    Juna's English is very good! She had me laughing for about two hours in the British Museum in 2019 when we (Marie Fukui, Juna, Rie Tomimatsu, Kanade Sato and 'Papa' Sato (as Juna called Kanade's dad) and Katsufumi Murakami were exploring the museum. Senri's English is pretty good too.

    Chizu is such a helluva guitarist. She would be perfect in any world-class jazz fusion band. She has the right approach to everything she does and the tones she uses are absolutely perfect and spot on. I would hire her in a second.

    Been playing drums since around 1959. Senri is one of my favorites. Their English is fantastic. If I tried to speak Japanese,it would probably come out as “the donkey in my teeth needs a roof”. I love what these young women do and I hope that they keep doing it for quite some time.

    That's a great idea, and perhaps one that will actually come about. Of course there's the "Senri's Seven" video which is pretty informative in that sense. There's also a written interview with Senri from a few years back that I believe was in an Eastern European country she was visiting. She discusses many of the contemporary drummers often cited as "the world's best." As you might expect, she's very respectful and appreciative towards them all, and she REALLY knows what's going on. I imagine most, if not all of the JA members have plenty to say about influences. You can be sure Miku does! So, yeah, cool suggestion, hope we get to see that.

    I know Senri started playing young, but it looks like she stopped ageing when she started playing! She's what, 26 now? I'd swear she was still 13. Such a baby, but also what a great leader. She's built one of the greatest jazz bands playing in the world today. (It just needs a brass section! I'd volunteer, but I was never that good.)

    I often see suggestions that JA should add brass, or add a bari sax. (There IS a bit of bari on “One by One”) Of course, more horns would make them more versatile, (and I love the baritone sound) but I don’t think that is something that will happen, other than perhaps a guest appearance.. What they have now is very unique - I’m not aware of of any other band that uses S-A-A-T on a regular basis - AFAIK soprano sax isn’t often used in ensembles. So I’m guessing that the line-up they use was a very deliberate choice and not just a result of circumstance. (They could have done it differently - they are all superb on alto, Miho also plays soprano, tenor and flute, and Miku plays great soprano and Aerophone. Juna plays sax pretty well, too.) Horn sections with brass is already covered by many excellent bands - EWF, ToP, Memphis Horns to name just three. Or one could check out Senri and Miho in the Tokyo Jazz All-Stars - plenty of brass there, as well as many of the finest musicians in the world. To sum up this long-winded bit of yakking - I dig those horns just the way they are.

  • @RayyMusik

    @RayyMusik

    @@peterb7923Absolutely. I don‘t think they need a brass section either. Also, occasional brass stabs could be done by Marie with adequate samples.

    "English Challenge" was SO much fun, and very helpful to those of us who haven't learned Japanese very well. But the sense of fun and spirit is just as evident when they're speaking Japanese, or playing their incredible music. For me, the best part came from Marie (who spoke almost nothing in English) - "Don't worry about making mistakes." It's been said many times before, but probably not enough times. There is a very famous quote by Charlie Parker about how to become a great musician. I doubt if The Jazz Avengers would use his choice of words, but in my opinion, they are one of the very best examples of that philosophy.

    The tenor sax player, Miku, is my favorite. She is so small, yet climbs the walls with that tenor. Senri is next. Even smaller than Miku, but such stick technique, and she is so relaxed even though she is just tearing it up. But every person in the band is extraordinary. I am glad they are so nice to each other as well. That seems to be a Japanese trait. Come see us in America soon!

    Whatever you do, have fun! When I was about to finish high school, I went to an advisor. He asked me about my interests. - Photography and aviation, I said. - And what are you planning in the future? he asked. - Engineering, I replied. - You should do what you like to do, he said. - There's no future in that, I thought. But I never became an engineer. First, I worked with photography at a professional level for 7 years. Then, I became a pilot. What I have learned is that it is important to have fun in your life. Therefore, it is so fantastic to see the memebers in the band having fun together.

    Thanks for the summary! I've been waiting for a rundown of Chizuru-san's rig, as I was curious about the colourful multi-button box. Now I know it is a "switcher". Do you use it just to switch between pedal combinations on the board, or also amp channels? I used to use one external switch of the Roland GP-8 to switch amp lead channel on / off according to the preset. I really like your wah-sound; comes through nicely in the mix without dominating too much.
