How and where did you start? I'm a diver but want to weld and eventually combine the two.

So great to hear what you guys are doing now, so much safer, I broke out in the late 70s, FIT UT Class of 79. We thought we were the best. What a difference now. I remember showing up in Singapore, 23 yo, thought I knew it all. I DID NOT, My old Kiwi dive supervisors told me I didn't know anything. He was right.

I heard 800-1200 a day and Immediately regretted going to school to be an auto tech 🤦‍♂️ lol

I am from class D-205 and The Ocean Corp is where I graduated at in 1990. I have to tell you as a Commercial Diving Superintendent today, I see tenders all the time say they do not feel they got what they paid for at other dive schools. But I have NOT heard that about The Ocean Corp. I watched this video all the way through and I agree with 90% of what Mr Richard said and as a guy who has 30 yrs in the Gulf of Mexico, I still think they are the best in town. Its good to hear there is some honesty in a few dive schools.

But how worth it is it? No money is worth it to me If im gonna lose the hearing in my ears by the time im 50, I mean i get this is dangerous but all jobs are, and dont get me wrong id love to do this but ive been trying to find something as far as is this really as dangerous as people say? I want to grow old and have kids and of course if I get older and have defects thats just that, but if im gonna have my life cut short because thats just what happens with this job then is it really for me? As I know most deaths are usually over stupid reasons such as your welding between two ships, and wave comes and crushes you between both ships like i can do it knowing I need to be aware of everything but, even if I never die in the field i dont wanna die at 50 because of a dive i did 20 years ago if that makes since? ive seen comments of people saying stuff like "Thats a cool job but not with the lifespan of a fruitfly" And ill see others where their comments of real underwater welders and they say that its really not that dangerous and stuff but like are they just saying that because they havent had anything bad happen to them yet? any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was class D117 also went through the NDT program. I have worked all over the world and also turned my seatime working on dive support vessels into a Masters license. Retired now and living in Spain.

you have a hard suit double breasted rubber stuff like astronauts and a big ass metallic helmet like in 70's and basically the air pumping in ur suit creates a pressure that fights the water pressure so u can still breath fairly normal ... it ain't normal at all.. but u breathing... that is why u need a lot of training he said 7 months but u might actually do even 1 year or 3 depending how good u wanna get at diving at that low diving thing. plus u got to do that welding school which is insane stuff ur brain must work 100% and ur body 1000%

I wanna get trained by this dude.....

50 is lower end but more realistic most companies pay around 60k a year to start. I work in the oilfields as a heater operator and only work the winter season and make 70/80k a year. Working the fields can be tricky. If you have no experience you need to know someone to get in. First jobs are garbage like rostabouting, tank battery installer, or containment builder. A few more years on your resume you can land good jobs like frac handing, wireline, pumping, after about 5 years opportunities become abundant. Off shore jobs become unlocked lol. Thats when you join up and let them know youre interested in becoming a welder for them. Lots of dudes go that route. The company pays for the training and certifications. Once you hit the water your pay is substantially higher than starting out do to the fact youre already an employee of theres. 30 days on 30 days off is the schedule most offshore companies run. Lots of days youre not welding. Youre inspecting the rigs. Going from platform to platform. Welders are making 12/15 k a month take home. Just a little insight about my industry

@@Skrenja Sharks are super chill. Only certain species are somewhat dangerous and it's quite easy to keep safe around them by leaving them be. Squids are super uncommon unless you're in very specific locations. They also just hunt fish so they're almost completely harmless unless you fuck with them.

I’m in the army and am thinking about going to DIT and becoming an underwater welder. As someone who’s new going into the industry, what should I do to better prepare myself for the lifestyle, training, work etc.?

I was not a Commercial SAT. Diver but I was a Commercial Fisherman that did Night Diving for Flounder. & Fishing for Snapper King ect. In all my years of Diving at Night around the old Liberty Ships ect. I never had not one Predator Shark get in my Lights NOT ONE. Ppl thought we were BARN YARD NUTS for Diving at Night. I love it. Miss it very much. I say it is safer than Diving during the day. The Sharks & all fish don't like the Lights. I did however run out of AIR under the Liberty Ship Edwards 12:30 one Fri Night. 105 ft about 20-25 ft under it. If my Great Dive Bud hadn't seen me Bolt for the Surface & caught me at 70 FT. As I had already Stoped Kicking could only focus on pulling gas from my Regulator I wouldn't be telling my story. Don't let life pass you by DIVE...

I have the money to go to school for underwater wedding, but I have asthma in which I have to take medicine daily to control. I’m really hoping my medicine will help me if I do decide to go through with my welding plans, as the medicine helps me enormously in normal situations.

Back in 69, my friend came back from Viet Nam after being in the Army for 6 years!!...He got a job for Shell and was an Underwater Welder making about $1500. a Day!!....But he told me that prep work is Not included!!....So that Much money also includes your own prep time!!...He was working in the Gulf,and also came back north to New England.......Sharks, Can Feel the Electricity In the water!!!

My neighbor worked until 2002 He is being on the Micoperi 7000 and 10000 That now are Saipem 7000 and 10000 Castoro 4 -6 and 8 Scarabeo but don't remember which one Other different pipe layer vessels And other crane vessels He worked a lot in the Mexico gulf, in Kongo, Middle Orient , Brazil and Borneo He also worked in Norway If you worked with Italians crews between 1965 and 2002 it's possible that you met him

There are several schools out there. The shortest school is 6 months at young memorial college in Louisiana. It's also the cheapest too. Some schools go from 6 months to 2 years.

I don't thing you will be fitting dreads into the helmet tbh.. I haven't started working underwater as of yet with the kirby helmets but you won't get your head in with dreads.

When welding around animals, do they put up anything to shield the arc from their eyes? Like the shaded curtains around welding booths. Or does it even effect them? Not trying to be an animal rights boohoo but I've welded with my dog around and she was looking straight at me when I lifted my hood

Yes, actually. Though not with any arc technique. Since the moon doesn't have an atmosphere like ours on Earth, you can't burn anything or generate heat in the same way you can here. The gases simply aren't contained by an atmosphere on the moon. NASA and other space agencies with astronauts weld in space through "cold techniques." These are techniques that don't require heat and can be done in a vacuum. There is no fusion, (melting together of materials, basically), that takes place during the use of these techniques. With cold welding, you basically crush two materials together until they stick together, forming a weld that is formed without needing heat. You can't do this with many different types of metals, because the metals have to be softer. They have to be pliable and be able to stretch and deform but without just cracking or shattering. The metals also have to be non-ferrous, meaning they can't have iron in them and aren't magnetic.

You need to adjust the pressure while descending and going up again... Without it, you will get the bends and/or a burst eardrum or a collapsing lung (coming up) because you didn't adjust enough... Long story short: It requires decompression stops while moving vertically in water...

@@punhoss ahhh k, sry for misunderstanding... Can't help you with that (not 100% sure) unfortunately have never heard of smt like that but could imagine it would be rare if smt like this existed... I think you can train/learn equalizing the pressure, but I'm not sure 100% as I mentioned... (atleast I needed to train this because I was bad at it...)

Tbh it's not very difficult to just start from the get go, purchase a cheap welding machine along with proper ppe with some electrodes to use on steel I recommend using 6010 and 7018 for starters. Get some scrap metal and find apps or google settings to run machine based off the thickness and type of metal. From there its trial and error along with getting comfortable and experience. If you're looking for certified training look into jobs or trade schools that offer welding curriculum/application.

Im Not sure your age or if you’re even in highschool, but if you are in highschool still try to see if there are any electives available for welding or mechanics or something like that. If ur not In highschool there should be information you can find online or maybe videos to help you get started in path you want to

I would have to say being physically fit underwater means the ability to resist muscle cramps. Speed means absolutely nothing under water. Everyone moves slowly under water because water is heavier than air Lol
