end times" (whatever that is supposed to mean). See Rev. Robert Spitzer, S.J. teaching and books on the Shroud and related theology.

God created the earthquake as Jesus side was pierced by the Roman Soldier . The Lord’s blood ran down between the huge stone that cracked from the earthquake. His blood flowed down. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb, who died for our sins. Jesus( Yeshua is his Hebrew name) was a stone mason or architect. God gives each of us gifts that he hopes we will use to help upon the world. Love and gratitude. Amen.

I'm wondering why the record says "many" who believed and not "all" who believed. On thinking on it, those raised were perhaps more recent so that they'd be known. They didn't have cameras back then. If Abraham were raised at that time, who would know him? But if "many" and not "all" had their graves opened and were then raised to walk around (3rd day) when Christ resurrected, what about those saints that were in the graves and not raised, and why? Is it possible that the translated "many" is inaccurate?

I hope someone reads this and can give me an answer. At time stamp 22:09 he had just spoken about people were crucified at eye level. Why then does it say in John 19:29 that they held the sponge on the hyssop branch and held it "up" to Jesus? If they were eye level they wouldn't have needed to hold it up. I'm sure there's a good answer. Pastor John is a wonderful teacher. We listen to him a lot.

The people who awoke from the dead (after the crucifixion) and went into the City lived again but died again as they are mortals. Death is a sleep until the resurrection to judgement at the return of Jesus Christ. Our only hope lies in a resurrection. The soul or spirit (breath) is not immortal.

The arc of the covenant fascinates me. It’s hard for me to accept it’s gone due to plundering, or that it was taken by another people because it’s established as having such a powerful and meaning. I suppose God could have intended it to be temporary. Also God disciplined his people when they need it. Maybe God allowed it to be taken. I think if it is still in Israel it may never be found because God doesn’t want people worshiping idols and or things? Then again… what a verifying find that would be. It would prove and verify much. Archeology just keeps verifying the Bible.

Jesus said destroy this Temple and I will raise it up in 3 days. The harvest of the the Temple---the Body of Christ---will happen in 3 days---3 different times. Christ, the Firstfruits and those that are at His coming. There are 3 different parts of the harvest as described in the harvest of Israel. The firstfruits of the harvest was symbolic of Jesus and the firstfruits that happened on Resurrection Sunday. The main harvest was later---symbolic of the Rapture of the Church and finally the harvest of the corners of the fields----those that go through the Tribulation and are saved. Three different days. The three stages are explained in the harvest models in the Old Testament. Amazing when you think about it!

Feast Days The plan of God to put things back as He created them is foretold in the 7 Feast Days in Leviticus 23:4 ‘These are the feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. The first 3 Feast Days were completed by Christ when He walked and had fellowship with mankind and all of them were completed at their appointed time. Christ initiated the 4th Feast Day 50 days after His resurrection, and it has yet to be completed but will be completed at its appointed time. The last 3 Feast Days are yet to be initiated and fulfilled. The Feast of Passover is a time to prepare your house (your heart) back to God and repent of your sins. Spiritually this is when a person knows that they are a sinner against God and humbly come to Him asking to be forgiven. This is called Justification. To the Jews it is a time of celebrating the exodus from Egypt and the Israelites’ freedom from slavery to the Egyptians. The Feast of Unleavened Bread represents the bodily beating and whipping and crucifixion of Christ and Him putting on Himself (the one that had no sin - unleavened) all our sins (leavened) of mankind and accepting the wrath of God unto death. This act ended the need for animal sacrifices each year and placing a person’s sin onto an animal and then shedding its blood. The High Priest after all individual animal sacrifices would shed the blood of one more animal around 3:00 PM for the sins of the nation of Israel. To the Jews the eating of unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, reminded them why they left Egypt in haste-so that all the days of their life can remember the time of departing from Egypt. The Feast of First Fruits is the resurrection of Christ being Born Again into eternal life and claiming the right to end death and free the captives in Paradise (Abrams Bosom) from hell and take them to heaven. This ended the need to bring the first fruits of the crops and to sacrifice a year-old lamb without defect as a burnt offering to the Temple Priests each year 2 days after Passover for Christ rose from the grave. The Feast of Pentecost is the "Age of Grace" the “Church Age” and the time to harvest as many souls as one can for the kingdom by spreading the Gospel of Christ. To the Jews it is primarily a thanksgiving for the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, but it was later associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. The Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) is the Rapture when Christ resurrects all the souls that died since he left the earth and to change those living into their glorified forever bodies and attend the “Wedding Feast of Christ”. To the Jews the Feast of Trumpets is a celebration on the first day (at the new moon) of the seventh month to bring in a new year. Its name comes from the command to blow trumpets. The Feast of Atonement is when Christ returns with His saints to put an end to the "Great Tribulation" and to cast alive the False Prophet and the Antichrist into the Lake of Fire and send Lucifer to Tartarus and bind him in chains for 1,000 years. To the Jews this day of atonement would occur on the tenth day of Tishri, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. On that day, the high priest was to perform elaborate rituals to atone for the sins of the people. The Feast of Tabernacles is the millennium period of Christ reign on earth with his saints. Those souls that came out of the "Great Tribulation" that surrendered their lives to serve Christ will be allowed to go into the millennium period and they will repopulate the earth and the nonbelievers will be cast into hell. All rulers will come each year to pay their respects to King Jesus in Jerusalem and if not, no rain will fall on their land for the next year. At the end of the Feast of Tabernacles Lucifer will be released from Tartarus and mount a last rebellion against Christ and many souls will join by swearing allegiance to Lucifer. Then Christ will cast Lucifer into the Lake of Fire then conduct the Great White Throne Judgment of all unbelievers. To the Jews the Feast of Tabernacles is when they are to observe each year by going to “appear before the Lord your God in the place which He shall choose”. Once all the feast days are completed the start of the eight day the new beginning will start with destruction of the earth and second heaven. Then a new earth and second heaven will be created free of sin and death. All saints with their glorified bodies will dwell on the new earth with Christ and be allowed to enter the new Jerusalem that will come out of heaven and God will tabernacle with them forever.

No one was resurrected before Him, which is what the crucifixion quake would imply. There were several that were brought back to life but that is NOT resurrection, they still died again. Please read and interpret the scriptures correctly.

You said """Doesn't the bible tell us that at the second coming, both the righteous and unrighteous will be resurrected? """ No I do not think that is true... The "some taken some left" in Matthew 24:40&41 is Very controversial..Its timing is AT the 2nd coming!....Matthew 24 is written to the Tribulation period JEW NOT to the church!!! Imho because of the pre trib rapture, this Matthew 24:40&41 verse is NOT about the church. My point of view is that it is the evil people being removed from the earth to helfire so that only the righteous go into the Millenial kingdom... Now other fundamental people have other opinions... Non-fundamental & non- dispensational people have no foundation from which to properly discern the Bible in any event.

@lewis7315 Coulld be. I believe that the language surrounding those 2 topics - the rapture & the 2nd coming - are purposefully vague as to give more credence to only God knowing the details as far as when. I think that right before the millennial reign, there is the sheep and goats judgment.

This teaching about the Romans using trees that were already in the ground (living trees) to crucify people including Jesus negates or ignores the verses in all the 4 gospels that say Jesus carried his own cross all the way from the place of his sentencing (Pilates palace) to Golgotha. The carrying of the cross is mentioned in all the canonical Gospels: Matthew 27:31-33, Mark 15:20-22, Luke 23:26-32 and John 19:16-18.

If psalm 22 is a prophecy about Jesus that implies two things 1- He didn’t want to die for the sins of mankind 2- God heard his prayer and saved him from his enemies and death As it is obvious from the end of the passage. You can’t choose one part of a prophecy and disregard the rest because it doesn’t align with your belief. That is dishonest. Psalm 22 17- 24 [o]They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And they cast lots for my clothing. 19 But You, LORD, do not be far away; You who are my help, hurry to my assistance. 20 Save my [p]soul from the sword, My only life from the [q]power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion’s mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me. 22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you [r]descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you [s]descendants of Israel. 24 For He has not despised nor scorned the suffering of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
