****************
"The long awaited sequel to the PlayStation game Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was released on November 13th, 2001. MGS2 does not star the former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake. Instead, Hideo Kojima took players into the mind of super soldier Raiden, a stealth operative on his first live combat scenario. His objective is to stop a group of terrorists, calling themselves the Sons of Liberty. This includes blowing up a large oil cleanup facility and killing the President of the United States.
MGS2's innovations included its introduction of the laser sight mechanic for more accurate aiming, and a refined cover system that allowed both players and enemies to shoot from cover. It also introduced collective enemy AI routines that relied on squad tactics rather than working individually, while individual enemies expressed fear and even birds had their own AI routines. MGS2 was considered to have the best enemy AI in gaming for many years. The physics was also a major step forward for gaming, particularly the sophisticated particle effects for its time (including for individual drops of rain) and the way objects moved.
The game earned both critical and commercial acclaim upon release, with the highest sales and review scores in the series. However, the game's convoluted story, excessive use of Codec conversations and new protagonist Raiden was criticized by a number of fans, temporarily relegating him to a joke character (even with Kojima himself) until his popular transformation in Metal Gear Solid 4.
Despite the controversy surrounding the unexpected bait-and-switch and convoluted storyline at the time, Sons of Liberty is today seen as a landmark title in the history of video games. It is considered the first truly postmodern video game, is frequently cited as a primary example of artistic expression in video games, and is generally considered one of the most influential games of the past decade, both for its artistic influence on later video game storylines (most notably Eternal Darkness, Killer7, Portal, and especially BioShock, which even featured a very similar plot twist) as well as its influence on the gameplay mechanics of many action games since."

Will never forget beating this game on Thanksgiving Day in 2002 with my dad sitting there watching all the cutscenes with me. My mom walked into the den during a codec scene where Colonel was rambling about La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo and said “what the fuck kind of game is this?” and my dad and I fell out laughing because even then at the time we didn’t even know what we were witnessing. Playing through these games in my late 20s right now and I’m only here to say Kojima is the Tarantino of the gaming industry

Mgs, especially 2 and 3 basically defined me as a young adult. I was influenced heavily by 3, it was the last game I played before my mom died, played through3 in its entirety during a really bad flu during Christmas break in 2004(2005?) I'll never forget how impactful MGS was to me as a child, with the NES games, as a 10/11 year old with MGS1, a young teen with MGS2, a young adolescent with MGS3, never got to play MGS4 until adulthood, so maybe it had less of an influence on me; I'll always be partial to the first 3 games on the ps1/ps2. Thanks so much for making these videos

I love your other content, but sometimes I feel that you focus so strongly on the thematic significance and real life similarities of the games that the actual events and plot of the games gets neglected a little bit. Regardless, it's all great! Keep it up:)

@@JunkyardHounds potentially. I didn't feel the same impact from V but I understand a lot of the meta narrative and subtext. I think it will be very hard for people to get over the way the game launched incomplete and the whole drama between konami/kojima.

@@o-redbeard-o1036 Except the game didn't launch incomplete and that's part of it's theme. The whole game features repetition and lack of wholeness on a narrative, thematic and gameplay level. That's no fluke. The game is 100% complete. Also, by logic, when you have no time to complete a game it won't be a polished work. The first thing to do is write the plot and the cutscenes were almost all shown 2 to 3 years before the game came out. How does that feel incomplete to you ? That's one of the sad things about the game, people not being able to see it for what it is but that was, imo, kojima's aim.

@@JunkyardHounds I understand that part of the message 100%. However I personally believe Kojima wasn't allowed to finish it the way he intended. He went over budget and over the alloted time frame. I think the meta narrative of all the things you mentioned came afterwards. I don't think that takes anything away from it I just personally believe it happened in a different order. Again like I stated I am fully aware of all of that.

@@o-redbeard-o1036 I disagree. Watch interviews from 2010/2011 and what Kojima says about his next project. He didn't went over budget nor over the alloted time frame unless you count the development of Fox engine. The fallout was probably due to him making the game the way it's made. Like skullface says "The anti-metal gear metal gear". MGS2 contradicts all of MG1's tropes and V takes it even further.

So Snake is coming from Upper Manhattan, walking to Fort Lee NJ while timing his fast rope descent to the tanker. As the tanker is passing by Hudson County NJ as well as Manhattan, it also passes by Bayonne NJ and going by Staten Island.

Anyone that played the series in order knows what actually is going on the tanker mission setup the big shell and it was a simulation created by the patriots to reawaken Raiden so he can kill his mentor solids aka George sears this entire simulation is based on the metal gear solid game but there was one thing the patriots failed to calculate the response of solid snake himself thanks to snake and Raiden the attack on the big shell was resolved and Ray Ray away setting up metal gear solid 4 Raidens passed came back X10 and he went dark and came back as lightning in metal gear solid 4 leaving rose and his child unprotected from the patriots which is why toy Campbell married rose to shield her and her child I can continue on this was type before the opening so yeah

Factually? It's not quite clear what really happened, as the story later on alludes that "Tanker" chapter might be a by-Patriots-altered-chain of events, turned VR mission for rookies like Raiden. Afteral, I have always found it somewhat questionable how Snake went into this so ill-prepared.
