What Does a $700 Thermal Get You?
Thermals are a game changer. But I think all to often people ascribe the performance of a Global Hawk thermal device to a 700 dollar amazon unit.
So how good are they actually?
This will be the first in a long (but likely slow) series where I slowly move up the thermal pricing list.

I’ve been eyeing entry level thermals for a while so this is much appreciated. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be worth it without spending at least a rack, that seems to be holding true so far.

I've had a FLIR TK for a few years. It is handy for a quick glance to see what animal is causing trouble near the house without spooking them with a flashlight. I just took it while walking the dog tonight (75 degrees F) and found a deer standing at the edge of a field. At around 50 yards it is obviously there, at 70 yards it was the same color as the bush behind it. I could not see trees in another field 150 yards away. The cheap FLIR is not great for combat ops against people. It could be handy for small game hunting.

I picked up one of the AGMs used recently, and it’s handy. I can keep an eye on my dog at night without turning on the floodlights, and can tell if she’s trying to get under the fence 100yds away. It’s definitely great for “hey there’s a thing over there”.
Something to keep in mind with any thermal sight is a usable vs a pretty picture. Drive your contrast down to accentuate hot objects such as people/animals. You dont need to see every bush and it is actually just adding noise/clutter to the picture. I see this all the time with new soldiers/airmen etc... It doesnt need to look good if you can see the human outline instead of every bush and rock.
My squad was issued 3 javelins back in 2003 but, the CLU was the star of the show. Man we used that thing soooo much. It was so dark at night due to the storm that our NVGs just did not work at night. You could not see an IR strobe 10 yards away.

yeah I've heard similar stories. Kinda speaks to how badass the AGM is/was. Has such a good target pod it eclipse most units native observation equipment.
I’ve been using the Scout TK Marine ( no real difference other than color of the housing and it’s supposedly water resistant ) for several years while hunting. It has helped me recover 4 deer that would e been very difficult to track otherwise. We’ll worth the $512 that I spent on it. As far as it’s usefulness in a SHTF scenario? I’d say pretty handy, lightweight, decent battery life, and sees hot stuff out to a fair distance-so, pretty good. Is it a top tier thermal? By no means! Way better than human eyeballs? Absofreakinglutely!!

idk if brass facts was testing this device during day but that would make sense why it performed so poorly. At night its probably a different story cause everything is cooler and a persons body would stand out alot easier.

The Iray RH 25 is nice once you get to the 640 micron level. Almost same size as a pvs14 and it can be helmet, handheld or weapon mounted. You can also get the international version the Pfalcon 640 from Canada for under $4k
@yzhou05

The 640 # does refer to the sensor resolution (well one of the axis, RH25 is 640x512), and that’s measured in pixels, the bigger the better. The other important stat is “pixel pitch” or “sensor pixel size”, and that’s the one measured in microns, where the smaller the better to provide a smoother/more detailed image (current options seem to be 12-17 microns).
I have the even more garbage AGM 160, but it has actually helped me find coyotes on extremely dark nights. We had to use IR lights to find them with our PVS-14s. I'll definitely be upgrading

man even at the ~$1000 price point its still a tough choice based on the cost/ benefit scale. but i can certainly see the value in it, and the cost is almost there, i bet in a few years itll be down close to $500 and then it would be something i can really start to consider.
What a coincidince, I literally just ordered the AGM this morning.
Youre a goober. Thanks for the video dawg
Interesting topic.
Own the AGM. It offers much more in a semi urban or rural setting than what you've shown here, but all your points are totally valid. It's not a replacement for higher level gear. It's an awesome supplementary tool though and well worth the price tag in my opinion. Fits in a pocket, simple, and can sync to a phone if you don't want to broadcast your own position. I've gotten just over 8hrs on one battery charge, so it's not great but it's not terrible compared to say an Eotech lol. Did you know the AGMs are helmet mountable? Would never recommend they're used in place of NV, but they did put the mounting threads in the perfect spot for attachment to a j-arm, same stand off as a PVS14. Picture is canted though. Great video, accurate info. They can be valuable in the right circumstances, they have limits though. Cheers.
I have a HikMicro Lynx Pro LE10 ($720 AUD), as a tripod mounted spotter, if held steady it seems to work quite well to detect people and animals out to about 200-300m and vehicles much further out, as for Identification, I use a Pard digital night vision clip on (IR Illuminator OFF, ambient light only) mounted to a spotting scope.. While not "Tacticool" certainly beats the Mk1 eyeball in the dark...
I had to check this out because I actually have a TM10-256, definitely a good review for it to compare the FLIR scout...which I almost bought and I'm now glad I didn't 😅 I also do have a PVS14 which I upgraded from a sionyx aurora which is a budget digital NVG unit but it's definitely a world of difference....and now I'm a broke cool guy😂, I recently had the opportunity to use a skeet x and a voodoo s thermal units, both are in I think the $7-$8000 range, I understand now that I probably need to become a professional lottery winner to ever acquire one of these units, but they're definitely the most dope thermals I've ever looked through !!!
The beast !
The last image from that agm was such a good doggo
Picked up a Flir Breach a couple of years ago when it was still under $2k. Found it to be a good (not great) mid-level device. Does a decent job and it's tiny compared to most others. It's smaller than a PVS-14. Maybe you can compare it to iRay ML19. iRay has slightly better res, but slower refresh. Both are selling for around $2,500 right now.

I got the last 4 Torry Pines Logic T20 mini thermal weapon sights on the internet last year. they have the shit refresh rate of like 9 hz and only 80x60 resolution, BUT they come with OPTICAL zoom from 25-10 degrees. That is about 8MOA per pixel when at full zoom. not so good for shooting fast moving targets but at close-ish quarters (150 yards and under) it will cut through dust/ smoke and highlight hot spots in very dark situations with no supplemental light. They work pretty darn well at night or in the cold. And you can take a shot at a stationary (or nearly stationary) target. I like to slap them on my subsonic suppressed guns.
I have a maritime FLIR, very similar to this. It taught me to never rely on a rechargeable battery.

I picked up an AGM Taipan 10-256 for like $499. The detection range is around the 500 meter range, which is further than I'll see with thermals where I live. And its a true 1x. Works fine mounted side by side with a PVS14. Obviously, you get what you pay for, but take your use case and environmentals into account. You really dont need to spend $3.5k on a thermal unit.
Time for the the weeklyish dose of brass facts therapy!
AGM Adder ts35-384 is hands down best bang for the buck thermal sight.
FLIR (thermal) in general is overestimated. Even in SAR missions, with a high end device, it is NOT easy to track something unless you already have a clue of where it is. I`ve seen freaking CD_ROM being spotted from 2.5NM on the jungle canopy, and at the same time a group of 5 hiding under the cover of the thick jungle (and we knew where they were at), staying unnoticed for hours.
@BrassFacts

yeah. The numbers I've seen on nicer units are a serious overestimation and perfect scenario (cold backdrop). In reality it reminds me of range finders. Go ahead and take 30% of the listed performance off the top.

These things work great with the blue tooth you can put them on a pole and observe from cover... Drones and aircraft with the sky as a backdrop stick out like a sore thumb... Not perfect ID but you know they are up there.
the infiray t2 pro is pretty amazing, way more clear than the lower end ATN stuff. Just cram the phone in a juggernaut case.
Would love to see a Brass Facts style comparison of identification & detection of the same image between NV and thermal. If your naked eye was better then the thermal, id imagine NV would be outrank someone’s eye or budget thermal in object identification at 2-300 yards.
Modern vehicle mounted thermals are pretty amazing, and also like 150-350k for a modern set up, so out of price for anyone but the DoD and DHS. Some you can see a small boat at 10nm in almost total darkness, or very clearly see folks 1-2m away in dense terrain. Used a lot in another time of my life on boats. But there are essentially no good hand held units, especially at a reasonable price point for normal people. I think night vision is a much better option for the armed prepared citizen, as for
This is easily my favorite channel, no bullshit, good info, and just the right amount of 🅱️ased
RH25 micro is the way. I love mine and totally worth 7k
A friend from my group has a luepold lto, and for the price, that thing was great. Of course they don’t make it anymore
I have the AGM TM-160 which is usable but has a pretty short range and low res. can detect a human size target around 150ish yards. I also have a FLIR OTM-236, range is MASSIVLY better. I can see helos off on the horizon with it. both are around 2x native the flir is heavy doesn't come rechargeable and eats CR123's by the half dozen. but its way better for the upgrade. ultimately if you are serious you need the ability to rifle mount thermal otherwise you just see threats and have no way to engage the threats.
This vid saved me some money. Thought it would be a cool gadget to help me spot wild life around here, but it is under whelming to say the least… that really looks like it’s best use is to find wet spots and cold bridges around the home :((((
Interesting. I have an AGM something or other, and find it's a game charge compared to naked eye. But I don't have nods as a point of comparison, and maybe the woods in western Pennsylvania are a different scenario than desert.
Obviously budget thermals aren't there yet but its exciting to see how much more available and cheap this tech is becoming

15:40 that doggo over here looks like it’s has its eyes censored like an actual military operative. Looks sick as hell. Good doggo
Comparing thermal sensors is a nightmare, even by data only. Manufacturers dont publish everything and use different measuring standards. Really frustrating
I think I’m just going to get a handheld monocular thermal. One that see’s a couple/few hundred yards where I can see if something is walking on two legs or four. I own decent NV so I feel like if I can see something with the thermal from further away then I can flip on the NV and try to identify.
Imagine if these had a limited, 1-5min, reusable (rechargeable) cooling system. Maybe c02 canisters cooling a heatsink on the sensors? At these prices, someone should try to jerry rig one and find out. 3D printed co2 holder, lightweight, properly sealed, and with a good trigger for cooling on-demand... I think detection would be at least twice as good.
End of the day, save your money and get the good stuff

I have tested the FLIR Scout in the suburbs and it works better in that environment. Better but not great. I can watch foxes 2-3 blocks away in the early morning hours when they're hiding in the shadows. So it might not be great for reconnaissance but it would be useful for detection. definitely. Trees / anything green stays much cooler so anything warm blooded sticks out with much more contrast. I have an old caterpillar s60 phone with an 80x60 pixel thermal sensor built in and I use it to spot birds and deer in the woods, the range and resolution aren't really good enough to make out what kind of animal you're seeing, but the contrast to see if something is there at all is definitely sufficient. Meanwhile Pixfra is offering devices with the same resolution as that AGM to10 256 but starting even lower at 400 bucks, so I imagine those devices work orders of magnitude better in the woods. The desert really seems to be the worst case scenario for thermals, best case is therefore probably anything with snow.
