With nothing but a provisional driving license, I passed my driving test aged 21 in 1979 at Hyde Road Manchester, driver training centre, in a Route Master. The following week I was driving buses in service, out of Frederick Road bus garage, with 70 passengers on board. Madness, but we all survived.

There were also Scanias. I've driven RMs, RMLs and RMCs, all with different engines, including AV590s, AV690s, and whatever they put in RM6 to make it sound like a first-generation Dennis Dart.... RM5 was always my favourite to drive, but RM1000 also holds a special place in my heart.

I've had a spin in three Swifts with 760 engines and didn't find them that powerful. They needed to wind up a bit to get to the torque, unlike a Leyland 0680 which had pulling power from the get go and didn't need much revving in general. The 760 was very smooth though and wiped the floor on many more modern engines in that regard.

@@tonys1636 Sydney had a lot of smaller private bus companies in it's huge metropolitan area and Leopards were still in wide use until the early 2000s, wheras there were only a couple of late build AEC Swifts with one company remaining in route bus use until 2000. By the early 1990s all AEC Reliances were a memory except for a couple with two companies being used for school runs and shuttles respectively. The Leopards were considered reliable, some even receiving new bodies in the early 1990s. I must add, Leyland parts were much easier to obtain by the 1990s than AEC. Ive had AEC and Leyland engined RMs. Both types are original to Routemasters, so your introduction is incorrect. I found the Leyland the most responsive pulling away, but AEC best cruising along. My present RM has a Scania replacement engine. Has the same throaty roar as original AEC units. This, with a mid-speed diff fitted, makes my RM a hoot to drive, cruising over 50mph (fast for a Routemaster). Iveco and Cummins sound more like a light truck approaching, no real roar like an RM should have.
