    You’re definitely not the only one! There’s something to be said about not encouraging this behaviour. If we suck it up collectively and still give them our money, the message that sends is that they can do whatever they want and we’ll still support because we love Miku. Really unfortunate because Miku Expo is kind of the only North American hope for live shows!

    same here! I've been waiting for a Miku concert since 2010ish. But with IAMF cancelled in Europe and this concert having only FIVE European locations, I don't think I'll ever see a real hologram concert in my lifetime. Right now I don't have enough money saved to travel and book a hotel in any of the touring countries, but this whole lcd debacle at least a bit makes me glad that this won't be my first Miku concert.

    Phoenix leg attendee here! This Miku Expo was my first Vocaloid concert ever (and my first 'large' concert experience). Here are some of my main thoughts! - We drove out from Tucson and got to the area around...12:30 or so in the afternoon knowing that the merch tent would open at 2. When we looked on Twitter at the official account, we could already see messages from people that had been in line for merch since, like, 8 in the morning. Having already heard about the whole lightstick fiasco, my hopes for getting one disappeared almost immediately. I still got in the line, however. Said line wrapped around the side of the building, then followed the back wall and then stretched back along the parking lot. After a quick lunch and some shopping, we'd got to the venue at around 3:00 and the line was that long. We wouldn't leave the line until 7:04. Now, I'd never been to a concert, but I was aware that waiting would probably be a thing and queueing was already on my mind so that wasn't the issue. For me the issue was the complete lack of communication from the merch team and their apparent lack of will to work. My two friends and I kept on switching between going up to the tent to see whatever was left and we just couldn't understand why the line was moving SO slowly. There were a lot of people, yes, but the pace at which that line was moving was, to me, ridiculous. It shouldn't take that long to get to the tent, choose what you want, put your card in (cashless event) and then go. And I've worked lines, lmao. Unless people were leaving their spot in line or having a friend save it, there wasn't really a way to know what was officially left, and by 7:30 when I was already in line to get in, the merch line was still wrapped around the side of the building for people hoping to get something. By then, they only had ONE model of shirt and the hoodie. That's it. But they weren't telling anyone anything unless you were almost at the tent so the people around the building were waiting in bliss ignorance. A security guard had told us around 4 that the lightsticks had sold out before the tent even opened because the people that had got there to queue since the morning were already more than the sticks available. Some people came to the tent, bought their stuff and left until later, and there were rumours that people going to the second date were buying merch on the first day, sooo... I don't know. It was all a mess. I was able to get a hoodie and only because I just wanted SOMETHING. - People were getting UberEats or Doordash to the line so it was kind of funny seeing all the dashers with food going back and forth trying to find the one person in line who had ordered. - The show was really cool, imo. The people in the pit were energetic and kept the good vibes going. I was sitting next to 3 friends who'd brought their own lightsticks from Amazon and no one said anything to them at the venue so...try at your own risk! They got through the line without any issues and used those sticks to cheer as well. I wished I had done that, too, if only to be immersed in the experience. - The screen did have pixel issues on one of its sides for, like, half the show. Whenever a character would get on that side, a purple rectangle would show there. It's in many of my videos. - Sure, the whole holograph thing is shitty, but, personally, I didn't really mind the screen too much, but I think they should try to figure out better lightning. When the lights go off and they aren't illuminating the edges of it, it really DOES look like Miku is on the stage because you just can't see the screen. It was really cool when the lights went off and only Miku (or the others) remained for a moment. I think the lighting around the edges of the screen and from behind it are what should be worked on, maybe? I'm not a technician so I don't know. - There was even a brief incident with a girl on a wheelchar that was in the pit. She entered when the pit was already almost full and just BOOKED it down the stage. There was a small bump on the centre of it (ours was an ice rink) and she hit it and her stuff flew off. Then, she tried to get herself over it unsuccessfully for many seconds with NO one offering to help her until she gave up and put her face in her hands. Then someone came over and helped. I didn't see what happened with her afterwards, but I hope the people in the pit allowed her to get closer to the front because otherwise she probably didn't see much at all. I was high in the seated area and I couldn't follow her after she got into the crowd. All in all, I did enjoy myself and I've basically learnt what to do if I ever attend again. Either buy merch online or plan ahead to be there early on the day, etc. I enjoyed the concert and I don't regret my ticket. But, yes, the lack of care and just laziness overall were pretty noticeable.

    Hi hi. Big Vocaloid fan since 2008 here. I was going to get tickets myself for Miku expo but I backtracked the moment I saw who was involved. (o7 rightstuf) While I'm not surprised, I am very disappointed and angry for first time attendees and concert goers. You all deserved a better show. I'm upset with how CFM treats their overseas fans, because I know for a fact they would never let a sponsor pull this nonsense on the Japanese fans. They have seriously dropped the ball and are treating their Western fans like dirt... while charging crazy prices for so little effort. Aren't we all Miku fans? We all love vocaloid, so it's very sad to see how little our support means to them. I advise you all to please vote with your wallets. Send crunchyroll and crypton a very polite but still honest email regarding your thoughts and experience with this year's event. I hope everyone who was let down is able to get refunds, it's only fair for this excuse of a "tour".

    This is the most comprehensive, thorough, thought out and well done video I've seen on this whole situation yet. Thank you for taking the time to make it. In regards to the LED screen/"TV" thing if the stage is setup right it can look very "hologram" like. For example, while not perfect, the recent (early April) Japan only, one night only concert Miku Fes 2024 was also apparently done using the LED tech, and it looked really good. It all comes down to set design, and Miku Fes nailed it so well that I initially thought it was the traditional hologram projection tech. I had to jump through some hoops to watch it, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just hope that the Boston, MA show I'll be at with friends from NYC will be set up right, or at least as to the standard of Miku Fes. I'm going to still be going to the Boston show because for Miku Expo I'd normally go to NYC, but the only show that's close to NYC is in Newark, NJ and that's a pain in the ass to get to from up here in MA. I was hyped up to go to 2020's Boston show, but we all know what happened in 2020. lol. With all that being said, I've been watching this whole thing unfold and it's infuriated, flabbergasted, and disappointed me in more ways than one (especially the Coachella segment/concert... Why the HELL would they want Miku there? Literally no one there knew who she was set aside like 10 ppl with light sticks vibing along with the show). CrunchyRoll CANNOT be allowed to sponsor such a large scale event/tour again. I'm willing to bet that CR was the one to suggest the LED screen "solution" instead of letting CFM use their hologram tech that all the Vocaloid community knows and loves. Miku Expo tours usually happen every other year, so I hope 2026's Miku Expo should it continue the pattern ISN'T MANAGED BY CRUNCHYROLL. As much as I appreciate them for getting anime as it airs in Japan they should never have the rights to Vocaloid stuff. I'm just rambling at this point and getting myself worked up lol so I'll stop here, but thanks again for such a great analysis of the situation. I've subbed. :) P.S. You do NOT have a rat face. :) Also I love the Sailor Moon figures you have there... True, a lot of people are misusing the word “hologram”. It’s a projection on glass. Personally I think it was nice to not have the reflection issue. I’m pretty short so I feel like I wouldn’t have been able to see the image as well with all the light sticks reflecting off the glass.

    I used to subscribe to Crunchyroll, but this fiasco and their history of deceptive business and not caring about the fans has convinced me to go back to sailing the 7 seas for simulcasts and buying DVDs to support the industry. I wish there were more options for legal anime streaming cuz right now the only real option is CR or the seas. :( Edit: Oh my god that poor Canada Miku person!! American atrociousness really out in full force. I can't believe how awfully they were treated. People stole their stuff and the country harrassed them. I went to the Phoenix event yesterday; i am also a very casual Vocaloid enjoyer, but was looking forward to the experience. Can confirm, they still have a limit on the light sticks, and merch in general. I only bought my ticket, because the second day event was reselling pit level for like $21; a steal, i thought; if only i had known the controversies beforehand. After i bought my ticket, and shared on my socials, was i informed by my friends what had been shared online. On the day of, merch was already sold out by the time i arrived. And seeing how few lightsticks there were during the performance was so disappointing. At one point, in line, some one was handing out glowsticks to people, just to help the experience. As my first time seeing Miku, i had fun; but it definitely did not meet the expectation that come with a brand like Vocaloid.

And from experience, organizing one costs more than the tickets actually. It does not translate over well on pictures and videos, mainly because the characters are pretty pale and have white clothing so it gets blown out. But in person it looks awesome and it’s a really fun show. In fact, I saw people were selling their tickets for super cheap for the second day show in my city so I ended up going the next day too! I'm one of the few who actually got a ticket normally. Actually had no idea about the whole code thing. Fought for my LIFE for those tickets, and they were normal tickets, not even VIP. The tickets were around $330 for 2 people, with a $13 parking ticket and a whopping $61.74 fee. Again, these are base ticket prices. I did get tickets smack in the middle of the show, but me and my partner weren't very close or very far to the stage. I'll explain my experience since I went to the Orlando show at Dr. Phillips. This show was not the usual and had assigned seating for everyone, instead of it just being a big mosh pit. The doors were set to open at 6:30pm, and the show as at 8pm, no sooner no later. VIPS were told to arrive at 6pm if I recall. Me and my partner showed up at 6:20pm and began our walk to the back of the line, and WHAT a walk it was! The line to get into the building stretched all the way around the building and down a couple blocks. I assumed no liquids were allowed so I left my bottle in the car, and by the time we got to the back of the line I was regretting that decision. For a show with ASSIGNED SEATING, the line was INSANE. I don't know what the heck they were doing up there, but it sure wasn't letting people in. It was hot, around 85F or so (thankfully with a slight breeze), and by the time we made it to the door it was around 7:30pm, and at that point, the staff was freaking out because they were taking so long to let people in that they were telling us the show would start at 8pm no matter what and if you are not inside the building and sitting at your seat you would miss the show. Finally, they were letting people in at a better pace, but way too late. Also, the entire time people were in line no staff came to offer anyone water. The building was not fit to handle the size of this show, since Dr. Phillips is more meant for orchestras and broadway shows than big performances like this, which is probably why the staff was having a hard time letting people in because they were just not used to this type of crowd. Me and my partner just booked it to the seats despite both of us being very thirsty and dehydrated being outside for an hour and a half or so. We WOULD've gotten drinks, but the drink line was insanely long. I only learned they had a water fountain leaving the building, so we were thirsty the whole show. We also skipped the long merch line. I wasn't gonna buy merch anyways because it was all way too expensive, but I do feel bad for the people that were waiting in line for hours and couldn't get merch due to the sluggish pace people were being let in at. This being my first concert, I was not ready for it to be so LOUD. I think the drums were mixed not great because on the whole right side of the building, there was this loud sound that I think was from the drums and it kinda hurt haha. I did not bring earplugs, so I basically held my ears with my fingers the whole show. There was one guy in front of me and my partner that offered earplugs, but I declined thinking it was like... a box of mints or something (stupid me) and I felt embarrassed to ask post-declining, so that's my fault. However, I could definitely tell this theater was not ready for an audience size this big and a setup this loud. In the end I did have fun. I danced to the songs and it was great hearing some songs and seeing Miku dance around like a princess. It was of course very disappoint to have no hologram and no original band members. I will say though, the band members they did bring in did a very good job. No hate for them, they killed it. If I got a refund (which I couldn't but hypothetically) I would've been disappointed I missed it. I went home with my ears ringing and a headache due to dehydration, but it WAS fun. I just hope if they do this again, 1: the tickets aren't so damn expensive and 2: they give miku a proper holographic screen.

    I went to the Phoenix concert blindly and without context of who Hatsune Miku is and what Vocaloids are. I’ve seen some fanart of her from comic/anime conventions and my friends know some of her songs. My friends and I bought the pre-sale tickets last September, and they were not cheap, but still were able to get decent seats. I only went to this concert just for the vibes and to spend time with my friends. I wondered how Miku was going to be set up live since she is a virtual singer and not a living, tangible, being. (Put down the pitch forks and torches, people). I wondered if there was going to be screens or a hologram, or AI despite my distaste for them. I wish I wasn’t right sometimes, knowing the results of how the concert is set up currently. 🤦🏻‍♀️ As for the merch, my friends and I spent the early morning until afternoon in the merch line just to get light sticks and other merch. And yes, since we live in Arizona, it did get hot as the line got longer. There were about 100 light sticks that were being sold, and there was a one light stick per person rule, and people bought two or more because of course they did. I was aware of the controversies of the other Miku Expo 2024 concerts from the other cities before Phoenix, but I didn’t let it ruin my concert-going experience. Again, went to the concert blindly, w/o context of the Miku/ Vocaloid community, and for the vibes. Would I sit and stand for 5 hours in a merch line again? Nope. Would I go to another Miku concert again? Screen or no screen yeah. Overall, the concert was fun and the crowd was super hyped.

    I was gonna try to get tickets to the Boston show but the prices were insane that I backed out and decided on watching the VR live last year like I did before. I honestly feel like that was much better than the actual expo, While yes I would miss on seeing Ten Thousand Stars and Intergalactic Bound as a massive Circus-p fan, I felt like I got more bang for my buck with the VR live, even if it was free via YT. This years expo is a disaster and somehow both the VR live from last year AND the coachella apperence were better (Coachella is a dubious better here) than the actual expo.

A few months ago lowest prices were $350, and now I can get main floor for $200, but I don’t know most of the songs in set list, and from what I have seen/read it seems like they didn’t do the best at organizing things. So, I was thinking maybe waiting and hoping they bring it back to Detroit another year. I know people probably didn’t record with best devices, aka phone, but you can hear the band just drowning out Miku, and I don’t like that. I was wondering how you watch it on VR? I have a Quest 3. Is there a website for that and does it cost money? I would like to give that a try myself.

    Sad to hear, but good you enjoyed it somewhat anyway. Corporate greed is in general a deadening force as soon as the people who care for "the product", albeit on different levels, have left or were made to leave and the money making becomes the only driving force. It is hurtful to the original creators, artists, engineers and caring management involved originally or now. Or there is a disconnect on other levels. I'm relatively new to the Miku phenomenon and see that one can approach it in quite different ways. It is part of the AI menace or inspiring for soul and spirit. If one gives form to anything on a soul level, fans and inspired creators give something to Miku as they gain something from her... propably much more than what is easily seen. So it/she becomes much more than a hologram. This is worthwhile studying. Just take the fan made corner at the event in Vancouver! Amazing. And of course then one has all the other issues even around that deed of love, like theft and going by the book and just call the police. Thanks for sharing! PS:One has to also consider incompetence and the language and borders issue. Why don't they want to bring all there technology abroad? Transparency would indeed help and thus fans could help the "owners" of Miku... and Miku to improve on future events.

  • @CourageousGoldfish

    @CourageousGoldfish

    Ай бұрын

    Yes, thank you for taking the time to articulate such great points! I think the nuance a lot of major media outlets aren’t quite capturing is that this hurt goes to a much deeper level than just ‘fake anime girl isn’t a hologram wah!’. BECAUSE Miku isn’t ‘real’, any life she lives or the personality she has are created by the community. Whether it’s producers making songs, fans supporting and loving the music, artists using their talents to bring her to life in so many different mediums… ultimately she is everything we make her to be. And that’s why the response probably feels so hollow and off key in this whole situation, because it’s SUCH a fan led fandom.

    @@CourageousGoldfish Hi again. Only fans or those truly interested can know and learn more about a phenomenon like Miku(no other like it!). The whole question of responsibility when binding emotions or liberating them through music. In creating a character you create a personalized focal point and although one might not be aware of it, if one is a materialist, you create a being that is increasingly! real! although certain aspects of it are indeed illusion. Similar like to a vampir gives blood, but here out of interest and love one gives life to a vocaloid, whose sound was created using a human voice to begin with. Other than the AI discussion today with implants and all the other technological questions involved, this is some kind of an alchemical process of creation due to the creativity, the music and dance choreography volunteered to Miku, and the enthusiasm of fans. All this makes her real in the sense, perhaps, of (for example) Hamlet being more real than many humans existing in the flesh today, who have lost their capacity to think themselves on their way to true freedom. Born through technology and dark, obscure electromagnetism, but fostered by love and generating deeper feelings and thoughts in people like us towards a personalized Miku, makes it(Mikuism) a her(Miku) beyond the original creation and intention, and her thus increasingly more real. We might keep in mind that there is darkness in each individual life, so that happens to Miku, plus she originates from an obscure world of algorithms, but the future, ours and her future depends on the liberation(or bondage) of the human mind. Many of "her" songs express questions of an existential nature for her(and the authors) in between the worlds. Being concerned with being, it means that we might have some responsibility here. Even or especially when the money driven management fails or tries to laugh about fans. In the case of Miku the process of becoming has gone farther than with other attempts, due to the magic of music and dance. So far, if I find time I should write an article about this, even if it might prove quite outlandish to my friends. Without my son's interest in anime I would never have thought about this all. Thus you also helped me further with your report. Thanks.

But I also hope that the setlist gets a mix up because from the setlists I saw it seems there is a lot of slower songs and for a 10th Anniversary i was hoping for more party songs.
