What Does Red Hat Want?

Ғылым және технология

While Red Hat is the primary sponsor of the Fedora and CentOS Projects, internally, there is a bit of a split-brain syndrome where we separate our sponsorship from our wants and goals. This talk will focus on what Red Hat is thinking about when it looks at participation in the Fedora and CentOS Projects. Like all contributors, Red Hat has shown up to "scratch its own itch." So what are those itches? Let's explore some together.

@@fedora Some decisions on part of Fedora seem confusing. Like in Fedora38 the support for Nvidia drivers was removed and users who upgraded from fedora37 to Fedora 38, were left with a black screen. While Arch has also done this before (the grub fiasco), they are a community project. But Fedora is part community and part paid by RHEL, so I expect better quality control. Upstream doesn't mean "fill in the gap" which what whitespace means

If you find any code in RHEL that is not upstream or in CentOS Stream, please let us know - it's a bug. You seem to be angry about what the media told you Red Hat did and not what Red Hat actually did. We are still sending all of our code upstream, all of RHEL is available in CentOS Stream. Red Hat isn't keeping any code private.

"Alumni RedHat" @BenCotton. Nice comment, shouldn't have deleted it. It's kinda funny. When Richard Stallman got cancelled, Fedora jumped in. When RedHat decides to f* over the entire open source community; not a single peep from you guys. Just a single public statement saying that you "don't support these actions" would've been enough. I've been using Fedora since 2012/2013, and I've always recommended it for new peeps starting out on Linux. Now it'll be OpenSUSE or Debian.

@@kristiannyfjell8097 Not being the guy to defend billionaires and giant corporations, but a company doing bad business decisions and a man in position of power doing terrible things and having to face the consequences of his actions are NOT the same thing. Also it's funny to see people still talking about his "cancelling" as if he actually had to face any consequences. He's still in the same position of power, people just pretended nothing happened after a while. As it always happens in cases like this. Fedora as a community took the right stance in demanding he faced consequences.

@daimarstein Calling out bad/shitty behaviour is the common theme. The reason it was important for Fedora to speak out on it (even just a small "we do not condone the actions") is because Fedora is outspoken when it comes to the OpenSource community. When IBM/RedHat decided to hamfist the OpenSource community, Fedora decided that RedHat is our papa, and we cannot criticise them. This displays you cannot trust Fedora to stand up against the tyranny of their Enterprise boss. It makes me chuckle when Oracle is trying to take the business of RedHat, like anyone in the OpenSource community trust them. Also, not that it matters, but everyone will remember Stallman's name with an asterisk. What he did will leave a stain on the legacy of fsf and the gnu project. I cannot say his name without a sour taste.
