Thank you so much for these videos. I’ve watched them a couple times over the years and it inspires me not to react negatively when my daughter has an issue. I appreciate the time you have taken to make the videos.

Mine is only wetting during the day. I’m at my wits end. Mine has completely stopped trying. Idk what else to do. I want to cry. She’s been home sick with an upper respiratory illness and she has completely neglected going to the bathroom like I know she can. I’ve left the light on for her. Door is not opened because I have another child who goes into the bathroom and plays in the toilets. I have tried being kind and calm for literally months now. Why is she doing this?

My son has told me that he doesn't want to pee his pants at school because someone might say something. He appears to have ADHD-level inattentiveness and has enjoyed wetting his diaper since he was a child. He also can't handle us so much as mentioning his issue. I'll say "Please use the toilet." "Why" "Do you really want me to say" "[looks] [whines/cries/kicks/distracts himself]"

I’m in the same boat with my child possibly having inattentiveness when it comes to his day wetting. He was diagnosed with ADHD but didn’t thing K it would cause a problem with going to the bathroom 😤

January 1, 2024 Happy New Year! I can offer some general information to help your daughter. Daytime wetting is almost always due to two problems. First, the bladder holds less pee than the average for age. The two most common causes of a smaller bladder are bladder infection and poop pressing on the bladder at the bottom of the pelvis. Second, the child is distracted from paying attention to the full bladder signal. Bladder infection is especially common in girls, so you should check her urine to look for infection, and if present, treat the infection with an antibiotic. Always recheck the urine after treatment to ensure the infection goes away and stays away. Poop pressing on the bladder is very common. Usually, the children do not poop every day, and when they do poop, they do so later in the day. The poop is typically pasty or hard. If your child does not poop every day or if the poop is pasty or hard, you need to increase the water and fibre (beans, lentils, grains, vegetables, fruit) in her diet to soften the poop and achieve a daily poop. It is common for there to be a difference in the frequency of wetting between home time and school (away from home) time. This is most common in young preschool children but also happens in grade school children. A common reason for children to wet away from home (school) is that they are less comfortable using the bathroom at the school or mosque/church. This is especially common in younger children. They might have anxieties about stopping an activity (praying) to go to the bathroom. Maybe they don’t want to ask the supervising adult. Maybe the bathroom is not as clean as the home bathroom. Perhaps there are bigger girls in the bathroom who tease younger girls. Young children have many anxieties about bathrooms. Young children, especially the “busy” ones, are easily distracted and lose touch with the bladder signals. It is difficult for young children to stop a compelling play activity. A common reason for children to wet less often at home is because the parents are there to structure more frequent visits to the bathroom. Adult caregivers away from home are usually less attentive than parents. They don’t remind the child as much. A very important principle is that young children do not wet their pants on purpose. They are not being bad. They lose touch with the bladder signals when they are distracted. Children should not be punished for wetting. The wetting is not their fault. About a fifth (20%) of five-year-old children wet by day. By age 8, only a few percent of children are still wet by day. This means the problem will slowly improve. If you make sure there is no infection, if you soften and improve the frequency of poops, and if you are patient and structure voiding more often, the wetting goes away sooner. Dr. Lane Robson

Hello Rahat Ejaz, About one-fifth of four-year-olds still have daytime wetting, so this is common, and usually not serious. The first thing to check is for infection in the urine, especially in girls. This can be done with a urine test. Make sure you check the first-morning urine. If there is an infection, treat the infection with an antibiotic. If infection is not the cause, then there are two things happening. First, there is poop pressing on the bladder at the bottom of the pelvis, and the poop causes the bladder to be smaller and to lose control. The poop pattern might look good to you, but poop is ALWAYS part of the problem. Make sure the poop is not only daily but optimally first thing in the morning. Make sure she takes time and sits with the correct posture to relax and empty the poop. Above all, MAKE SURE THE POOP IS SOFT. Soft poop requires more fibre in the diet (beans, lentils, fruits, vegetables) and A LOT MORE WATER. I usually recommend a poop softener medication. It usually takes several months to improve the poop pattern and softness. This is a crucial step. Be patient. Second, Lots of four-year-old girls (and boys) lose touch with the signals of bladder fullness. This is a brain function that slowly improves over time. This will improve much faster if the bladder is larger (soft daily poops). Four-year-olds do not realize they have lost touch with the signals. Never scold your daughter for wetting. It is not her fault.
