You’re probably more than familiar with language like “stage 2 turbo” or “stage 3 tune” but if we really pressed you on the different stages of tuning, would you be able to lay out a definitive set of guidelines for what those stages actually mean? Does bumping up each stage mean I’m going to double my horsepower? Triple? Dare I say it, quadruple?! Well today on B2B, Uncle Jerry is going to get into the stages of tuning, and answer all your questions. Every question you have, he'll answer.

I saw that video. I hope they make another fast and furios video. I am not a huge fast fan. But there were cool moments. In my opinion the best being that scene at the end of ff 7 where they do the little send off to Paul walker. That part where Bryan and toretto were driving side by side and their lanes diverge was kind of sad.

Stage 1: bolt ons. Intake, exhaust, wheels, springs, exterior accoutrement. Stage 2: headers, turbo (if equipped) back exhaust, seats, steering wheel, suspension (street), small aero improvements, brakes. Stage 3: turbo (or s/c, all required now except big block) full ecm/tcm, upgraded suspension and brakes required, cage (probably) specific function in mind, aero is undoubtedly a problem now, chassis imptovements (tube frame?) Stage 4: fully everything in that category as far as bolt on or off the shelf parts, ready to attack the track (in whatever form) from what you could find on summitt or Jegs, custom aero, no interior, frame mods, etc... Stage 5: purpose built. Say no more. You have a goal and a plan to meet it. All manufacturers and all records are calculated. You know when you're here.

Except this is so variable. My car has a stage 1 tune, and that’s just a raw computer tune to the transmission and the ECU. It goes from 290hp/290ft-lb torque to 365hp/380ft-lb torque. Bolt ons don’t happen until stage 2. The stages not only depend on the tuning company, but also the car itself. Some cars can’t handle the added power and need upgrades. Some can, and can be tuned significantly before needing to upgrade hardware.

The "Stage" nomelclature actually existed before Grand Tourismo, though I'll agree that the game did expand it's usage to the wider audience. The one example I'm super familiar with is the Buick GS/GSX series starting in 1968 through '75 used "Stages" as an upgrade package options. Stage 1 got you the Wildcat 455 cubic inch engine over the Buick 350, dual exhaust over single, and a larger 4 barrel carb, arriving at the 360hp, 510ft/lb torque monster. Stage 2 was a very rare package option that was sold as a dealer option, or to wrench happy individuals and were shipped out in the trunk of the car, and less than 5 Stage 2 GSX packages were actually installed by the factory. High flow heads, high flow intake manifold, custom exhaust porting, a more aggressive camshaft, hollow pushrods for improved lubrication, forged piston heads, a tuned up 4 barrel carb are what's known, but there could have been other race-inclined options included. Their factory example had a much higher rear differential ratio than the usual GS (at 4.78) to help transfer all that torque to the tires, but I don't know if that was a thing that came with the Stage 2 package or not.

The only thing I use stages for is cams, because the kinda guys I talk to don't understand lift/duration and stuff. Other than that I might say "they call it a stage 2 trans" but then proceed to lay out that it comes with better clutch packs that are rated up to 600 ft-lbs input, a custom redone valve body, and a brazed 2200 stall lockup torque converter good for about 500 horsepower. And if I'm talking about something like I'm running twin 57mm precisions feeding a gen3 whipple, etc, etc, and they don't get it then I might dumb it down and say something like "think of it as a solid overall stage 6 setup that makes 1xxx horsepower (for the record I'm running a full bolt on motor right now making maybe 300, not dumb enough to run a thousand horse motor on a 500 horse cobverter.

I've thought about all the various car channels on KZread (and elsewhere), and Donut is mostly "how did this car, model, company, way of things in driving and the automobile industry, etc, come to be?" They've sort of diversified from that more recently, but much of their main originals - Bumper2Bumper, Up To Speed, and Wheelhouse - are of this vein. Other popular car channels: MightyCarMods: "What nonsense can we do with this car?" RegularCars: "What does this car mean, in it's time and now, and who is it for?" Top Gear/Grand tour: "How can these cars make 3 old British guys behave like middle schoolers?" Engineering Explained: "How does this car work?"

"stage" mods also vary by car - For example, in a WRX or STi stage 1 is commonly accepted as an aftermarket tune, stage 2 involves a downpipe (high flow cats or catless) and tune. Stage 3 is where it gets wonky though, as it's usually fuel system, turbo and/or intercooler upgrades and a reflash, but it gets pretty "a-la-cart" depending on the individuals goals. CAI & catback can be done whenever as they don't really have an impact on the cars performance (CAI usually has a negative impact though).

I've always thought of stages like so Stage 1: street upgrades, nothing crazy, no track days Stage 2: street/ track upgrades, for a car you can drive to a track day and drive it home Stage 3: full on racecar stuff

I dare say, most race cars don't use these things. A lot of GT4 class race cars, like the GT4 Mustang, GT4 Camaro, etc., actually don't have a single engine mod... Basically just better brakes, wheels, and slick tyres. Maaaaaaaybe racing coilovers. B-Spec touring cars, for example, use almost entirely unmodified Ford Fiesta (non-ST trim) or MINI Cooper non-D type cars with ~110 WHP in racing spec Spec Miata, basically all unmodified engines... A majority of modern race cars, you don't really have to turn wrenches on them. Remove interior, weld in a cage, bolt in safety equipment and you're done.

Even that's inconsistent though. One tuning company's "Stage 4" is another's "Stage 2". Only thing the stage numbers is good for is to tell the buyer in which order to buy and install the packages.
