What "GSync Compatible" Actually Means | NVIDIA at CES 2019

Ойындар

NVIDIA's "GSync Compatible" displays use adaptive sync (_VBLANK attribute) and will work with FreeSync displays to smooth-out frame presents.
Ad: Buy Gigabyte's Z390 Master motherboard (geni.us/eIQnI on Amazon)
In this video, we talk about what NVIDIA actually means when it says a display is "GSync Compatible," as opposed to "GSync" or "FreeSync." Terminologically, it's just a means to differentiate displays that have gone through validation for brightness consistency, VRR ratio compliance, and flicker-free output.

what gsync compatible means, is they can take the best of the best of free sync monitors, slap a gsync compatible label on it, and get some extra cash from monitor makers to get a gsync compatible label put on their monitors. in other words, nvidia is doing another power grab and forcing their will on monitor makers. top of the line freesync monitors are already within the extreme margins of gsync. yet...i kinda doubt reviewers will call them out on their bs. some of the issues of freesync monitor are low hz range monitors which are cheap crap. so...in top of the line freesync monitors, there is no issues, hence why nvidia wants to put a gsync label on it, so they can do yet another power grab and claim their "tech and standards are better than amd" which simply isn't the case. the top of the line freesync monitors already are quality controlled by the manufacturers themselves. simply put, ngreedia, wants to try to take even freesync from amd and they are going to get away with it cause no one is going to call them out for it.

Do you know if this would apply to older monitors? For example, my MG279Q (one of the first Freesync monitors) had an initial FS range of 35-90Hz. I changed it to 57-144Hz, but it clearly struggles and flickers between or at at precisely 56-59 FPS. If I could change the range to 70-144Hz for example and retain LFC, that sounds awesome.

well ill just tell you that the monitor that he said was "ok" for him is a freesync 2 monitor. i have it. its a samsung chg70 most likely. i think the problem with it though is that overdrive only works from 120-144hz. if you stay in that range then it will look great most likely. lower fps is probalby where the problem is. of course samsung made monitors in 1080p and some that are less expensive int he same style as this one and maybe thats what they are. but they are all 144hz monitors. and im pretty sure thats my cgh70 with freesync 2 right there. but again if you can keep the fps above 120 you should be good. im sure a lot of monitors will have the same situation where with some settings or some ranges it will work fine.

LFC on FreeSync used to require 2.5x between min and max, but that got relaxed down to 2x + 1 on a lot of panels. I'm not sure if AMD do per-panel validation before enabling LFC on monitors over 2x but under 2.5x, but would be a great question to ask them. I think NVIDIA (and AMD) want that extra buffer because jumping from min / max Hz could put a lot of strain on the scaler and cuz edge-case flickering.

gsync actually covers the complete range up to 144hz or 240hz now. Compared to amds much smaller freesync range. The module also covers other calibrations for color and brightness and does more overall compared to freesync so yes the module that costs 100-150$ more has more benefits over freesync.

Someone like Steve needs to actually test these once they roll it out. One of the major weaknesses of freesync displays is much higher input lag without the gsync hardware onboard. See tftcentral's LG 950F/950G reviews for info on this (same panel, one with gsync and one with freesync). My guess is that the "Gsync Compatible" displays without the actual hardware on them will have input lag more similar to freesync displays, which is to say worse. Say what you will about the gsync pricing strategy, but there are valid reasons why Nvidia opted to use a hardware solution.

So can I use my Vega Frontier Edition on Dell S2716DG to get some kind of Freesync. All the coverage seems to revolve around Nvidia supporting Freesync on some Gsync monitors what about using a Gsync monitor with a Amd Vega GPU?

Question. I have a Samsung u28d590d 60hz 4k freesync monitor,it looks amazing but being I have a1080 ti ftw3 I upgraded to an alienware 240hz 1080p gsync display. I miss the 4k and really notice the lower resolution. Being that now possibly I could use gsync on the 4k display... Would you? Could you go from 240hz to 60hz for the resolution upgrade if both had gsync? Thanks cause I was about to sell the 4k monitor for $200 not sure if I should now

I personally prefer a higher resolution over higher frames in most of my games. I have a 4k screen and absolutely cannot go back to 1080 no matter the frame rate, it's just too jarring after using a higher resolution. I've regretted my upgrade to 4k60 ever since testing 1440/144, that seems to be the sweet spot as the difference between 1440 and 4k is practically unnoticeable in the games I play (arena shooters, FPS and city builders (the last one may be the exception)

@@corenne i am going to hook up my 4k and see if gsync works on it now.. if so at the very least I could sell it much easier.. cause I would like to sell both of mine and get 1440/144 as well.. perfect balance.. i paid a premium just to get gsync and honestly i cant tell a difference lol

2:00 I think that's my screen on the left, 34" LG 34UC79G-B. and I do get the random occasional what seems to be a single black frame. but that doesn't seam to happen until my EVGA SC 1070 gets up to 85c in Destiny 2 frames capped at 100fps. I also capped my refresh rate at 100hz in windows/nvidia control panel, since most of my games don't realistically play at a constant 144fps.

I wouldn't count on it considering how old that architecture is at this point. I just looked online and none of the Maxwell cards support freesync. Only pascal and newer cards are supporting it. Unfortunate, but it seems almost all Nvidia cards will support g-sync (obviously) although it's just really expensive...

Please test how FS monitor + Nvidia works vs FS+AMD later, esp with monitors that exhibit blinking/flashing. Also, for the middle monitor, is it really freesync that messes up the image? I'd think it was the panel itself, no matter if FS is enabled or not.

It's worth pointing out that FreeSync isn't just AMD's branded version of VESA adaptive sync. AMD drove the creation of the open standard. VESA adaptive sync is, in a very real sense, FreeSync.

So if your FreeSync monitor has a refresh range of 48-144Hz such as a XG27VQ or a XG32VQ , This would put you to a ratio of 3. Would being at a ratio of 3 be better overall, Or is 2.5 the target?

Man! I've been seriously considering buying a desktop for a while since I got a 34" ultrawide Crossover monitor that supports Freesync. Just to be able to use an AMD video card and Freesync along with it, but there hasn't been a good card to buy for 3440x1440 at 75+ FPS. I know it's under-powered for the task, but I've been getting by with a laptop GTX 1060 on this monitor for a while. Will I be able to enable adaptive sync/Freesync on this monitor and use it with my laptop? My understanding is "Yes." But when can I start, and how do I do it?

So my question is (probably a dumb question but) will Nvidia support adaptive sync on their current GSync monitors as well? Doubt it, since that would mean making the modules play nice with AMD (and Intel, in the future), but one can hope...
