What Does Brake Bias Do? iRacing Tutorial with

Ойындар

In any racing environment, we all want to go fast, but one of the key elements to carrying speed is the methods in which we slow down. Enter the Brake Bias, the setting on the car in which you decide how much more front or rear brake you desire over the other.
‪@davecamm‬ returns for another teaching lesson at Traxion. Driving iRacing‘s now older Ferrari 488 GT3 as the EVO is now available to own as of 8th September, Dave explains the use of the tool around iRacing’s version of the Red Bull Ring.
If you paid attention to Dave’s track guides this season, he always dropped his personal Brake Bias preferences. If you’ve ever struggled with finding the right number, this is the video for you.
Be sure to check out the rest of Dave Cam‘s Traxion guides. Let us know how much you lap times improved in the comments below. Don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell for more content like this!

Awesome instructional video. The numbers for other cars, for example the P911, might be very different, but the concept is the same, said captain obvious.

Thank you sooo much! I just started sim racing a few weeks ago and well, I'm terribly slow......but changing my brake bias some as you demonstrated just cut a full second off my time after 10 minutes of testing. Still a long, long way to go, lol....but I can't thank you enough for this!

90% of the reason why you used a lower or higher relative brake bias per corner here was due to track inclination. For the same inclination into a corner, threshold braking will require more front bias than a more trail braking corner. But when there is significant inclinations involved, it changes the equation because weight will naturally shift more forwards when downhill inclined and backwards when uphill inclined. If the red bull track were a completely level/flat track, your brake bias of lower for the first and second corner and higher for the remaining corners would be flipped.

Good point - it's odd to think that we'd ever want rear bias brake pressure, especially in a heavy braking zone where all weight would transfer forward. But with the high track inclination, I guess that balances out...

Well explained! I'm glad to see new players coming to iRacing, and these videos help them to be prepared ahead of time and avoid some of the avoidable things, luck being of course a part of the game. I'm trying to do the same with my channel, keep it up man!

Very nice explanation. It finally clicked for me. I'm guessing if you're not used to switching it every turn you probably want to error on a higher > lower brake bias? Except of course for certain tracks like Monza where I'd assume you could run pretty low.

I'm not sure this is entirely accurate: Brake bias affects which tire is under more pressure, sure - but I'm not sure it changes the weight transfer. In the video, Dave mentions that more front bias will get the front tires to dig in more during braking. Under any braking, the deceleration will cause the weight of the car to move forward. The brake bias doesn't affect this weight transfer. Only the magnitude of the deceleration affects the amount of weight transfer (and I suppose the track inclination). With the weight transfer, the amount of grip each tire has changes. Under deceleration and weight forward, the front tires will have greater grip capacity. This is why we trail brake to keep the weight forward over the fronts. This would occur with rear brake bias too. The problem in the case of too much rear brake bias under heavy deceleration is that the rear tires have reduced grip capacity and will lock up more easily. The goal with brake bias is, for each corner, to anticipate the weight transfer and find a brake bias that will allow for maximum braking without locking any tires.

Just want to add - Dave, I'm a big fan! Your videos are thoughtful and so helpful. Thank you! And please feel free to point out the flaw in my intuition above. Not trying to be right - would much prefer understanding what is right. Cheers!

It's amazing that you're able to manage all those adjustments while lapping at speed. I feel doing this would have me making more mistakes but I'll do some testing to see if I can get the hang of it. How do you deal with not seeing your relative screen though? It would be nice if there was a way to program a few different presets, that didn't require the in car adjustments screen to be displayed. Thanks for the knowledge.

Do you change bias when the tyres are getting worn and the fuel gets lower? As the race progresses. How do you deal with worn tyres?

  • @davecamm

Yes, sometimes you'll feel front end grip fades, so it's then time to go down a couple of clicks for a couple of laps just until the front tyres cool. Just be careful trail braking for those couple of laps 👍

Isn’t this backwards? Lower the number makes it less stable but a lot more rotation for trailbraking. And higher the number more straight line braking up to a point and less rotation.
