In 1982, my mother's boyfriend had been drinking, we were there at his trailer, Charles was nice, even when he'd been drinking, he put in. Black Sabbath cassette, we listened to a few songs, his friend Jack pulled up, and sat in his his truck a few moments before getting out, N.I.B came on, terror emerged in Charles eyes, his hands started shaking, he stood up and looked at Jack getting out of his truck, Jack had blood stains on his shirt he was carrying a knife, he'd just killed and skinned a deer, but Charles thought he was there to hurt us, Charles got that huge shot gun, my mother covered my head, and before I knew it, I heard it, then silence , I lost my hearing for three days, the doctor said that a mere gunshot sound wouldn't do that. But something clawed itself in the heart and soul of Charles that day, he pleaded insanity. I've never heard about him again.I can't drive when this song plays, when I listen to it, I don't feel myself. It's an evil covered in beauty.
This track was on their debut album, Black Sabbath, released February 13, 1970. That was 51 years ago! It's still some of the best musicianship of any genre of music ever!

I laughed when Brad said “This is a different kind of love song“, knowing that the definitive part of the song was coming up, haha! I don’t think it’s necessarily about a specific woman…or even just a woman…..more like the devil fooling and luring what could be anyone.

I don't understand why its even a question to people. The lyrics are blunt and to the point. "Oh yeah! NIB according to the Wiki, was the tittle bassist Geezer Butler gave to the song, based on the drummer’s beard, calling it Nib. But later on it was used for tribute albums unofficially because of the subject matter as Nativity In Black; check it out: When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to 'Nativity in Black'."

That may be what was written in the wiki, but the lyrics are all about the subject being courted by Lucifer so Nativity In Black is probably apt even if the band said it was a reference to Bill’s Beard. Maybe the Wiki isn’t the truth….gasp.

@@garmit61 Bands will often come up with an alternate story for controversial songs for "plausible" deniability" to avoid alienating their more "sensitive" fans. Tom Araya of Slayer does it in interviews when asked about his lyrics. In other words, your claim is almost certainly the accurate one. This all May be true, I usually don’t believe anything I read or hear blindly at first take. I guess my mind is a bit biased from working at Courts and to me everyone is lying most of the time. The only reason I provided this quick and easy answer was to address the simple acronym meaning superficially and not the most profound meaning of a song from my favorite British band of all time. Then again people often are mistaken on the meaning and intent of my comments which is why you rarely read a comment from me on this forums.

In this song, Satan falls in love with a human woman and tries to seduce her. He turns out to be very charming and the early lyrics are quite poetic. >> The title refers to drummer Bill Ward's beard. The band called him "Nibby" because they thought it looked like the nib on the end of a pen (Ozzy came up with the nickname when he on acid and thought Geezer Butler was turning into a fountain pen). Says Butler: Originally it was Nib, which was Bill's beard. When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to Nativity In Black. >>

The next thing you need to listen to is the 2nd side suite, which goes: Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning which is one of the most powerful musical statements EVER and needs to be heard to truly see what Tony Iommi means to musical history apart from the overall brilliance of the piece. This album is not only rock history, but a cultural shift in what music could sound and how it affects us. One of the first songs I heard and loved by Black Sabbath!
The title NIB refers to a pen nib - the old style fountain pen which Black Sabbath members would have used when they were kids in the 1950's. Bill Ward's beard was shaped like a pen nib so they just called the song NIB.

In this episode of Brad & Lex, The comfortable couch couple are both led down the bassline rabbit hole into upbeat drum ecstacy before Ozzy's informal introduction to his natural yet unorthodox vocal tone changes the atmosphere. Brad has a theory and so does Lex as they passively debate love, lust or other but not without returning to the issue at hand and displaying what we come for.....Brad's signature "side to side sway" and Lex's "air guitar/rock bop"?

An excellent Black Sabbath Song, Nativity In Black or NIB, and I Love the opening Bass Line performed by bass player Geezer Butler
Hah I was waitin to see Brads reaction to "Lucifer"... and it didn't disappoint lol
The bass intro is called “Basically” and listed as a separate song on US versions of the album.
From Wiki: "N.I.B." is a song released by British rock band Black Sabbath. It first appeared as the fourth track on the band's 1970 debut album, Black Sabbath. The lyrics are in the first person from the point of view of Lucifer. Bassist Geezer Butler, who composed the song's lyrics, has said that "the song was about the devil falling in love and totally changing, becoming a good person."
Nice!!! Hope to see you guys dive further into Black Sabbath w/ Ozzy from the 70s. They have so much great music from that era.

I stay telling little kids to listen to black sabbath lol.. man thank u guys for doing this one. It'll still be banging 100 years from now.
This is one of Black Sabbath’s best - the bass line is so 🔥
Tony Iommi, the guitarist, quit his job in a factory to pursue his music career with Black Sabbath. On his last day, he got put onto a machine that he wasn't familiar with and chopped the ends of his fingers off. He ended up melting bottle tops onto the ends of his stumped fingers so that he could still perform on the guitar.
N.I.B means Nativity In Black one of my favorite song from Black Sabbath
That opening bass riff by Geezer is so raw and cool.

My personal favorite Sabbath tune.
Occult & Horror movies was very popular in the 70s and i think the boys in Sabbath at that time enjoyed them too.
During their debut tour the Paranoid album, Black Sabbath used N.I.B.(from their first album) to close their show. Great ending.
Definitely check out Black Sabbath - Into the Void. Sick bass and the drumming from Bill Ward is probably my favorite that he's done.
If you would like to explore more of this sound, there's always the doom metal rabbit hole to go down, which would lead to the first Budgie album, and material by other bands like Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Witchfinder General, Witchfynde, Candlemass, Iron Man, The Obsessed, Trouble, Pentagram (from VA), Count Raven, etc.
It is amazing that Tommy Iomi can play so well, with 2 prosthetic finer tips. He lost them when he was a late teen.
Many fans thought the title stood for "Nativity In Black" or "Name In Blood." The bass intro is called "Bassically." It is listed as a separate song on US versions of the album. "Nativity In Black" is the name of two Black Sabbath tribute albums released in 1994 and 2000. Groups contributing to the albums include Megadeth, Godsmack, Biohazzard, and Faith No More. The first Nativity In Black album, released in 1994, contains a cover of this by Ugly Kid Joe. The second, from 2000, contains a version from Primus with Ozzy Osbourne. In November of 1969, Black Sabbath appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show, where they played this song along with "Black Sabbath," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," and "Sleeping Village." It was some great early exposure for the band.
