What do I need to start recording?

The sixty-four thousand dollar question...
Well not quite. Actually there are only a few bits of equipment that you need to get you started. If you already have a computer (and it doesn’t need to be all-singing-all-dancing), then the following will get you on the recording road:
Audio Interface
Microphone
Speakers
Headphones
MIDI keyboard
Plus the cables - don’t forget the cables!
I’ve put together a shopping list of these things, that come in at under £400. That’s probably the same as a total that the computer cost to buy...
Here is a simplified view of a setup, using only bits of paper and an explanation of each piece and how it functions within the setup.

Great info. Your diagram is perfect and super easy to follow. This is a great antidote to those who may be dazzled by images of home music studios which look like Michael Jackson's control room. I have an iPad, MIDI controller keyboard, audio interface and a PC, so very much like the setup you describe, and I'm still just scratching the surface of what is possible. Plus: A tip to the wise based on my experience. I spent a fair amount of money on the keyboard, and it has a bunch of knobs and pads, but those are mainly for controlling the DAW, and I really haven't ended up using them at all. The keyboard you suggest would be absolutely sufficient for my needs, especially when using the iPad.

Is there a good reason for not connecting the monitors to the Computer speaker outputs?

The audio quality from the standard computer card won’t be even half as good as the audio interface, and it will also be at a lower level. In addition, it becomes a bit of a hassle to assign the input to one device and the output to another. This may also increase latency..

Hi Dan! Do you know where I can buy a powered Thunderbolt / USB 4 hub please? My Samsung T7 won't show up on my 2021 iPad Pro at all. Thanks.

It may be that the T7 needs formatting first to the correct format in order that the iPad will see it. It’s not an area of expertise for me I’m afraid....
