Starfield is an open-world role-playing game in which players assume the role of a miner tasked with finding Artifacts across the galaxy. From first-/third-person perspectives, players interact with various characters, complete quests, and search for supplies while battling enemies (e.g., humans, robots, alien creatures).

400g (nearly 1 pound) = 200 kcal, that is very low nutrition value. They are made of substance that human body can not digest and flavorings. 😂😂😂 Definitely not other humans because 1 pound of meat would have 600+ kcal

My guess is Celulose fiber and artificial protein suplimemt. Regularity in low-G and zero-G environments is just as important as it is on earthlike and near-earthlike gravity. 200cal per chunk is pretty low for 400g. Low-cal diet is important in transport/travel hravy jobs where the driver/pilot/crew is largely sedentary. The end result is a substantial food that fills but doesn't digest and process to fat. Of course, that doesn't explain the option to make a lardass in the character creator. Wine chunks flavors are probably just gelatin and flavored alcohol. My personal favorite thing to say is "Cabernet Chunkingnon" because it's the only one that worked the word "chunk" into the existing word.

Another important thing as to why Chunks are chunks, brand identity. It's impossible to mistake a Chunk for any other kind of food and you instantly know what you're getting when you see that cube of comprssed food
I get the vibe that they're made from tofu or something similar, not meat at all, purely plant protein. I think it'd be funny to have a quest that talks up the horror of chunks, have several characters give you hints that they're made from Soylent green or something, only to find out at the end that it's totally innocent and actually really clean and the founder is losing his mind because everyone thinks it's a horrible secret.
@goblinloremaster6101
9 ай бұрын
That would be a hillarious twist of fate that would subvert the classic Solyent green trope by simply playing it straight and having Chunks just be plain tofu chunks mixed with protein additives like eggs, whey, and other common proteins (Possibly mushrooms for a meat texture). But everyone in the settled systems are so used to expecting the worst that some nut hires the player to investigate the company's main hidden HQ and the end result has either destroys the company or has them lose their secret recipes due to a bunch of idiots.

You ever see those generic 'Nutrient' items? That's probably what chunks are made from, sourced from all over the Settled Systems, like that employee said. They don't know what's in them because they're made of all kinds of stuff. Tissue, Stalks, Seeds, Saps, Roots, Leaves, Flowers, Carapaces, Glands, Bones, Hides and Vital Fluids. Chunks is the only fast food *franchise*. There's plenty of fast food options in the settled systems, but due to how kinda...spread out and sparsely populated humanity is in Starfield it's mostly small independent businesses using locally sourced foods. More diner-style. You can get a patty-melt with fries, kebabs, tacos, wraps, hoagies etc
This guy is asking the real questions.
I personally think that Chunks signature chunks are really just highly processed food products combined with a lot of preservatives has oils, fats, spices, sugars and salts added (for taste), and covered with a proprietary “secret sauce” which in reality is just made of cheap and abundant spices and common sauces. So basically run of the mill fast food!!

some sort of xeno animal or plant but highly unlikely to be chasmbass or any animal's offal, since Chunks weight 400 gram (that's about half kilogram or a pound), but only has like 200Kcal of energy, I mean this thing is a diet food, it can make you full but you don't really get much from it (an adult human, in average would burn 2000 Kcal per day on basic needs, like you don't need to do exercise and gym, you just wake up, do some desk job and take a dump and play vedio game, this one day will cost you 2000Kcal, so you know 400 gram food gives you only 200Kcal that is like, just sad.....), it must be really cheap to make, could be entirely factory chemical synthesis, like it is not even from real xeno animal, just some chemicals combined..... this thing should be the last result to eat I think, it doesn't sounds right from any angle.... @@lostsoulltd

Tofu, which is made from Soybeans, can be retexturized to nearly any consistency. Tofu has almost no flavor of its own and there are entire restraunts that specialize in making Tofu taste like meat and other foods. Something tells me that Chunks isn't made from soybeans (mainly the burger and cheesesteak is some sort of gel) but the technique to flavor Tofu and potato chips is likely the same. Not sure Chunks would bother retexturizing the product for a better mouth feel.
Given everything we know about Chunks, my guess is that there isn't anything necessarily nefarious about them, it's just that they are completely artificial. And not in the sense like synthmeat, which seems to try to mimic real meat to the celular level, I mean like flavoured plastic. Some sort of polymer that though edible, is actually indegestible, and the calories in the label are just enough nutrient supplements they put in the cubes before pumping them full of artificial flavoring. That would explain their indefinite shelf life, the fact that all of them have the same nutritional content, and their desire for secrecy
(Update: I was just wandering around the Well and realized that the blood spatter/Chunks special sauce I was remembering (along with a whole bunch of unrefrigerated seafood-of-unknown-origin and "organic waste") is behind Jake's. So probably don't eat there. Also, I'd really like to know what's in that sauce.) I'm late to this conversation, but there is that one place where you find a case of Chunk's special sauce next to what looks like blood spatter. As I recall, I ran across it by entering the Well via the Lodge escape tunnel thing. It was a "what the hell happened here?" moment. It was a fleeting moment, because there were more pressing matters to deal with, but I have been suspicious of Chunks ever since 😂The square Chunks "egg" pretty much clinches it as a no-go for me. You find those all over, sans wrapper, and it just look like the egg was crammed in there against its will.
Thank you for the subtitles
"these chunks look innocent enough". Cube food is not innocent! 😂

Don't know if this is too off topic but I really like how most of the books in Starfield are just like excerpts. It lets me feel like I'm actually encountering and carrying around full on books in the game without anyone actually needing to write or read 120 pages of autobiography.
I really hope that in the NG+ universes, there is one where you get Spheres or something, and an actual location or ship for more background. Equally though, I suspect because of their promotional stuff all involving chunks, they've held back the end of the questline so they can do new flavours for the promo of the expansion too. It feels like this is just prep for something later anyway. Alongside maybe starbases and mechs. And almost certainly the House Va'ruun home-world. Beth games are too easily data-mined too. If anything content-wise is going to drop as a free update, it'll be when the creation kit launches and it would be something of a promotional nature like this.

That will never happen since chunks have two possible outcomes in the game so far from what I found. Unpacked chunks are what is leftover of people when Sam is done with them. it the 1st line in the autobiography My life Chunk by Chunk " Humans are animals smart animals sure, but still animals. " that line alone make me not pick up chunks when getting loot I highly think it made with human. just a side note but have you seen a grave yard or cemetery. and knowing that Bethesda likes to put cannibalisms in there games. this makes prefect sense to me.
I've met a worker on some planet doing some really shitty work and his comment when I passed was - 'work isn't great, but better than working in the chunks kitchen. I have still nightmares about that.' I don't think anyone wants to know what chunks really are. I don't know how popular the movie is, but chunks reminded me about a movie with the French comedian Louis de Funes called 'The Wing or the Thigh' from 1976
I was always sceptical of Chunks and never touched them. Whenever my character was hungry I boarded a Crimson Fleet Wright as these have a huge galley with real grapes, peaches and at least one boxed meal made from fresh ingredients.

I remember someone saying that Chunks was some form of printed/freeze dried food product. It could be a remnant idea during the NASA era that could have taken off. That being said, there's no telling what's in that stuff and, if the Ryujin quest line is indicative of anything, it's that corporations are supremely involved in some shady dealings.

There are some Chunks vending machines that look very much like 3D printers, so I feel like that's not to far off. Plus they all have that embossed logo. I don't honestly think there is any kind of deep dark secret here. Just that it's a corporation doing what corporations do and producing a sort of cheap, edible paste slurry that's flavored and colored to look like various foods, then printed or pressed into branded cube shapes. Since it's available to be eaten right out of the package I don't think it's freeze dried. Those foods are normally reconstituted with hot water. Just shelf stable food cubes. Then again, this is Bethesda writing, and if there's anything they love doing it's having companies like this go too far in the pursuit of profit.

Chunks are one of, if not the most abundant item group in the game. We know that they must be being produced in significant quantities somewhere, so where in the Starfield is the factory? Could it be located on a rogue, extrasolar planetoid or space station? We can travel to every star within range, and they themselves would have to be in a relatively central location for product distribution reasons.

I think chunks are the remnants of the xenowarfare projects. Maybe it’s terrormorphs, or heat leeches since they are everywhere until you wipe them mostly out via the vanguard quest line. Soylent Green !!!
Chunks! Chunks! Chunks!
Seeing as there are "bug" food items, if Chunks were made of bugs I don't think they would need to hide the fact. Or that it would be considered nefarious.
I found a wall with a scrawled comment saying something like "does anyone else think chunks taste like plants?" The follow up is a yes. It's just some sort of plant protein with artificial flavors, and fancy texture methods. But the reason we can't find a Chunks factory is because there is no factory. There are a load of unusable vending machines which look kind of like 3D printers, and they have some text on them. I think they were meant to be Chunks printers, even though there are working Chunks vending machines. Though, the Chunks vending machines might be making Chunks on the spot anyway, which would explain why they're everywhere.
You can find an in game box of chunks special sauce on the bloodied table when you are being chased by the Hunter in the sewers leading to the Well.
Its people. Soylent Chunks is people. 🤣
I have been under the impression that Chunks is a fancy 3D printed food that uses some sort of biomass filament that gets that appropriate flavoring to get it close to what it represents. Astronauts have to take supplements for lack of Vit D in our current day and age, with my military background sometimes just a matter of getting something in my belly till later. I do enjoy an MRE or some freeze-dried but needless to say I would probably be into eating a Chunk. With how far into time this is... how we know those foods may be vastly different due to genetics to improve crops.
To be fair, Chunks Cake and Cheesesteak does look good. But how does one eat a Chunk? Knife and fork? Bite it like an apple? All at once? Reconstitute with hot water? Those are real questions.

CHUNKS IS MADE OF PEOPLE!
I like how Bethesda always make so many of their own brands in their games, maybe they’ll be a Chunks DLC 😆
I found it kind of funny that such a highly compressed food would have such wasteful packaging, reminds me of how a lot of products are packaged to increase shelf visibility but just having a tiny object inside like a USB drive
Chunks packaging is made to be displayed on a wall hook. Chunks packaging is made to have a uniform appearance. It is made to have shelf appeal and a high level of brand recognition. It is made specifically not to show off the product. That is a shame, because Chunks actually have a good appearance. Chunks packaging is actually bad for shipping. The Chunks themselves are wonderful tiny cubes that could be super efficiently packaged. The packaging they come in has this huge backing that ruins the wonderful compactness of the product. That huge backing makes it easy to hang from a hook, or put on a store shelf, and easy to recognize from a long distance away. But with that backing the tightest you can pack Chunks is by having 2 of them facing each other and rotated 180 degrees in the case they come in. Without the packaging you'd be able to squeeze about 8 in the same space 2 take up now. And like hell you'd ship these out of a factory without the packaging. All sorts of people would make strange accusations if they knew the finished product was being shipped around outside of the packaging. Marketing nightmare.
Iirc isn't Tau Ceti facilities were originally made for Aceles butchering? Especially with some posters in the place, some lore blurbs about using em for cattle during the war with Freestar, some notes across that quest and the sheer size of some buildings
thank you!

Chunks DLC? On a new Chunks shaped moon? Chunks land? :P
I hope they incldue a questline in future DLCs where you get a golden ticket and the equivalent of Willy Wonka gives you a tour of a Chunks factory and you actually get to see what they're really made of.
I really never interpreted Chunks as anything sinister, it's just Space Food (as in, not meant to substitute real food, it's just meant for consumption in a Zero-G environment), but it's so cheap that many poor or impoverished people can only afford to eat Chunks. Also, it's based around old food that NASA was working on, where food would be dehydrated and pressed into cube form, and then packaged in vacuum sealed bags. The Meal Tray Kits you can find are also based around old NASA food solutions.
Chunks.... sound like a long lost vault experiment...... kinda a lasting homage to the VaultTec Corp.

The name "Chunks" hints at junk food. It's just the generic Starfield version of our modern fast food. Bethesda did something similar in Fallout with Nuka Cola. It was the Fallout version of unhealthy synthetic soft drinks that nobody knows what they are made of. Keeping the ingredients secret is essential for low value, unhealthy, synthetic junk food.
Chunks ofdly enough remind me of White castles its a burger chain, puts its sliders and everything else in dmall boxes
Reminds me of those "Food cubes" in Star Trek the Original Series.

Chunks is what that is leftover of people when sam is finish with them
As a person who inhales food food sustenance, i bet chunks are delicious
How do we know its not a version of Soylent Green😂
It always bothered me that the packaging design for Chunks was so bad. Think about it: the food itself is a well-designed cube for easy storage, but the foil packaging is twice the size it needs to be and makes impossible to stack them efficiently.
I had a question back then, how to eat those? Looking at the block, it is quite big. I would say it is comparatively as big as a BLT sandwich made from two loaves. They're not bite sized. And when I'm looking the customers at the new homestead branch, none of them eating any Chunks. One person eating a literal sandwich, in a Chunks restaurant. Also, you said square for packaging efficiency. But the package cannot be said to be easily stacked on top of each other. Even when i think it maybe L shape like in tetris, it still has some gap at the center if you try to stack two Ls by rotating the other one. So what if they packaged when arrives at the branch restaurant. If it is the case, i also do not think those cubes are able to withstand a lot of weight on top of it without the package. Just imagine that one with the egg. Unless, A. They transported as liquids. Heated to remove the water content, then add toppings, packaged. B. Or bulk solids. Add water, toppings, packaged when arrives. If they still consider packaging ergonomics.
We need a expanded DLC dedicated to a Chunks backstory !!

Chunks give off that iguana bits or squirrel on a stick vibe from fallout games. Im sure its just supposed to be a flavored "nutrient" cube so it might not be anything sketchy at all but who knows since the factories and corporate buildings seem to be non-existent in the game. _screams in Detective Robert Thorn_
Chunks is Mc Donald's right or taco bell! I never read the books in the game, I have all you good folks on KZread for that! I always wondered about this- thanks for the intel now i know-, Peace
Imo it’s probably similar to what Warhammer 40k calls “Soylens Varidian”, a tasteless texture less nutrient/food paste that is made from all imaginable sources of organic matter. Given that food is likely pretty scarce (given the high prices of fresh foods), that is the most reasonable option

Soylent Green is people
Idk if it would give any further hints towards a possible dark secret for the Chunks corporation, but under the Lodge in New Atlantis there's an entrance to The Well that leads through a small sewer area into a room with either blood or Chunks Sauce splattered across a table, with the door leading beyond that inaccessible. It's entirely possible that this area is for a story mission I've just not done yet, but I figured I'd mention it anyways.

@@Dino2GunZ considering there are squirrel on a stick food items in Fallout 3, I'd say squirrel bits also came from squitrels. Strange Meat on the otherhand? That comes from humans. It's often found in the inventories of Leather Armored Hunters(there are two types of Hunter npcs, ones that wear leather armor, and ones that wear wasteland settler outfits). In the town of Andale there's a shack out behined one house and a basement beneath another. In both locations, you can not only find Strange Meat, you'll also find human remains.

@GBRyker61 it's the same thing I think fudge Muppet or maybe oxhorn did a vid explaining the lore it's all human meat
I’m honestly shocked the video was a lead up to…. nothing. I fully expected you to say it was a soylent green situation at any given moment.
Chunks are Soylent Green...
THE CHUNKS ARE PEOPLE!!!!
Look under the lodge by the door to the well you will find a table covered in blood and a special chunks product on the table
Chunks probably are just a tofu equivalent turned into fast food/space travel convenient food with indefinite shelf life. Soybeans wouldnt be that hard to grow comparatively, especially with more widespread hydroponics. Given the commercial arena of starfield, you could probably buy large amounts of land on mulitple planets with suitable enough conditions without too many hiccups outside of random alien creatures, or pirates as a worst case. Of the settled systems its also the only fast food joint i can think of, so easy monopoly.
Just pink paste cubes given cutesy looks to encourage consumption.
