Assalamu alaykom wa rahma'tullah wa barakatuh, it reminds me of the story of the pious predecessors who was an alcoholic and he was always being punished for drinking, on one occasion he was locked up and a battle took place between the believers and a group who were far from that, he begged the wife of the leader to let him go into the battle [he was an excellent warrior] & she did so, then he went into the battle and fought bravely, and when the battle was over he rode back to the place to which he was again locked up, and because of that instance, he was forgiven insha Allah, and no longer locked up. Allah alone knows who is the best of people. It also reminds me of the wisdom that a man may be pious in conduct in appearance but because he is so pleased with himself, he becomes arrogant - and loses himself, then there is the person who commits a sin, and can't give it up, but due to the state of repentance and sorrow over that sin, becomes humble and ends up forgiven by Allah. Subhan Allah, only Allah knows our story and how it ends, we need to always try, Alhamdulillah.
