I think I once operated a Kubota excavator with a similar engine. This little fella is so utilitarian and practical that it loops all the way back around to being cute and quirky. The side weights are quite clever, a more dignified way to step into the cab of a little narrow gauge diesel loco.

Hello @@lmm
I’ve seen that engine unit in a Kubota mini tractor and was pleasantly surprised by the dependable power it brought for it’s size. Nice little locomotive!

Being from the garden and grounds machinery industry that Kubota engine is used for a lot of machinery from compact tractors, diggers, mowers, wood chippers, generators and even side by side ATV vehicles. The only other diesel engine out there that gets fitted to other machinery is from the other Japanese manufacturer Yanmar.

It's a super little thing
At idle sounds very much like the marinized Kubota 3 cylinder engine. Very simple and practical engines. Mine is a decade or two newer. Nice shunter. I'm glad you gave it a chance to stretch its legs. Small diesels need that from time to time.

Came home from a long day at school, had trouble with internet and had to spend an hour calling customer service and nearly broke my neck when i tripped over my cat Bob. But then i saw this video and everything is gonna be allright. Bob is also allright btw.

I adore these little utilitarian units that tend to go unappreciated. It would be interesting to see something like little "Titch" scaled up to this size.

What a wonderful little outfit. Hydrostatic drive would be a huge benefit - smooth and very controlled power output. I used to work on John Deere farm equipment. The hydrostatic stuff was so nice to operate.

Brilliant video! Interesting history. I didn't expect, that the loco isn't 30 Years old!
Truly one of the locomotives of statford barn railway. All said, i like it more than some of there other locos. Say what you want but this unironically is the best piece they have.

There's a really interesting place worth a visit near Chesterfield called Barrow Hill, I believe it's the only surviving operational full scale roundhouse, they also have the Deltoc Preservation Society with their project "The baby deltic" on display within the roundhouse

Awesome stuff Lawrie, another place local to me, like when you went to Apedale, however I haven't yet been to Statfold. Closest heritage railway is Chasewater 😁
The first colour scheme it was in was extremely faded British Rail blue and yellow. Looks much better in the green though.

I've been on "Rio-Gen", the sibling to that one at woodhorn narrow gauge railway. on woodhorn's track (which isn't good in the best of places) you can feel every bump in the track and it is very uncomfortable.

Until I began to watch some of your videos, I didn't realise that European trains didn't use knuckle couplers like over here in North America. Watching your intro reminded me of that. I suppose that is because North American railways had them mandated, and European railways won't because it's too expensive. I could be mistaken, as I don't have all the pertinent information handy.
@mattsmocs3281
Жыл бұрын
Slowly there is knuckles being phased in the UK, mainland Europe leas parts of eastern Europe have multiple coupler types along with hook and buffer making it quite confusing. But atleast in britian, all modern freight locos and stock have knuckles. They only have buffers so the ancient desels like the 08 can still swich them using what are basically link pin couplers ( so its closer to early 1900’s America than anything else.)
@P-B-G_YT

@@mattsmocs3281 Thank you for the update and clarification.
@lmm

Apart from he's incorrect. Modern freight locos still work on hook and screwlink. Knuckles have been used on passenger stock for a long time in the UK. The BR mark 1s have it Modern DMU's and EMUS generally have thier own specific coupling system, so there's a real mess of different systems.

@@lmm of course. I don't mean to imply otherwise. But somehow you often wind up driving something there (and in other similar places) that's the sort of loco you look at like a dog with his/her owner where the canine clearly has the intellectual upper hand. I think you do not understand the nature of this little thing. The Statfold folks arranged for you a blind date with a Lady. She requires a genteel touch, or you will get slapped. Yes, she not the steam belching or diesel smoke farting brute you are usually teamed with. She is minimally dress for the weather. Of course, if it turns foul, she will just soldier on. Her operator is expected to do likewise. Pointing out a lady has gained weight, and is a bit broader in the beam than she once was, is a little impolite. You spend a sunny British(!) afternoon snugged up with a Lady, dressed for the tropics, and you object.? Remember, She was on time. There was none of the usual crawling about with an oil can and rags. She is as understated as your graphic for these adventures. Anyone who follow this series realizes its True Name as pagans would say, is " Lawrie Goes ( A Bit More) Loco. " God bless you..
