    Leaning into the jester angle may be a little more emblematic of her position. Court jesters were one of the only people who were able to mock and deride royals/nobles thanks to their position and the assumption that it was just part of the job. So given her position, she may take up the role as she's the only one who knows the dirty laundry Gotham's elites are carrying and thus seeks to clean things up.

    Honestly given its the 40s, maybe she saw posters of minstrals or the like and got the idea from there. Plus here's the thing: the Harlequin, or Jesters, were the only ones who could make comments about the rich and powerful and NOT be persecuted by them because it was their job to basically give news to the kings and other nobles in ways that don't automatically get them sacked. So basically it could be a way for her to make a stance on things.

    Yeah. I've seen Harley always paired up with The Joker in many Batman stories and she doesn't appeared to be an independent villain with her own motive outside of her being the "Number Two" to The Clown Prince and a partner-in-crime to Poison Ivy (at least the pairing is wholesome). The new Harley Quinn that lurks around to eliminate those who wronged her, while at the same time, still keeps her job as a psychiatrist sounds like a refreshing concept that deserves to be keep in future Batman adaptations. DC have done it with The Riddler in _Batman 2022,_ and now Harley.

    I think there's more of an effort to not just uncouple Harley Quinn from the abusive relationship with the Joker, but also to start moving away from the 'Jokermania' we all had to live with. And I'm here for it, it was becoming oversaturated, and some decent performances suffered as a result, like in the Arkham games.

    I mean, Arthur Fleck is wildly different from the mainline Joker in personality and appearance, I don't think big departures are a bad thing if they do it right. Separating Harley from the Joker entirely would be a little odd, but considering how much of Harley's character is in a push and pull with him (being an independent character who can lead her own story, but also being forever linked to him down to the costume) having a clean break honestly sounds a little refreshing.

    I do think that's a unique take. Not 'Harley without Joker', but 'Harley if she was an original villain from the Golden Age'. No Joker involved in her story, he either doesn't exist or pulled a Golden Age and died after one caper. Because 'Harley after leaving Joker' hasn't been original in over a decade, and stock Harley and Joker got enough material in the Arkham Games to hold me over. You want a new angle, this is your best bet. Harley is a solid Early Modern age character if not being too recent for even that(she only got into the mainline comics in 1999 and her usage was very spotty and sporadic until after 2009 when Arkham Asylum gave her a noticable boost). So what WOULD a Golden Age take on the character look like?

  • @graveyardshift2100
    @graveyardshift2100Ай бұрын

    Modern Harley is so far removed from the original that they are practically different characters. Modern stories also just completely fail to do anything significant with her backstory, so Joker is already kinda useless for her. A fresh take on the character is absolutely needed at this point. Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with having her be a victim of abuse as her origin, and if anything it just helps show that victims can become bigger than their abusers. But the only thing I've seen recently that even tries to use this is her cartoon and it does it in the worst possible way. "You didn't make me i made myself" No, he literally made you.

    @@Dookieman1975 here's the thing with that. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are all obviously different from their original interpretations, but they were never meant to be these highly developed characters with concrete traits and an endless history. They were originally nothing more than what Conan the Barbarian is, short adventure heroes that existed just for the sake of it. But that's not the case with Harley, she was specifically made to fit a role and play out a story. Although I do think the Btas comics kind of ruined her long before modern stuff. They had it revealed that instead of being a competent Dr she had instead slept her way through med school/college. Yeah....that was bad. My personal hangup with what we've gotten so far is that the character doesn't sound much like Harley Quinn, but rather a new Bruce Timm original. Now this isn't a bad thing in any way Timm has proven himself as a master of making Batman characters. I just don't understand why he would want to recreate one of his best works over making something new. She could be called Miss Mime, or something, holding to the idea that she doesn't TELL anyone about her client's secrets. While dressing like a clown to show how much of a joke she thinks these people are. Still Timm is a master, and all things said I trust him to make an enjoyable Batman show.

    Harlequins are, traditionally, super-skilled servants who use their status of belonging to two worlds(Poor Background, Rich Resources. Alive/Dead. Basically, imagine Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne piloting a giant robot instead of dressing as a bat, and you get the premise. The studio which produced it was a former subcontractor for BTAS, which if you look at the production and character design clearly influenced the anime. Some of the Big O characters are also based on BTAS characters, too (notably Schwarzwald = Scarecrow). Would be a good way to expand the channel's focus, I think.

    Something absolutely deranged that this show could do is make it so that Harley is the one who ends up creating The Joker, as opposed to The Joker creating Harley. Though I don't particularly like ANY batman story dwelling on The Joker's origins or backstory (I believe that sort of explanation dampens the impact of joker's strangeness), I think it'd be a neat little switcharoo to make. Could absolutely work, too-- He could've just been one of her Patients that she decided needed some vigilante justice, and ironically creates something even worse.

  • @serenedoge9920

    I think it would make more sense if Harley was treating women thrown into Arkham Asylum either by their husbands or families that want them out of the way, for one reason or another. Or after they defend themselves from their abuser and were punished for it. After hearing the histories from women who either were committed falsely or developed severe problems from abuse, she becomes the Harlequin to take revenge for them. Runs into Batman investigating the murders, he finds out she’s helped position the women to inherit their abusers assets. Idk. I think it sounds better than just hearing guys tell her awful shit they did and then following them home and beating their ass. And Jesters speak truth to power. I think the costume is to draw inspiration for attacking those who are beyond justice. The Jester was the only member of the court who could chastise the King.

I always thought that it'd be cool if he had a jekyll and Hyde thing going on, where Jonathan Crane is a prominent villain on his own, while Scarecrow is his alter ego, but maybe he doesn't know that he is the Scarecrow until later. One is interested in studying fear, using mental tactics to make people afraid, while the other uses more physical ways and is instead turned on by people being afraid and experiencing fear himself. Later, when Jonathan finds out that he is the Scarecrow, they could join together and make the ultimate boogyman.

    It'd also be nice if the Scarecrow had more of a southern accent while Jonathan was British. Jonathan would hate his southern roots because of the truama he experienced growing up there, but Scarecrow is everything Jonathan hates about himself. Using cheap tactics like his old fear gas and toxins that the Scarecrow "stole" from his lab to get a fear reaction out of people for his own pleasure. Jonathan could have a breakdown finding out that they are the same, but would give in to his desire and own fears and the both of them would become something much darker then we've ever seen him be before.

    As a Harley Quinn lover I’ll welcome any new interpretations of the character, plus concepts of different people having the same mantle during different times of comic book history is fairly common I’d say. So this isn’t the worst thing to come about, plus it’s good to have a character that doesn’t purely touch on one particular subject matter. While I can in fact imagine that joker will be in the show, I’d like to imagine Harley in this story to join the joker because he’s enticed her with thoughts of changing this city and the only way she can do that is by joining forces with him. Compared to the backstory that is joker being like “don’t you just want to go apeshit?” And Harley falling for him

I believe when Lovecraft took him into his extended mythos he turned him into yet another fish monster (he also named him Hastur, even tho I'm pretty sure Hastur was just a lake in Carcosa) speaking of Lovecraft, it just occurred to me that there's precedent for this connection, Arkham asylum is named after a town in some of Lovecraft's stories

Which if true is dumb, because this show could have made Punchline as a not well known character BECOME a better known character. The Smallville Season 11 comics did this same mistake when they had Batman work with a female Nightwing go from Stephanie Brown to Barbara Gordon because, again, the latter is a more known character than the former. Also, Harley has been overused so much that she should be put on a bus and sent away until enough people actually start missing her again.

    I feel like after you change enough about a character’s identity, the character sort of loses itself. It’s not really an embodiment of the original character anymore. If you change personality traits, ideology, physical form, relationships to others, you’re essentially changing that character’s identity, what makes them, them. Imagine you come home to someone you love and their personality, appearance, worldview, etc, are all slightly (or significantly) different. It’s like, “who are you?” “Reimagining” is one optimistic way to look at it but there’s still a feeling of disingenuousness I get from it.
