I started with my mentor putting me in for daily and cat with another firm, I did 4 deployments before I took a Pilot deployment for Hurricane Sally. If I didn't have the mentor, I would have loved to start with pilot. I'm currently on my second Pilot deployment, heading to my third.

Actual Cash Value is not the amount that you paid for your property but rather the amount you would need to buy the same property today minus depreciation, if your property was not new and you hsve had it for some years. At the time of the loss, the newer your property is, the closer the actual cash value is to the cost to replace.

ACV in laments term is Fair Market Value. However, that would also depend on the property. Auto loss would use a formula, cost of repair/replacement - depreciated value = ACV, I believe. :) Not an adjuster, but I am an agent, planning to be an adjuster! ;)

I usually explain ACV and RCV in the context of a new car sale and depreciation as soon as its driven off the lot, i.e. What it's worth now, not brand new. If the insured had an ACV policy only, I would explain that the settlement they are receiving is the depreciation only and not the total amount. I'd explain it a little more in depth but that's the gist of it when explaining it to someone with no insurance experience.

I usually say, "this is sorta the used car price - we pay what it's worth right now and then when the work is completed, we pay the full amount" Something like that.

Ok, I’m freshly licensed with Florida as my DHS. I’m a Kansas resident. I’ve been managing a contracting company for 7 years doing full Inspections, xactimate scopes, insurance negotiations, managing and scheduling all repairs and dealing with homeowners and crews in English and Spanish.... Ive never walked anything over a 6/12 pitch. I feel like it’s not worth the risk. And I could always tell from a ladder how bad the damage was especially if I moved The ladder all over the house to check multiple areas. MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: Can I tell carriers that I won’t do steep roofs? Or will that basically kill my odds of deployment?!?!?

Actual cash value = purchasing x item that is used. Replacement Cost Value = amount needed to purchase x item new. I first explain to an insured the two step payment system, ACV amount and when the work is complete we will send the depreciation (RCV) amount. I like to ask an insured what hobbies they are into to help explain. Example being a golfer.. ACV amount is like buying a 5 year old set of Titleist golf clubs, so as of this moment I will write you a check or e-payment to help put a down payment on a new set of clubs or purchase a 5 year old set of clubs. After you purchase a new set of Titleist clubs we pay you the difference. If we will provide you up to $1,000 dollars to purchase a new set of clubs and you purchase a new set for a hundred dollars less.. that’s what we will pay you for your new clubs. $900.

@Gayle Lynch They do if it's explained in a way that let's them see that it's just part of the process. I focus less on trying to get them to understand depreciation and more on "this is how claims are paid - we pay in two payments and depreciation is how we figure out how to split the payment.. just complete the work and the full amount will be sent to you." For a lot of people (most really) they don't want to have anything extra out of pocket so when we talk about depreciation, what they hear is, "actually, it's going to COST you even more than your deductible!" So I reassure them that contractors aren't going to ask for everything up front. And I let them know that contractors deal with insurance companies all the time and understand how this works. So the long and short of it is that what we're really trying to do is alleviate a fear. People are afraid that the stories they hear about insurance companies trying to weasel out of paying claims is true. The idea of depreciation doesn't help that - but we can head that fear off at the pass if we see it for what it is and address the FEAR instead of trying to get them to understand some fairly arbitrary and technical concept like depreciation..
