What does the Word of Wisdom teach about Identity

The Word of Wisdom is often described as a health code to keep members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints free from addictive substances. While that is true, the Word of Wisdom might also be telling us something about our identity and how God wants us to look at ourselves and others.

I was in the Air Force when I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I began explaining the Word of Wisdom when I was asked why I don’t drink coffee or alcohol. I said that we have a standard in our home that if it is not good for our children then it is not good for us. Then I would ask them if they would give coffee or alcohol or allow the children to watch rated R movies. They would always respond positively and respect my choices.

That is a great explanation on the word of wisdom. I think I'm going to use your explanation next time. My son talks about eating healthy and trying to drink good food all the time. I asked him, isn't that counter productive whenever you smoke and drink but then try to eat healthy, it makes no sense to me. Smoking and drinking will teardown the body even though you eat good food, counterproductive.. tempering alcohol has caused a lot of grief in his life even a lot of money, but not in prison yet. I told him if he's going to live this lifestyle then he has to reap the benefits, so enjoy your stay in jail. One time he asked me to bail him out of jail, I said to go ahead and enjoy your stay there you worked really hard to get here so enjoy your stay. At least they will feed you behind bars and you can catch up on your rest. It took him a little while to get over that Madness. Now he tells me, he understands now. This way everyone has a choice in the matter. Myself I like to give everyone the opportunity to make a decision, whether it be yay or nay. This way no one can ever say, you were the one that held my life in your hands. Everyone has the right to go their own way. Even one heart and one mind in Christ.

Interesting. I have been thinking along these lines recently. I watched a FAIR conference address by Greg Smith on plural marriage. He talked about a principle called “moderate tension.” Polygamy provided the early saints this moderate tension between them and the world. It separated them and forced them to rely on each other and form a more united identity. Without this, the saints would have never been motivated enough or United enough to cross the country to the west! Modernly, the word of wisdom provides this “moderate tension” separating us from the world. It’s part of what makes us a “peculiar people.” It sets us apart and unites us together helping us form an identity not so attached to the world. It makes us different and has played a huge rule in our modern lds culture.

I don't worry with people that drink and tattoos. If I sit down to eat and gently others will come join me. I do my thing and they do theirs. I make it known ahead of time, I don't mess with drugs alcohol smoking whatever. If you walk with the spirit daily the spirit attracts people and they are curious to ask why you stand out. The spirit radiates the love of Christ around you just like the candle on the mantle. I only go there to work not to visit. You will always attract someone that will stop and visit. We choose what we are going to do everyday, either fight against the flesh or stay focused on Christ. You don't always have to speak or hang out together, the spirit will teach everyone when the time is right. Dropped your seeds wherever you go and whoever you speak with, you done your job. Relax and have patience the time will come for you to teach them. The people in the church have basically 1 vocabulary and it stands out even when you say things you are teaching and not know it. Before you start your day have a prayer and ask the Lord to lead the way, especially when I speak. I don't have any trouble picking out a member of the church after I speak with people. It's not like we have a tattoo or a red flag on our head just so we stand out

@@ctr653 the word of wisdom is not a commandment, it's only for our good healthy. Exercise if possible, eat food that is good for you and breathe clean air. All of the food and health requirements is the word of wisdom, it is really the word to the wise. Our bodies will tell us what is not good. It's just that the doctor will tell you not to smoke drink or tobacco and stay away from illegal or Pharmaceuticals that are harmful like getting a allergic reaction and many other things because they are harmful to your health also. We only do the best we can and if we have habits we can always ask the Lord to help us and strengthen us to overcome . Our weakness can become a strength , then we can help others to overcome . This will strengthens our own character and motivation to do what is right for our bodies because these bodies is all that we have. The Lord only asked us to take care of the body we were given so we are only to do your best. The Lord is always eager to help us even if we lose our car keys or cell phones. If you think about it, everyone has some type of addiction with the flash or body desires. Through prayer repentance and even Scriptures Daily and being gratefulness is not a commandment. It only brings good health for the heart mind and soul. We need to always ask for strength and understanding constantly in our prayers. You will be amazed what you will receive from our Lord Jesus Christ. Doom and Gloom is not part of Christ but happiness and joy with peace cleanses the mind from Christ. One great thing is, you recognize that you are not active and that is Heavenly scent directly to you and to us all. I know from my own experience, it seems like morality will bring on guilt and stop us from going to church because we don't want to feel guilty in church. This is one of the tools the adversary uses to keep us from going to church, because it seems everyone is looking at us but that's only what the adversary tells each of us in our own mind among other things. One main requirement is that we are kind to ourselves. Your mind and heart controls that portion on how nice you want to be to yourself and others. It's not a commandment but it's very healthy. I know you probably already know these things, we all need reminders. Just like the doctor would tell you, eating healthy is the best policy. The Lord blessed us with one of the greatest gifts and that is repentance. Repentance is His gift to us for happiness and peace! Whatever you do please don't waste this gift but not using it. It doesn't matter if you're a repeat offender, continue to repent. The more we repent, the faster your prayers and understanding will be fulfilled if we will just ask. Thank you for sharing.

I love your videos. I also love many of the points in this video. The main disagreement I have is that the word of wisdom gives us a common identity. I say this because 99.95% of ACTIVE members of the church do not live the word of wisdom. Nor do they understand it. It has been bastardized to mean abstinence from coffee, tea, drugs, alcohol and for the absolute white washed tombs, abstinence from caffeine. The word of wisdom is so much more than that. I don't understand our weird obsession with the "Do Nots" and taking pride in them while most members I see in the pews definitely cannot run and not be weary and take all kinds of pharmaceuticals that are equally dangerous to treat the symptoms of their incredibly unhealthy lifestyle. As a church, we need a complete reset of what we consider to be the word of wisdom. Not a reset in the revelation, but of our understanding and application. I think it has become one of the greatest stumbling blocks of the Church of Jesus Christ.

He wants us to spread the gospel . we need to be sure of our identity and who we are as we go out into the world... to befriend those that need it and help those that are struggling...

Thank you for the different perspective on how the Word of Wisdom helps us maintain our identity. The way you phrased it made me think a lot of The Family: A Proclamation to the world which very much focuses on our eternal identity. I would say the latter has more logical reasoning behind it. Why was the WoW later amended to have such specific examples? If it was always intended to be clarified later, why has it not been added to again? If the meaning wasn’t intended to be health wise, what spiritual reason is there behind the specific things chosen? The Word of Wisdom is one of the few things next to denying people of color the Priesthood that continues to baffle me even after receiving explanations. I’ve been a member my whole life and hope this doesn’t come off poorly. Thank you for the video regardless of my opinions.

The Word of Wisdom is the only commandment from God in which he does not command us in all things. You must decide on caffeine, taking your prescription drugs, how much meat to eat, how many meals a day, portion size and much more. Most of our problems health wise in the US, stems from no minerals in our soil, fertilizers, processed food, fast food, sugar and healthcare being subsidized by the government etc. We are eating ourselves to death. This law is designed to get us to think for ourselves and for us to use science to determine what is safe or not for medicine. Remember the symbol of medicine goes back to Moses casting his staff on the ground because the Jews would not look and be saved. The priesthood is spiritual and medicine is physical when it comes to body health. Hence we need to stop focusing on the donts and focus on what would Jesus tell us about the do’s and potential donts. So not taking doctor prescribed medication is against the Word of Wisdom as much as excessive eating of food or meat. Think of the consequences from the do’s and donts.

I really enjoyed this one. I haven’t seen that many of your videos coming out recently until the last couple of weeks. As an addendum, I’d like to add something to what you covered in this video. The conspiring evil men are actually the reason why the word of wisdom is so important because one of the things they are trying to do is to disrupt our bodies by means of Engineered substances, that include alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea, and of course, soft drinks, but they have taken it a step further and done something even more abominable, which is to interfere with the food and water supply by adding things and bio engineering everything that we need to just stay alive. as a result, you see men and women becoming more androgynous, or at the very least, less masculine and less feminine, therefore not natural sons, and daughters of God. Our bodies are being tampered with. This is absolutely wicked. Fortunately, our spirits are strong enough to overcome some of the shortcomings of our physical bodies but we have to make good choices in what we eat and drink as well, premature aging, susceptibility to diseases, overall poor health… All part of being an American. When I lived overseas years ago, I was in much better physical condition than I am now that I have come back to the United States. Why? Because in the United States, we are the world‘s largest population of experimental lab animals. Large corporate entities, and the military and medical industrial complex are having their wicked ways with all of us. No point in me holding back I’m just speaking the truth. As far as what it says in the book of Mormon, a wonderful thing about, yes is that if you are at least trying to stick to the word of wisdom, you do indeed receive treasures of knowledge. It’s my understanding that having narrow to your bones means that you’re less likely to get cancer. Running without painting is self-explanatory. Walking without becoming weary. Also self-explanatory but as an extension it means you’re less likely to have heart issues that would get in the way of you being able to physically exercise strenuously. it also makes our body a more pure vessel and a better conduit for the Holy Spirit, which is a good thing

Remember when everyone ran out to get an experimental vaccine that was supposed to make them immune to covid? But then two shots turned into getting boosters for the rest of our lives? Tattoos and smoking are easy to notice and therefore judge others by. Other vices are more hidden. Although to some degree, you can look at people and know who they vote for, party wise, even that is meaningless. Also, the Word of Wisdom is the only major commandment from God in which he has not commanded us in all things. The Lord lets us you are agency to determine things not in it both good and bad and the quantity and quality of what we partake of. Only the don’ts are on the temple recommend questions but during the millennium we will not be eating meat. Too many members think the Word of Wisdom violations are worse than chastity. Nonsense. What the Word of Wisdom, Chasity and tattoos have in common is they affect the physical body. They are not the same as what we say and do from actions not related to the above mentioned items. That doesn’t mean we aren’t responsible or that it doesn’t affect our body, but we choose what we do with our body, by thought, action or words.

What drink is made from barley that isn’t beer? Seriously? Hot drinks? The pamphlet JS got the wording from (look it up) was from a group pushing healthy eating. JS got revelation every time he was asked a question but todays prophets can’t seem to answer a question like “where did the BoM take place” or questions about heavenly mother etc etc.

I think you are missing the entire point of the WoW. Of course God wants his people to be separate from the world. However there are many ways this can be done, and the WoW is certainly not one of them. Specifically, the WoW says wine should be used in the sacrament, and beer (mild barley drinks) can be used. It doesn't say anything about becoming a separate people. Honestly, today the LDS church is much more in line with the world than it used to be.

@@JD-pr1et The reason I wrote what I did wasn't out of ignorance but to indicate that the WoW was originally for HOT FOODS. Back in Joseph's day (early to mid 1800) they cooked food in dutch ovens OVER AN OPEN FIRE. These extremely hot foods would burn the lining of your stomach eventually causing stomach cancers. Did you know the WoW also included soups, stews, porrage, hot cocoa...ANYTHING HOT FROM OVER THE FIRE. Once 'stoves and ovens' came into use, the heat could be regulated. Fire hot foods were no longer an issue, so the WoW was trimmed waaaay down to just include coffee and tea (still served piping hot hence the ban). No one has ever died from drinking coffee or tea (unless from consuming the beverage too hot), but 9 BYU students have died from chugging highly caffienated energy drinks...which are allowable...because they aren't 'hot'. Also early pics of the 'Celestial' room in the SLC shows ashtrays and spitoons. We know the SLC temple took 40 years to build. So members got to do their own thing... smoke, chew without repercussion for 40 yrs and to them the WoW really wasn't a big deal. But in modern times it is a 'quasi-commandment' when food storage IS ACTUAL COMMANDMENT but do they ask about that at Temple recommends? The D&C says we can use those things with 'PRUDENCE AND THANKSGIVING' but the majority of Mormies can't do that. They can't control themselves, they are weak. That's why I wrote what I did. Personally I don't care if someone smokes or drinks coffee... but I do care if they will be able to take care of their family when SHTF.
