When I was a kid, I grew up in San Diego and the Hello Kitty store there was called “Sanrio,” so that’s where I thought it got it’s name… I thought it was a San Diego/So-cal thing. 😅😊 Even though I knew Hello Kitty was Japanese I thought Sanrio was specifically a Southern California thing, since that’s the only place I’ve seen Sanrio stores. This was obviously before most people had access to the internet, and long before pretty much everything was branded with Hello Kitty. I got my plush Keroppi (a huge novelty in those days) at the original Sanrio store in California! 💖🐸 [Edit: I started writing my comment before you mentioned Sanrio’s connections to California, so I’m glad to know I was actually right! I knew there was a California connection to the original Sanrio store there, since it was a pretty big deal, back in the day! It’s so hard to make younger people realize just how rare it was for Sanrio characters to appear on anything other than stationary, back then. The fact that they had Sanrio plush and candy there (I also had Keroppi candy dispenser that I got at the Sanrio store) absolutely blew me away as a kid! While I still love Sanrio products… It’s just not the same experience buying things in stores, when pretty much every store carries some Sanrio products, and when the same things are so easily available online.]
