What EVERY Christian should know about Tradition w/ Dr.Edith Humphrey

#Orthodoxy #Christ #Tradition #Apostolic
In some of the church's history, Scripture has been pitted against tradition and vice versa. What does the bible say about Tradition? How should we view it? On this episode of The Transfigured Life, we are met with Prominent New Testament scholar Dr. Edith Humphrey, who tackles the perspective of the Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox understanding of Tradition. She mentions the challenges of the non-orthodox views of Tradition and how the early Church and the Orthodox today have properly understood and preserved that understanding.

For more on this topic, Dr. Edith Humphrey goes through various views in Catholicism and Protestant communities (including Anglican and Methodist) and compares these with each other and with the Orthodox mindset, with more detail than this discussion. Saint Cosmas of Aetolos preaches: "I read about priests, and about impious, heretical and atheists; I searched the depths of wisdom; all faiths are false; this I understood to be true, that only the faith of orthodox Christians is good and holy , to believe and be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This I say to you now in the end: rejoice where you are orthodox Christians, and weep for the impious and heretical who walk in darkness

As far as the 'by whose authority ' topic, as someone who was formerly Protestant and now Orthodox, when you hold to sola Scriptura, you are then saying that you yourself are the authority. There is no getting around that fact.

Good video. I would disagree with her interpretation of the Catholic view on Sacred Tradition and Scripture. We certainly consider the view of elevating aesthetic or form to the level of sacred tradition if it holds no affirmation from the Magisterium clarifying how the aesthetic and form comprise Sacred Tradition, else fall into a for of idolatry. So we see Sacred Tradition, Scripture, and Thr Magisterium WITH the Pope as the foundation of our faith.

Yes, and it’s also as if we wouldn’t ask if this or that conflict with Scripture (@32:44) when in fact we do, and it’s a concern that she doesn’t seem to know that. Also I was curious to see what doctrine she thinks Catholics added but finally it’s just the papacy, really. Because the truth is Catholics never added anything that wasn’t already there in one form or another. Interesting that it comes down to the big difference between Catholics and Orthodox (besides the Filioque).

Tradition is a delivery. Deliver the delivery is like ‘mailing the mail’. We get hung up on the word tradition and it’s a flawed English translation.

"Tradition" is a perfectly good translation of paradidomi and paradosis. It is the pejorative connotation given to it by some Protestants that is flawed. And Tradition is not simply delivery but also reception: it is a two-way process.

@@edithmhumphrey2254 this is true. Unfortunately the taint given by Protestants has ruined it. It’s almost like we need to go back to the Greek & school them- which you did here- and give a full lesson on the Greek text. Even the notion of ‘something delivered & received’ seems to be lost w/ protestants. The same root word was used when Christ was ‘delivered’ to Pilate. The word ‘parade’ comes from the same root & It gives a very visual image. Protestants- when taking all different sects into account- have so many different ‘traditions’ & you did a good job of explaining them. The Revival movement tried to return to ‘the original’ but ended up with even more- SDA,JW, COC, Mormons, etc. Now Hebrew roots is another. Boggles the mind.

This is why defending tradition as authority always seems sus. They spent a bunch of time on how the written word can be corrupted or misinterpreted. With the written word we know what changed and we can go back to verify if someone abused the scripture. With tradition you can’t. Every argument against the written word can be used against tradition and it is ten times worse for tradition. Every time tradition is argued there is lots of equivocation of the use of the term tradition. She mentions the different usages of tradition and then proceeds to not distinguish them most of her talk. Yes, there are positive usages of tradition in the Bible, but all are in context of their present time. When Jesus talks about traditions what is he talking about? Man made traditions that are added to the scriptures, these he describes as a burden and they can even take people away from God. Many of the traditions of today are clearly man made and in addition to the written word.

"They spent a bunch of time on how the written word can be corrupted or misinterpreted." Where did we spend a bunch of time discussing the corruption of the written text? "To an Orthodox Christian, Tradition means the Holy Bible; it means the Creed; it means the decrees of the Ecumenical Councils and the writings of the Fathers; it means the Canons, the Service Books, the Holy Icons, etc. In essence, it means the whole system of doctrine, ecclesiastical government, worship and art which Orthodoxy has articulated over the ages [Timothy Ware, The Orthodox Church, p.204]." Tradition is easy to defend because it has been taught by the Fathers and is a historical reality. What's "sus" is those that reject it yet call themselves Christian.

@@airpodman1259 Why? Because the Church has been infiltrated from within. By whom exactly? Well, I will leave that up to you to investigate. They had tried for centuries without success. After World War 2, things changed though. It is still the One True Church (The Seat of Peter) run by a few corrupt men. Hence there are Bishops and Cardinals leaving and organising their own traditional masses that stay true to Sacred Tradition. So, yes I am a traditionalist, not a fan of modernism in the Church. the New Testament wasn't compiled together until 325 A.D. by the Orthodox Church :) They were just letters and separate books. And even in 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (NKJV) it says: 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our [a]epistle. (which means that not all traditions were written down in the letters, but were taught by word of mouth)
