I'm a big fan of Alter's translation of "welter and waste" because it uses alliteration to capture of feel for "tohu wabohu" in a way "formless and void" doesn't quite grasp. I'd recommend Alter's translation to anyone who wants a fresh OT translation to compare with your preferred one in a full Christian Bible.

Its done through a process for understanding. Surely, the creator can simply create everything in an instant but then we would not understand his creative power if that was done. x"And the earth was without form and void." (Gen. 1:2.) Correctly translated, this verse would read: "And the earth in winter is dreary and desolate" (tohu ve bohu). In this rendering I am supported by the Rev. George Bush, a noted American Hebraist (see Science and the Bible, by Rev. H. W. Morris, p. 52). This also makes much for my hypothesis, as the earth in winter is indeed dreary and desolate - dreary, i.e., bloody, in the old sense of the word, in allusion to the color of the dead vegetation at this season; desolate, because of the obliquity of the Sun's rays, as opposed to the insolate, or more direct rays of the sun in summer.

tohu vu bohu (desolate wasteland, empty of life). Consider that Isaiah says God didn't create (bara) is in vain (tohu); Isaiah 45:18. Though many English translations use "was" in Genesis 1:2, hayah is generally used for to become or cause to be; "is" is usually implied in Semitic languages, rather than explicit.

Eh this is missing something here because when God called "Earth" tohuwabohu he hadn't yet created the sky or dry land, so it's not very sensical to designate those "waters" as "what's under our feet." I think rather, in the same way that there are multiple "heavens" (for example, the "vault" which is the sky and the higher, immaterial heaven which is the abode of God and the heavenly host) there are also multiple forms of "Earth." there is earth as in what is below us as opposed to the sky, and there is the "earth" that was "in the beginning" which is essentially all of material creation, as opposed to the spiritual heaven, which without the indwelling of the heavenly light is an unproductive welter and waste, specifically because is it formless and void (because the forms of things are the patterns/logoi contained in the immaterial heaven) To drive this home to say the "earth" in the beginning was space is as inacurate as to say it's the planet earth. It is rather a different category of "thing" which precedes both, the chaotic, formless "waters" of material potential that has not yet been shaped by its creator

Yes, I believe the earth was as any of the other planets, void and without form. We see rocky planets, gaseous planets, or ice planets...the earth also, was similarly void and without form as a water planet. What I find most interesting though, is that we have no way of knowing how long The Spirit brooded over the waters; while He was most likely establishing the foundations of the earth.

God created us to love, praise, and have a relationship with him. However, we have all sinned against God. God is perfectly good and holy and because of that He can’t dwell with sinners and he must punish us. Sin separates us from God. Hell is punishment and separation from God. However, God is rich in mercy and came to earth in the flesh as Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect life and died on the cross for our sins so that if we believe in Him we may have eternal life with Him in heaven. We are sure of this because Jesus rose from the dead and defeated sin and death.

God created the universe and us, because He wants to have a family. Otherwise only God exists, because He is the source of everything, nothing exists besides Him. And He wants a family that is not forced into loving Him, but does it freely. God doesn't want sockpuppets, He wants meaningful company and real children. So God gave us free will, and will never infringe upon it, because it defeats the entire point. However, free will means the possibility of sin and evil, which is indeed what we ended up doing with it. And since God is just, wherever there is transgression, there have to be consequences. Otherwise there would be no difference between being good and being evil, if actions did not have consequences. However, God has gracefully decided to take those consequences upon Himself and suffer in our place, so justice may be consummated and restored. That is why Jesus had to die like that - someone had to, for the consequence of sin is death. And in His death, our actions have had their consequence - our sin has indeed lead to death, His death. However, Jesus rose from the dead and is now willing to forgive us, His killers. He has no reason for doing this, other than genuinely wanting to be reconciled with us and have us as His family. He has all the reasons to condemn us, but chooses not to. That is why we are also called to forgive our transgressors, even when we would be justified to condemn

  • @FlyingSpaghettiJesus

Apparently the only way god could change his opinion about sin was to impregnate a woman with himself, so he could then send himself as a human sacrifice to himself to save humanity from the torment he said we deserved for breaking rules he designed. All the while knowing completely that we weren’t capable of following them to his satisfaction and we would break them anyway. This was the best plan that an Omnipotent Deity could come up with? Great logic.

  • @dimitartodorov4826

@@FlyingSpaghettiJesus The problem is not God's opinion about sin but the nature of sin. Sin is destructive twisted version of good which brings only pain, suffering and death. Sin is the reason we live in a fallen world filled with terrible things. Thats why Jesus needed to come and condemn sin (Romans 8:1-4) You have a wrong understanding of Christ's redemption of human kind. Christ took all our sins on Himself (He took this evil which sin brings), and by becoming a subject to it overcame it since He is sinless. The way you describe God is more like a pagan angry god needing his sacrifice so he wont kill the humans. Penal substitutionary atonement isnt the only theory of the atonement. Christians sometimes represent God wrongfully by having flaws in some their understandings of God and following man-made traditions. Open your Bible, see how Christ's acts, what He says and know that He is the perfect representative of the True and Living God.

The biblical language make me think earth was just flat and covered with water only. We don't have lights in the heavens, no dry land or mountains, darkness was all around. God separated the waters, made land and sea, opened the atmosphere to show sun and moon and stars. Yet it didn't rain, only a mist came up from the ground. The atmosphere probably contributed to long life until after the flood and the atmosphere changed when rain started happening. I don't think just saying "unproductive" really captures the vision of an earth, dark and wet with no land that couldn't see the sun, moon, and stars yet.

Does that mean there was an existing Earth before God fix it to be more productive. Much appreciate your help on this.🙏

While what you said is true, it doesn't really answer the confusion the question is trying to understand. Also when God named the earth in Genesis it was referring specifically to the dry land. The thing is the heavens and the earth were created together much like all of mankind was created together when God created Adam. When they were created there was simply water. The heavens (space as well as the atmosphere) were formed when God formed the expanse to separate the waters from one another and then gathered the waters below the expanse together in one place. The waters that were gathered and the land that came forth from those waters together is what we refer to as the planet Earth.

At least in the English translations, the earth is used in two different contexts in the history of creation, the first time being the planet itself and the second time is the lands

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". Translation: In the beginning of time God created space and matter. The earth was formless, no atmosphere, empty. Void of life. Uninhabitable.

In Genesis, if we take it to be the creation of all things and the beginning of all things we should read these in a way that assumes a progression of formation. The "Earth" was not yet planet earth. It was described as what it would become, it's formation not coming until day 3. On day 1 God created light, which also required the creation of the mechanism of light. That mechanism is found in the formation of the fundamental particles and laws that bind them. So, when God said, "Let there be light," he was also forming the mechanism for the electromagnetic force, which by extension would be the atom, etc. This is why the term "without form and void" applies to "the earth" which could also be taken as everything physical in nature. So, being without form, it would have no way to have a form without the existence of physical laws to give it any meaningful definition. In that case, H2O would have been impossible, since there was no such thing as positive or negative force prior to that. This is all a necessary extension and consequence of the lack of the existence of the electromagnetic force in the nascent universe. The next issue is that the "expanse" made on the 2nd day was not the atmosphere, it may have been the entirety of the limits of space-time itself. The text seems to indicate so when it describes the stars and the birds both being in the expanse of the heaven, something only possible to the expanse refers to the entirety of space, rather than the atmosphere. (Sorry, to all the canopy idea people out there, at least hiblically, that position is indefensible.) All that to say, day 1 in Genesis 1 most likely did not refer to planet earth, rather, what would later be formed into planet earth and everything else that is made of atoms.

But that leads one to believe that there must have been something that caused the earth to be unproductive and therefore people develop theories that there was a creation prior and other unbiblical nonsense. The earth being formless and void IS "unproductive" and a "wasteland". There was no change in meaning, just fancier wording.

The fact that they believe it was created in 6 days is a joke and an insult to the process of creation. When God speaks about the heavens and the earth he is refering to the universe and earth. To say earth was a wasteland is mildly inaccurate as there is a process to creation which we can understand Gods power through science

Wait so I’m confused. Does this “supposedly” go with the Big Bang? Did god make the universe before or during that verse? If before then does that mean the “earth” is the universe? And the heaven is somewhere else? Or if during then the heaven is in the universe? Is the earth being formless and whatnot about the ACTUAL earth and how it had no life??? So many questions and I’m fully lost. Is it saying the heaven and earth were made instantly. Wtf
