What does an Occupational Therapist Do?

www.gaylord.org April is Occupational Therapy (OT) Month. Occupational therapists "help people [of all ages] participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities." These daily activities are also known as "occupations." Some of the things an OT does include helping people live life to the fullest by enhancing function, supporting skills for the job of living, improving strength, and using assistive technology. At Gaylord our OTs bring back fun to being functional!

    I learned about this career and really wanted to pursue it, but the powers that be make it really difficult. There is only one college local to me that has this program and they only accept 30 people at a shot.. Id have to take prerequisites first spend money, and than I might not even get into the program and I wouldn't have the extra time to waste being in my mid 30's. I wish I knew about this field earlier in life.. But I was busy doing this job for free taking care of my mother who had a host of medical problems and cancer for years. I could bring that experience with me to this field, but they rather make it extraordinarily difficult and expensive for people.

  • @xo7499

    @xo7499

    I know right? these helpful people deserve to have the program cheaper. perhaps you can look into the health corps scholarship for that program. there's also occupational therapist assistants . not sure if they have a program near you. if not, you can take those prerequisites and use them elsewhere like.dental hygiene or nursing, not sure if you're intersted in either of those last two.

  • @Guinea54

    @Guinea54

    7 жыл бұрын

    xoxXOXO l Def not nursing.. I don't have the stomach for that field. Thanks for the suggestion.. Yeah I don't know, and they make you take that DUMB ass GRE test too.. Such an absolute waste of money and time taking that crap. Every student in the country should refuse to take it,, its a money making scam.

  • @Guinea54

    @Guinea54

    7 жыл бұрын

    Jenny mss A lot of programs only take a certain number of people.. Where i live, its limited options, and one option is 1500 a credit.. Maybe you are cool with having to pay tremendous loans to get an education and take a dumb test that is completely irrelevant for another 200 dollars. He'll if people don't mind the shitty system, than hey more money in their pockets.. No reason to have to take all these bullshit prerequisites and repeat highschool all over again and pay such enormous fees to have to pay loans off for life. Its a shit system and not everyone has the leisure go switch careers and go through all that bullshit if they didn't start in it when they were young.

  • @Guinea54

    @Guinea54

    7 жыл бұрын

    Jenny mss Yeah now picture if you were say 35 , 36 with a job and bills to pay.. and you wanted to switch careers. They have it so it would turn away people who might make great therapists and make amazing contributions in the field.. If people have the ability and passion, they shouldn't have so many obstacles to deter people..

    Most programs are competitive. I am lucky enough to have 3 near-by schools to apply to but they have a lot of pre reqs and only accept small amount. If you really want to become an OT you have to volunteer with OT's, get a lot of experience to show your passion for it and the rest will come. You'll never know if you can get in if you don;t try. How old are you exactly? The only downside is you would definitely need time to get your BA first.

    I see people in this video working with people with whole body movements, but I thought OT was fine motor skills? I will shortly have a bachelor's degree and I think it will be a lot easier to move into OT because it only requires a master's, I can make good money, the job availability is good, and most importantly, I can help people. I'm also very interested in the human anatomy. However, I'm torn between this and PT or PTA. I'm just not sure what the difference really is.

  • @GaylordHealthcare

    @GaylordHealthcare

    6 жыл бұрын

    Here are some good links to help you understand the roles of a PT and an OT. A PTA is a physical therapy assistant. You are right - OTs must have a master's degree. A PT must now have a doctorate in physical therapy. Best of luck on your decision both are great fields and you can make a huge difference in the lives of the patients you work with.
