What Does Lyme Disease Do To Your Body?

Ғылым және технология

What exactly is the connection between a tick bite and lyme disease? While we’re not sure exactly where and when the disease originated, we do know a lot about how it works, its signs, its symptoms in humans and dogs, how it’s spread and its treatment.

SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

History of Lyme Disease
www.bayarealyme.org/about-lym...
"Ticks and Lyme disease have been around for thousands of years. In fact, a recent autopsy on a 5,300-year-old mummy indicated the presence of the bacteria which causes Lyme disease. A German physician, Alfred Buchwald, first described the chronic skin rash, or erythema migrans, of what is now known to be Lyme disease more than 130 years ago. However, Lyme disease was only recognized in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. And the bacteria that causes it - Borrelia burgdorferi - wasn’t officially classified until 1981."

Diagnosed about 2 weeks after symptoms started, 2 week course of antibiotics and leg up for a few days so help manage the swelling. I was fine within 5 days or so but finished my treatment as you're meant to. The NHS was incredible because I could barely walk by the time I got to the hospital due to pain from the swelling. Been fine ever since.

    I've been living with Lyme's disease for a little over a year now... Got bit by a tick in the park with my dog, had a huge bullseye, no idea what it was until a colleague urged me to see a doctor. I wasn't worried as I heard most of the time nothing happens and antibiotics do the job. 3 weeks of antibiotics didn't do the job. I'm officially chronic now and it's slowly getting worst. I get sick with awful flu like symptoms every single time I travel or am a bit stressed or cold or anything, get migraines, lose focus, sometimes wakeup with extreme weakness. It has made me very depressed, I used to be so healthy and now feel like ive aged 20 years... And there is nothing I can do about it. :(

    The Fur Monsters, very sorry you have Lyme Disease. Hope you have a good Lyme Literate MD ("LLMD") to help you tame your Lyme into remission, at least. 3 weeks of antibiotics has never worked for anyone with Lyme, that I've met or talked with, or read about! It's just not how Lyme works...for example, I took several antibiotics for many years, along with many other "alternative" (herbal) therapies & a gluten/sugar/meat/dairy-free diet...and it took me YEARS of hard work to get my Lyme into a remission-like state... and I still do get sick when intensely stressed or if someone I love dies, etc...It sucks, but I try to manage it best I am able. I hope that you can find help. It is out there, if you look for a good LLMD. Best wishes to you & your dog, too.

    Lyme Disease can be very debilitating. Here in British Columbia the medical community wouldn't acknowledge its existence, so people that contracted it would not be treated and suffered terribly. Only one doctor would treat affected people, and his medical license was revoked for doing so. If you become infected, get treatment right away and make sure they give high doses of antibiotics. Failure to do so can cause the disease to become chronic.

  • @yaelwolfsong4616

    @yaelwolfsong4616

    5 жыл бұрын

    It is the same in the USA and some other countries.... many doctors may be aware of Lyme & are not allowed to acknowledge or treat it....especially the Emergency Medicine doctors, unfortunately. We have to seek out good "Lyme Literate MDs" and travel great distances to them....often moving to live near them, just to survive. Many do not live. Many commit suicide and their Lyme Disease is never recorded. Do whatever it takes.... yes...if you get a tick bite, SAVE THE TICK in a ziplock baggie, and send it for testing.... there are several places that test for free or a small fee, some charge more. ALWAYS obtain Doxycycline for adults that have been bitten, however you can obtain it....especially if you have acne (?) the doctors love to prescribe doxy for acne...(ahem!). Several weeks is barely enough for an initial infection....get yourself to a good Lyme literate Dr if you are bitten by a tick! Good advice, thank you, Robert Zanatta!!!

Doctors who use it says it is the best thing known for Lyme, and it’s co-infections, and it actually helps mitochondrial & immune function etc. unlike antibiotics which wreck both & cause major chronic co-infections in so many cases. I agree! However, if you suspect mold or Lyme, get tested!!! I’ve had it all starting with getting breast implants 19 years ago. It took 12 years to find out about the illnesses they can cause, and by that time I had to retire from my teaching job because I couldn’t think clearly, lost friends and family, a 20 year relationship, tons of money, etc., all because no one knew and thought I was on drugs. I’ve been susceptible to everything since then.

    It's kind of too simplified if you state the reasoning not injecting humans with the protein is because humans aren't deer. Humans aren't cows either yet one of the earliest vaccines (which was against smallpox) was derived from smallpox in cows and yes I know that vaccines and protein injection are not similar but that is not the point here, the point is here simply that explaining it in this way may leave out some essential information.

  • @k-ro8639

    @k-ro8639

    Seems like they would test the deer protein on mice, or other rodents that have Lyme. They test everything else on mice. The medical community has left so many people suffering. I contracted Lyme in 2005, and continue to have bouts of being so sick, that I can barely put one foot in front of the other. The Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University will not see patients with Lyme. They are a research hospital, so you would expect that they would be studying Lyme, and accepting Lyme patients. My PCP tried to get me in there in 2005, but they would not see me. I got home, in disbelief, and found an infectious disease doctor at MCV. I e-mailed her, and within a half-hour she answered me, and confirmed that they did not see Lyme patients. She said that Lyme disease mimics so many other diseases, and that it is called "The Great Imitator". That was my first dead-end in my fight with Lyme. I ended up seeing an infectious disease doctor, about five years into Lyme. She was very concerned and wanted to treat my with IV antibiotics. She called the CDC to make the report (as required), and they would not allow her to treat me. Come to find out, a doctor in NC who had been treating Lyme patients with IV antibiotics, lost his medical degree. It was a big deal, going through the Courts. Doctors act like they do not even want to hear the word "Lyme". I think word has gotten around about the doctor losing his license, so the medical community just sends you home. It makes me feel like I am just sitting here, waiting to die. It is so depressing, and isolating. I feel like I have the flu, without a fever. Study after study, and none of them tells anyone how to treat Lyme. It is a joke, and so frustrating. Here is this doctor stating that "humans are not deer". Thanks a lot. I would have never known. That is the exact reason why so many people are suffering. Doctors just put you off. They want to diagnose you in one minute, give you a prescription, and send you on your way. They are not educated in Lyme Disease, and make you feel like you are a hypochondriac. My last bout started in November 2019, and I have not left my house that entire time. I am so disgusted with doctors, that I no longer want to even go for my regular appointments. I go to bed at night, and pray to not wake up the next morning. Then, when I do wake up, I cry. I would not do anything to harm myself, as I know that would be a sin. I also do not want to leave that legacy to my family. So, all I have left is prayer and faith. Some days I get so mad with God. There are so many people suffering with so many dreadful diseases. I know a lot of people fight to live. I feel like I have given up. I lived a very blessed life, and feel as if I am sick now, I cannot complain. But, it is very hard to be sick everyday, and feel like there is nothing but dead ends out there. Sorry to rant on and on. I always hope that the right person will see people's struggles, and do something about it. I pray for everyone and anyone who is sick in any way.

I like edibles because I can control the dosage of CBD or THC that's entering my body. I have to restock and I need to find a nearby dispensary that has something that'll work for me. I don't know if I'll ever be able to fix the root cause of the reason for the pain. I believe Bartonella and Lyme have left a lasting chronic pain in my legs.

    Lyme Disease is PANDEMIC. Lyme Disease is rampant in every U.S. state, in every country. There is just as much Lyme in Arizona as there is in Long Island, NY, as there is in Rhode Island.... people suffering from it are often told that "It's growing pains", "It's just a little fatigue", "It's probably just not enough sleep", "You're probably just overworked", "It's arthritis", "It's all in your head", etc., ad nauseum. OR, they drop dead, are chronically ill/ misdiagnosed, hopefully minimally ill, just 'living with it', or seeking a 'rea'l diagnosis. The media never covers these patients, especially the dead ones who just die off.... Do not kid yourself...it is EVERYwhere there are animals and life.... and has been for thousands of years. Only now, "Lyme" is a massive cocktail of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogen-yuck...which no one test can possibly uncover. A patient would need to be checked for; Cytomegalovirus; Anaplasmosis; Bartonella; Babesia; Lyme Disease; Complete Blood Workup --all by a Lyme Literate MD, etc., etc., etc... in order to rule out "Lyme Disease". Where there are humans there is garbage. Where there is garbage there are mice and rats and birds and cats and dogs and deer and other life and.....ticks. You would need to be in an airtight, lifeless bubble to be in an area that does not have much Lyme! LOL. Birds are often covered with ticks. The ticks fly with the birds- around the world ...or back...or are dropped off right in your yard. Next time you are outside, look for a bird. If you see a bird, you have ticks and Lyme Disease where you live. Honest.

    I am no doctor, either, but I sure feel more informed than most doctors, LOL!.....Yes, Lyme Disease is like a biowarfare viral/bacterial soup! Also, the coinfections that go along with Lyme Disease are plentiful and hard to spell: Bartonella, Babesia, Ehrlichia/Anaplasmosis, Cytomeglomeglovirus..and there's always Thrush from antibiotics, Q Fever, Tularemia, Mycoplasma, Powassan Virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever ("Rickettsia Rickettsii"), "Tickborne Relapsing Fever", Rickettsia Helvetica, Rickettsia Parkerii or Rickettsii Philipii, etc., etc..AND MORE. There are many pathogens in this one "Lyme Disease" that must all be diagnosed and treated appropriately. I tested positive for Bartonella, Babesia, Cytomegalovirus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever & Lyme Disease....while my mother tested positive for Ehrlichia & Lyme Disease. My father died from Powassan fever and Lyme Disease & we did not get a chance to test him for anything else before he passed, unfortunately. My sibling tested extremely high positive for Bartonella and Lyme and died from complications. On a more upbeat note, I find that not eating gluten, sugar, meat & dairy was helpful in my recovery and DEFINITELY continues to be helpful in making me feel better. Oh, and I got Alpha Gal from one Lone Star tick bite, so I am allergic to meat, which is not a big deal for me, a vegetarian.... but I have to be REALLY careful about eating out....as most foods are often cooked together & if my food was cooked with meat, my body turns all red and blotchy and I look like I'm a cooked lobster that's about to explode...much drama, but luckily, I haven't had breathing complications...but I do carry an Epi Pen, just in case. This was a possible rumor going around.... one would have to ingest an impossibly toxic amount of antihistamine for it to matter with Lyme Disease. However, some people with Lyme Disease may find it helpful, for whatever reason. It is not a Lyme cure, unfortunately.

    If the tick has pathogens (highly likely), it depends on WHICH pathogens you are infected with....if it is Lyme Disease and/or Ehrlichia and/or Babesia, Bartonella...you may feel nothing or feel like you have a mild or very serious flu, or aches and pains...or a fever, or no fever. Bartonella might give you weird skin marks that resemble red stretch marks. Bartonella might make you angry or even psychotic. Babesia may throw your bloodwork off, or might make you tired. Some people are chronically ill for decades. Some people are very lucky and go right to a good, Lyme-Literate doctor & receive appropriate, ongoing treatment & perhaps, are only ill for a few months or a year or so..... every one is different. My friend ended up in a wheelchair. I got violently ill with what I THOUGHT was the flu...and went to a doctor who gave me two (2) Doxycycline pills and instructed me to "come back if you don't get better", even though I told him I had multiple tick bites & showed him photos of the tick bites and the raging Bullseye Rashes that appeared on my skin. I ended up in the ER, who basically refused any treatment other than saline drip & a lame referral. -Watch "Under Our Skin" movie and "Under Our Skin II: Emergence". Knowledge is power. Be powerful!

    I disagree with this info . As damaged cells have been observed when inhabited by Borrelia as Lyme sprachetes can enter the human cell!

    This is probably far too simple, but if the bacteria isn’t doing anything in our bodies, then would it not be possible to have our bodies accept it instead of constantly lose a battle fighting it? I’m not aware of such a technique in medicine but it strikes me as a more logical approach, if it’s possible. This is what zero hours of medical study looks like 🥲

    Can't we insert the gene sequence present in deer (responsible for the expression of protein destroying the Lyme bacteria) , into the human genome? (Through genetic engineering)

  • @Stig007
    @Stig0074 жыл бұрын

    How come that protein doesn't kill the Lyme disease inside the tick . Does the ticks digestive system denature that protein before has a chance to act? I'm very surprised growing up I didn't have any tick borne illnesses one time in high school Decided to clean my bed and shaking out my sheets and turning my bed over I saw a lot of dead ticks. It was pretty disgusting But not surprising I lived in the country and my dogs would run around in the woods in the tall grass and then come and sleep in my bed. What is surprising is that I didn't get lyme disease or any other tick borne illness. I would get blood tested annually unless something unusual happened to me .
