What Does It Mean to Stop Making Sense? - Talking Heads (Part 3)

Ойын-сауық

In the final part of his interview with David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, Stephen finds out why people are dancing in the aisles at the 40th anniversary theatrical release of the band’s seminal concert film, “Stop Making Sense,” and Byrne weighs in on the meaning behind the film’s title. “Stop Making Sense” is in theaters now, and David Byrne’s new musical, “Here Lies Love,” is on Broadway.

I didn’t set out to interrupt Colbert but I was the one who screamed “we all love seeing the four of you together again!” and Colbert’s response of “that was my f’ing question!” was lightning fast. I actually intentionally said those exact words instead of just “please tour again!” or whatever. It’s more important to me that they enjoy being in the same room together and whether you can tell or not on video, they were really having fun together. Jerry looked right at me and said “thank you” and David and Chris smiled and nodded a few moments later. These people are really enjoying hanging out again and that alone is amazing.

I was working in a video rental store in VT. It was a Friday night and the crowd was on the younger side. We had a big screen TV where we'd play hit movies for the customers. This particular evening we popped "Stop Making Sense" into the VCR. All of the sudden, this innocent video store turned into what would later be called a "rave". Hordes of people dancing and carrying on like it was a concert. We didn't have the owner's permission to do what we did, and the next day he was going to chew us out for it. But it was a small town, and word quickly spread about the fun time that was had. The following week business increased by 40%! Thank you Talking Heads!

Chris Franz was right when saying he loved seeing the film again because Tina is in it. Not only is she a great bassist - very effective - she always looked and moved great, like she was in her own world, grooving away and then doing something fun, like jumping in unison with the rest of the band. I fall in love with her every time I see clips of the band. There is also the DVD 'Talking Heads - Live in Rome', viewable on KZread last time I looked, that sees the band tearing it up with Adrian Belew on guitar. He - as he did with Zappa, Bowie and King Crimson - added a whole new exciting and original element to the band. Mind, Talking Heads were the band we see here. Others came and went, sprinkling their magic on the foursome, though David, Jerry, Chris and Tina are all it takes.

Maybe people won’t believe me but I have 3 great talking heads stories: 1) I was friends with Edie Brickell and she and I went to see talking heads at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. Basically she talked us past security and we snuck back into where the band was hanging out and I got to say hello to a very pregnant Tina; 2) I performed at SXSW in Austin long ago and while I was waiting backstage at Liberty Lunch I started having a great conversation with a beautiful woman. We chatted for a while and then her husband, who was Jerry Harrison walked up and kinda smiled like “busted” 😅 3) I was an extra in True Stories which was shot in a field outside Dallas. I saw David Byrne walking around and handed him a weird demo tape I made and later someone at his production company said they saw my tape at the office! 😊 Hope they play some more live shows!!

There are a lot of reasons why we have not had Talking Heads on tour in the 1990s, 2000's and 2010's which we don't need to get into. But to see them at their best (in the film) respecting each other and what they achieved (in the now), and being friends again makes me happier than seeing them cashing in with some nostalgia tour. Sometimes realising that you are already there is the true genius!

To witness an interview with these human beings, who created the music that is the soundtrack of my life, to produce such things as Remain in Light, Naked, 1977, is to feel as though Beethoven came back from the dead and was interviewed. It feels magical. They are superhuman to me musically, and yet just people. I am so incredibly grateful that they happened, and gifted me their music. I want nothing but the best for each of them.

In 1979, I experienced a life-changing moment when I heard "Fear of Music" for the first time. It was the epitome of perfection with its poetic, futuristic, innovative, and funky elements. It left an indelible mark on me, and I have never stopped raving about it. The album was truly a work of art that encapsulated everything that music should be about. I still worship that vinyl record today, you know you have a masterpiece in your hands when 40 years later it still sounds like it was made yesterday!

Remain in Light - one of the best albums of all time. If you don't know it, queue it up. But don't just play it in the background. Be present for it. To paraphrase Almost Famous, "Listen to Remain in Light with a candle burning and you will see your entire future."

loved everything about this band. even the solo works. some of my all time favorites were Byrne's-The Catherine Wheel, and Harrison's-The Red and The Black albums. I'm also a big Brian Eno fan and think that probably none of this would have evolved without him. This was a wonderful interview and it made smile with nostalgia. Way to go Stephen.

Like you Talking Heads was the band of my late teens/early 20s and I loved them but didn't know a lot about them other than David Byrne. This was such a pleasure to watch and learn more about the whole band and their history.

These interviews remind me of the old Reese's peanut butter cup commercials where two people bump into each other accidentally crossing/mixing chocolate and peanut butter together. That's talking heads and Stephen Colbert together, two amazing ingredients individually and utterly fantastic together. The only thing missing was an impromptu song or two!

It is really great to see them all back, sitting on one sofa, talking. But from the looks they give to each other, it is clear that there won´t be another Talking Heads reunion with new songs. They are indeed one of the greatest bands, the world has ever seen. But their personalities developed into totally different directions. Yet it is clear that Tina and Chris are still a dream team, they really complement each other. Thanks a lot for all their mind-blowing & truly inspiring music! ❤😍

I grew up to my dad doing David Byrne's pencil pogo dance and I absolutely adored this band as a kid. It's not that their music is childish either - it just has such an eternal, universal quality and that quirkiness and fun that kids eat up like candy. I distinctly remember loving "And She Was" so much and so many other classics. I was born in 83' so they were hitting their peak and I never had the chance to see them live. I know it's probably an annoying request having heard it for the last 40 years, but for the love of us all (the fans/the world) PLEASE tour and HAVE FUN with each other!

I saw it in IMAX. The visuals were stunning. The sound sounded kinda shredded. It's a long show. The further along the more it bothered me. I saw the film last time it was in theaters, not that long ago, 2014-ish. That time in a theater with a good THX-type setup. It was lovely to hear that soundtrack punching through the theater. The extended version audio CD is a must listen. Just fabulous.
